DOI: 10.2478/ajm-2020-0012 Studies Alban Berg – Sieben frühe Lieder. Performance perspectives IONELA BUTU, Associate Professor PhD “George Enescu” National University of Arts ROMANIA∗ Bergʼs worldwide reputation had been consolidated with orchestral and chamber works and the opera Wozzeck. (...) For different reasons, his dimension as a composer of songs does not seem to be very large, and yet it is fundamental to his personality nevertheless. Mark DeVoto Abstract: The study presents several interpretative suggestions made from the perspective of the accompanying pianist that played Alban Bergʼs Sieben frühe Lieder. Why this topic? Because in the Romanian music literature, there is nothing written about the song cycle Sieben frühe Lieder by Alban Berg, which is a representative work in the history of the art song. The theme, addressed in the literature written abroad, is treated mostly from a musicological standpoint. That is why we considered it useful to make some observations of an interpretative nature. They will become relevant if read in parallel with the PhD thesis entitled Alban Bergʼs “Sieben frühe Lieder”: An Analysis of Musical Structures and Selected Performances, written by Lisa A. Lynch (the only documentary source that proposes in-depth syntactic analyses of the work, associated with valuable interpretative suggestions made from a vocal perspective). We also considered useful, during the study, the comparison between the two variants of the work: the chamber/voice-piano version and the orchestral version. The analysis of the symphonic text was carried out intending the observation of significant details useful for realizing an expressive duo performance. Of course, our interpretative suggestions are a variant between many others.

Meter is the hierarchical framework against which the listener relates melodic complexes on the musical surface, and this metric foundation is key to the listener’s understanding of the musical fabric as a whole. While many theorists have discussed the relationship between musical surface and metric structure in Classical- and Romantic-era music, the rhythmic and structural underpinning of twentieth- century repertoires has received far less attention. In the tonal music of the Common Practice period, meter was relatively stable, but metric structure became increasingly complex in the twentieth century, with repertoires that avoid regularity across musical parameters.

  • What Size Viola?
From Violins and Violinists December 1943 What Size Viola? VIOLA EXPERIMENTA By Robert Dolejsi When the Violin finally reached her destiny in the ideal instrument that knows no peer today, and was recognized as the stringed mistress of the soprano family, it fell to the unfortunate lot of that hapless maiden Viola to become the subject of avid experimentation. In their search for an instrument of identical design and superb characteristics, makers, luthiers, artisans and, (indirectly through suggestion) composers and players, conducted intense experiments to find a medium of deeper register that would represent the alto and tenor voice and thus complete the quartet of strings. There is ample ground in all instrumental bibliography to support the theory that experimentation was one of the chief causes for the numerous sizes in fiddles that marked instrument making in the viola category from the 17th century onward. That generic English term Viol designated the instrument that succeeded the medieval fiddle. In literature at least, though not in actual invention, it preceded the violin family; for it must be emphasized that contrary to general conception, the viol was more the precursor and not the predecessor or direct ancestor of the violin. This distinction in progenitorship belongs to that branch of the instrumental tree represented by the rebec and Iyra—and all three branches were growing and developing simultaneously side by side. The experimental premise had already been laid in the highly variegated family of viols. Oddly enough, and paradoxically too, it appears that the viola or tenor ( the names were interchangeable during a period when great confusion in sizes and types existed ), was the first of the viol family to adopt changes in tuning and string number.
