A SATELLITE BASED RAPID ASSESSMENT ON FLOODS IN JAMMU & KASHMIR – SEPTEMBER, 2014 In Collaboration with National Remote Sensing Centre Dept. of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing Indian Space Research Organization, Government of Jammu and Kashmir Hyderabad-37. Bemina, Srinagar-10 A SATELLITE BASED RAPID ASSESSMENT ON FLOODS IN JAMMU & KASHMIR – SEPTEMBER, 2014 Principal Coordinator Suresh Chugh, IFS Principal Investigator Majid Farooq © Copyright No part of this publication/report may be reproduced without the prior permission of the publisher, i.e., Dept. of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing Government of Jammu and Kashmir Bemina, Srinagar-10 & National Remote Sensing Centre Indian Space Research Organization, Hyderabad-37. Executive Summary Jammu & Kashmir experienced one of the worst floods in the past 60 years, during first week of September 2014, due to unprecedented and intense rains. The Jhelum River and its tributaries were in spate and caused extensive flooding in the region. The Decision Support Centre (DSC) of NRSC in collaboration with Department of Environment & Remote Sensing, J&K took necessary action on satellite data acquisition and processing and kept a close watch on the flood situation. All possible data from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites, as well as foreign satellites, covering Kashmir valley were obtained and analyzed. Rapid flood mapping and monitoring was done on almost daily basis and the flood inundation information was prepared. In addition, cumulative flood inundation, flood progression and recession maps were also prepared. Flood inundation simulation study was done using CARTO-DEM for Jhelum River to identify the possible flood affected areas and the same was uploaded on Bhuvan portal. -
A Study on Vehicular Movement Analysis of Some Specified Areas in the City of Srinagar
International Journal of Engineering Trends and Applications (IJETA) – Volume 4 Issue 6, Nov-Dec 2017 RESEARCH ARTICLE OPEN ACCESS A Study on Vehicular Movement Analysis of Some Specified Areas in the City Of Srinagar Irfan Yousuf [1], Mumtaz Mohammad Jahangir [2], Amanullah khan [3], Pakeeza Jhan[4] Department of Civil Engineering Lovely Professional University, Phagwara Punjab - India ABSTRACT As the Srinagar city is one of a beautiful city in the country with the growth of population the demand of transportation system has been in the greater amount. The prime element of a transportation system is to provide better traffic facility which should not involve congestion, accidents, vague traffic lights and unmannered parking on roads. Presently the Srinagar city faces all these challenges especially in some areas like Lal Chowk, Batamaloo, Pantha Chowk have huge rush of traffic throughout the day because of the reason the Lal chowk is not only commercial hub of city but the famous schools, colleges, government and private offices are located in this area, batamaloo has the largest bus stand in the city which connects the Srinagar to other rural areas of the Kashmir valley and Pantha Chowk connects the Srinagar with national highway-1 by which it connects with rest of India.so there are some factors to deal with transportation problem as follows regulation, planning, designing, enforcement and accident analysis. Through this paper, we will show the present scenario of roads, footpaths and traffic lights in these areas are not up to mark need to be emphasis by showing the statics of vehicle growth and forecasting for future and accident rate to locate the black spots which do not only help in planning but to improve traffic. -
Linguistic Repertoire and Sociolinguistic Contexts for Acquisition of Burushaski and Other Languages by Burushos of Kashmir
International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN (Online): 2319-7064 Index Copernicus Value (2013): 6.14 | Impact Factor (2014): 5.611 Linguistic Repertoire and Sociolinguistic Contexts for Acquisition of Burushaski and Other Languages by Burushos of Kashmir Sabba Mushtaq University of Kashmir, Dept of Linguistics, Hazratbal, Srinagar, Kashmir, India Abstract: Burushaski, Pashto, Dardi and Gojri are regarded as minority languages as their speakers are demographically lower in number in Jammu and Kashmir and the natives of these languages use Kashmiri or Urdu in formal domains. Burushaski, also known by the names of Boorishki, Brugaski, Kanjut, Werchikwar and Mishaski is a language isolate spoken by some 87,000 Burusho people in Hunza, Nagar and Yasin area of Northern Pakistan. Linguistically, Burushaski has been termed as a language isolate because it does not characterize the genetic relationship with the surrounding language families like Indic, Sino-Tibetan, Dardic etc. Ethnologue (2005) mentions Burushaski speakers in India but does not provide about the specific information about the number of speakers and their exact location. According to the members of this speech community 300-350 Burushos live in Srinagar. Burushaski speakers of Jammu and Kashmir are settled in and around a small locality by the foothills of Hariparbat in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The locality is known as Mohalla Azur Khan, named after Raja Azur Khan. Jammu and Kashmir Burushos are also reported to live in Tral (Pulwama), Batamaloo, and Dandusa in Bemina area of Srinagar. The present paper aims to study the sociolinguistic context for acquisition of Burushaski and other languages known to Burushos of Kashmir. -
