New approaches to storing, searching and displaying point cloud data as well as algorithms for calibrating mobile laser scanners and registering laser scans are presented and discussed. Novel methods are tested on state of the art mobile laser scanning systems and are examined in detail. Irma3D, an autonomous mobile laser scanning platform has been developed for the purpose of experimentation. This work is the result of several years of research in robotics and laser scanning. It is the accumulation of many journal articles and conference papers that have been reviewed by peers in the field of computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence and surveying. Danksagung The work that goes into finishing a work like this is long and arduous, yet it can at times be pleasing, exciting and even fun. 1 Oriental Metrology and the Politics of Antiquity in Nineteenth-century Survey Sciences Simon Schaffer University of Cambridge E-mail: [email protected] Argument Metrological techniques to establish shared quantitative measures have often been seen as signs of rational modernisation. The cases considered here show instead the close relation of such techniques with antiquarian and revivalist programmes under imperial regimes. Enterprises in survey sciences in Egypt in the wake of the French invasion of 1798 and in India during the East India Company’s revenue surveys involved the promotion of a new kind of oriental metrology designed to represent colonisers’ measures as restorations of ancient values to be applied to current systems of survey and measurement. Surveyors’ practice and hardware help clarify the significance of the complex historical and political functions of scientific standards. The balance of the paper discusses the survey work of later nineteenth century indigenous Egyptian astronomers at a conjuncture of major economic and political dislocation to explore the various versions of antiquity at stake in these metrological programmes. 2 Introduction: survey sciences and metrology’s invention “Egyptian genius always seems to take pleasure in veiling from the world the principle of its lovely creations, concealing it from profane eyes, perhaps so as better to give them a divine origin, keep them pure and guard them from time’s injuries. Thus one sees in use in Egypt, but without being able to understand the principle, a measurement system apparently crude but in fact the most exact of all known systems”: Mahmud al-Falaki, “The current Egyptian measurement system” (Mahmud 1873, 67) Metrological equipment relies on material measures that somehow embody agreed standards used by a specific community to help make its world knowable in quantitative form. -

Hunt 9 The Partnership of Smithson Tennant and William Hyde Wollaston “A quantity of platina was purchased by me a few years since with the design of rendering it malleable for the different purposes to which it is adapted. That object has now been attained. ” WILLIAM HYDE W O L L A S T O N Up to the end of the eighteenth century the attempts to produce malleable platinum had advanced mainly in the hands of practical men aiming at its pre paration and fabrication rather than at the solution of scientific problems. These were now to be attacked with a marked degree of success by two remarkable but very different men who first became friends during their student days at Cam bridge and who formed a working partnership in 1800 designed not only for scientific purposes but also for financial reasons. They were of the same genera tion and much the same background as the professional scientists of London whose work was described in Chapter 8, and to whom they were well known, but with the exception of Humphry Davy they were of greater stature and made a greater advance in the development of platinum metallurgy than their predecessors. Their combined achievements over a relatively short span of years included the successful production for the first time of malleable platinum on a truly com mercial scale as well as the discovery of no less than four new elements contained in native platinum, a factor that was of material help in the purification and treatment of platinum itself. -

HADLEY’S OCTANT (A. D. 1731). On the occasion of the second centenary of the invention of reflecting instruments and in accordance with the usual custom of reproducing in the Hydrographic Review documents of particular interest connected with the history of nautical and hydrographic science, the communication made by John Hadley to the Royal Society of London on 13th May, 1731, is repro duced hereafter in facsimile. This communication was published in N° 420 of the Philosophical Transactions. It appears that the oldest document in which allusion is made to the principle of reflection by plane mirrors, as applied to the measurement of angles, is the History of the Royal Society of London by B ir c h . In this book, under the date of 22nd August, 1666, it is stated “ Mr. H o o k mentionned a new astronomical instrument for making observations of distances by reflection”. In another place it may be read that on the 29th August of the same year, H o o k spoke of this instrument again, it being then under construction, to the members of the Society. They invited him to submit it as soon as possible and this was done on 12th September of that year. The instrument submitted by H o o k differed in important details from the modern sextant; it was provided with but one mirror and thus was a single reflecting instrument. This was the fundamental defect which made it impos sible for H o o k ’s invention to be a success. However, the idea of using reflection from a plane mirror for the measu rement of angles was not forgotten and, in spite of H o o k ’s want of success the principle was taken up by others who sought to correct the disadvantages of the instrument as first invented. -

Ships that went off course had no way to re-discover their longitude. With no known location, they might smash into underwater obstacles or be forever lost at sea. The award-winning exhibition, Ships, Clocks & Stars: The Quest for Longitude, produced by the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London, celebrates the 300th anniversary of the British Longitude Act of 1714, which offered huge rewards for any practical way to determine longitude at sea. The longitude problem was so difficult that—despite that incentive—it took five decades to solve it. Through extraordinary, historic materials—many from the collection of the National Maritime Museum—the exhibition tells the story of the clockmakers, astronomers, naval officers, and others who pursued the long "quest for longitude" to ultimate success. John Harrison’s work in developing extremely advanced marine timekeepers, which was vital to finally solving the problem of longitude, took place against a backdrop of almost unprecedented collaboration and investment. Featured in this complex and fascinating history are the names of Galileo, Isaac Newton, Captain James Cook, and William Bligh of HMS Bounty.
