    On Thursday 3rd we have arranged an excursion in the afternoon to Greenwich Tickets are provided for entry to the Royal Greenwich Observatory (home of the Greenwich meridian) and the Cutty Sark ship (the last tea clipper to survive). The National Maritime Museum and Painted Hall (part of the Old Royal Naval College), the Royal park surrounding the Observatory are free to enter. There are several pubs located by the river where you can refresh yourself before returning to Queen Mary for the conference dinner which starts at 7pm: The Trafalgar Tavern The Cutty Sark The Greenwich Union Painted hall will close at 4pm, other attractions close at 5pm, last entry at 4.30pm A packed lunch will be provided and can be picked up after the morning plenary session. Delegates will be able to leave their bags in a secure room in the physics building after the plenary session, to be picked up before the dinner. http://www.rmg.co.uk https://www.ornc.org/paintedhall 3 ways to get to Greenwich 1) Take the east bound central line from Mile End station one stop to Stratford. Then change to platform 4A or 4B to take the DLR (Dockland Light Railway) to Canary Wharf. (Do NOT take DLR from platforms 16 or 17!). To continue to Greenwich from Canary Wharf take the south bound DLR from platform 1 or 2 in the direction of Lewisham and get off at the Cutty Sark station. 2) Walk south down Regents Canal towards the river Thames, when you reach Limehouse basin turn right to Limehouse station and take the DLR in the direction of Lewisham (via Canary Wharf) and get off at the Cutty Sark station.

    Help us secure the future of the Hilton Trafalgar Flags NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM | ROYAL OBSERVATORY GREENW ICH | THE QUEEN’S HOUSE | CUTTY SARK The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October, 1805 , Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1822-24, BHC0565 National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, Greenwich Hospital Collection HMS Victory (centre) still flying the flags of Nelson’s famous signal, ‘England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty’. To the left of Victory’s main mast is the Union flag, which has been loosened by the French ship Redoutable which was dismasted. The Hilton Trafalgar Flags of St. Mary’s Church, Selling The National Maritime Museum has the rare and exciting opportunity to acquire two surviving flags from the Battle of Trafalgar, October 1805. The first is a Union Flag, from HMS Minotaur and was, we know, flown at the battle. The second is an Austrian ensign and is as interesting as the Union Flag. It is believed to have come from the Neptuno , the Spanish warship jointly captured at Trafalgar by Minotaur and Spartiate . Following the high profile sale of the Union Flag from HMS Spartiate in 2009, St. Mary’s Church, Selling in Kent approached the National Maritime Museum with an offer for the museum to purchase the two flags for £175,000. The Union Flag has been valued at £150,000 and the Austrian Ensign at £25,000. The National Maritime Museum is the preferred choice for the church - recognising the museum’s unique ability to care for such rare objects, to display them appropriately and to tell their amazing stories to our visitors.

    SOME BOARD OF LONGITUDE INSTRUMENTS IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY A.N. STIMSON National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London A series of calamitous British disasters at sea occurred at the turn of the 17th century, many of which can be attributed to poor navigation compounded by inability to find longitude. Perhaps the most momentous was that of Sir Cloudsley Shovel's returning Mediterranean Squadron which was comprehensively wrecked on the Scilly Islands in 1707 with the loss of four large warships and nearly 2000 men.1 An increasing public outcry at this regular loss of life and keenly felt loss of trade revenue resulted in an Act of Parliament which was intended to improve the inadequate state of navigation by stimulating an answer to the seemingly impossible problem of finding longitude at sea. On 20th July, 1714 Queen Anne gave her assent to "A Bill for Providing a Public Reward for such Person or Persons as shall Discover the Longitude at Sea". £ 20,000, an enormous sum of money at that time, was to be awarded to anyone who could provide a practical solution of general utility which would enable a navigator to find his ship's position to within twenty geographical miles. Lesser sums were to be awarded for methods which produced less accurate results.2 To oversee the management of these awards and to judge the prac- ticability of the solutions proposed, the Act provided for a Board of Commissioners. This was composed of the best scientific and seafaring minds of the day in addition to the inevitable political appointments.
