Preserving and protecting the character of Columbia Falls is vital to the continued stability of the local economy and to the happiness and wellbeing of the townspeople. Consistent with the provisions of the Growth Management Legislation, Columbia Falls’ Comprehensive Plan has attempted to recognize the value of land use standards, to incorporate the desires of the community, and to preserve and protect the integrity of Columbia Falls. All of this is done so as to continue to make Columbia Falls a great place to live, work and vacation. The Town of Columbia Falls adopted its last Comprehensive Plan in 2002. -

The works of many of those fine illustrators grace these pages. iv Early Stages of Fishes in the Western North Atlantic Ocean v Preface The contents of this monograph are a revision and update of an earlier atlas describing the eggs and larvae of western Atlantic marine fishes occurring between the Scotian Shelf and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (Fahay, 1983). The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. Molecular Systematics of Gadid Fishes: Implications for the Biogeographic Origins of Pacific Species

Kivlichan, Pierre Pepin, and Dorothy C. Crutcher Abstract: Phylogenetic relationships among 14 species of gadid fishes were investigated with portions of two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes, a 401 base pair (bp) segment of the cytochrome b gene, and a 495 bp segment of the cytochrome oxidase I gene. The molecular data indicate that the three species of gadids endemic to the Pacific Basin represent simultaneous invasions by separate phylogenetic lineages. The Alaskan or walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) is about as closely related to the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) as is the Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), which suggests that T. chalcogramma and G. macrocephalus represent separate invasions of the Pacific Basin. The Pacific tomcod (Microgadus proximus) is more closely related to the Barents Sea navaga (Eleginus navaga) than to the congeneric Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod), which suggests that the Pacific species is derived from the Eleginus lineage and that Eleginus should be synonymized with Microgadus. Molecular divergences between each of the three endemic Pacific species and their respective closest relatives are similar and consistent with contemporaneous speciation events following the reopening of the Bering Strait ca. 3.0–3.5 million years BP. In contrast, the Greenland cod (Gadus ogac) and the Pacific cod have essentially identical mtDNA sequences; differences between them are less than those found within G. morhua. The Greenland cod appears to represent a contemporary northward and eastward range extension of the Pacific cod, and should be synonymized with it as G. -

(CBHI) for the proposed East Bay Hills Wind Power Project. This MEKS mandate is to consider land and water areas which the proposed project will utilize, and to identify what Mi’kmaq traditional use activities have occurred, or are currently occurring within, and what Mi’kmaq ecological knowledge presently exists in regards to the area. In order to ensure accountability and ethic responsibility of this MEKS, the MEKS development has adhered to the “Mi’kmaq Ecological Knowledge Protocol”. This protocol is a document that has been established by the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs, which speaks to the process, procedures and results that are expected of a MEKS. The Mi’kmaq Ecological Knowledge Study consisted of two major components: • Mi’kmaq Traditional Land and Resource Use Activities , both past and present, • A Mi’kmaq Significance Species Analysis , considering the resources that are important to Mi’kmaq use. The Mi’kmaq Traditional Land and Resource Use Activities component utilized interviews as the key source of information regarding Mi’kmaq use in the Project Site and Study Area. -

Introduction and Recent History Natural tidal flow to the salt marshes on the West Branch of the Pleasant River was shut off in 1940 by the installation of a “clapper dam” at its mouth. Deprived of tidal flow the former salt marsh ceased to perform its role at the head of the food chain in the Pleasant River estuary and became overgrown with fresh water species of vegetation. Since their construction the tide gates have failed several times and required frequent and expensive repairs. In 1998 the Maine DOT carried out a major renovation. During the same period of time land owners along the Branch asked the Town of Addison to con- sider removing the tide gates and restoring the historic salt marshes. -

Members are welcome to join us to learn about the work we’ve done in the past year and learn how you can be a voice for nature in New Brunswick. Saturday and Sunday are for discovering St. Andrews and Charlotte County. Choose from a wide variety of trips and outings that showcase all that the region has to offer. Be guided by knowledgeable naturalists, experts, and enthusiastic local community members, and share an experience with old and new friends. All participants are welcome to celebrate the year’s successes with us at our Saturday evening celebration banquet. This is a casual, social event with good food, fun entertainment, and great company. You can also expect a cash bar, a prize raffle, and a silent auction for some amazing nature experiences. DeVries Professor Gary J. Olsen Associate Professor Kurt E. Kwast ABSTRACT Gadids (cod fishes) are ecologically prominent and important species of the north polar marine fauna. Seven gadid species are known to have evolved antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) that enable their survival from inoculative freezing by environmental ice in frigid Arctic and sub- Arctic waters. AFGPs protect the fish from freezing death by binding to ice crystals and arresting ice growth within the fish. How and from where this important new genetic trait evolved in the gadid genome remained unknown, as thus far there are no homologous sequences in databases to infer genetic ancestry based on sequence homology. Additionally, the seven AFGP-bearing species are dispersed in separate clades of the gadid phylogeny, indicating a complicated evolutionary history of AFGP in the gadid lineage. The AFGP loci in three gadid species were isolated and characterized to investigate the genetic origin and evolutionary pathway of the AFGP gene family in the gadid lineage. Two of these species are polar cod Boreogadus saida and Atlantic tomcod Microgadus tomcod, which occur in distinct clades representing two possible separate origins of the gadid AFGP. -
Support for Delineation of Inner Bay of Fundy Salmon Marine Critical Habitat Boundaries in Minas Basin and Chignecto
Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat Maritimes Region Science Response 2015/035 SUPPORT FOR DELINEATION OF INNER BAY OF FUNDY SALMON MARINE CRITICAL HABITAT BOUNDARIES IN MINAS BASIN AND CHIGNECTO BAY Context In April 2014, the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Species at Risk Management Division (SARMD) in the Maritimes Region requested information from DFO Science to assist with the delineation of boundaries for critical habitat (CH) being considered for Inner Bay of Fundy (IBOF) Atlantic Salmon within Chignecto Bay and Minas Basin, specifically: to assist with the delineation of the boundary between estuarine and marine habitat for several large, tidal estuaries (i.e., Petitcodiac River, Avon River, Salmon River Colchester, Shubenacadie River estuary and Cumberland Basin). DFO Science had previously provided advice on the characteristics and general location of important marine and estuarine habitat for IBOF salmon (DFO 2008; DFO 2013); however, additional information was requested to assist in delineating the precise boundaries of important marine habitat within Chignecto Bay and Minas Basin in order to subsequently propose, describe and map these as CH within an amended Recovery Strategy for IBOF salmon. Once identified in the Recovery Strategy, measures will be taken to protect this marine CH under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). This Science Response Report results from the Science Response Process of 11 July 2014 on Support for Delineation of Inner Bay of Fundy Salmon Marine Critical Habitat Boundaries. Background The inner Bay of Fundy populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are listed as Endangered under the Species at Risk Act, and SARA requires the identification of CH for endangered species within a Recovery Strategy (or Action Plan).
