The officer, as a Scholar Warrior, is a distinguished member of the country’s strategic community, and is a prolific writer on military subjects. He has authored 5 Books, two on Air Defence, two on United Nations and one on Combat Leadership. The General is regularly published in a host of Professional Magazines and Journals, month-on-month. He has to his credit, some 85 Articles on a wide spectrum of subjects and counting. Besides the kernel of Air Defence as his core competency, the General has developed alternative writing verticals on Space subjects, the Unmanned and a special expertise in the Defence Procurement Procedures. Off late the General has also started appearing on TV shows carrying programmes related to his domain of expertise. Gen Saxena, holds a Doctorate with his thesis on the ‘Future of the United Nations in the 21st Century’. Besides this, he is a NLSIU scholar with qualifications in Human Rights and Child Rights Law. This report is the culmination of a two and one-half month review of preparations in Russia for the Phase 1A missions (Soyuz TM-21, Mir 18 Main Expedition, and STS-71). Once again the Task Force received tremendous support from many individuals and organizations at NASA. The same applied to our site visits in Russia where we were met with an openness and candor which served to reinforce our confidence in the ultimate success of the upcoming missions. Over the next two months, the Task Force will be focusing its efforts in two areas. The first are the preparations for STS-71, including the status of the Orbiter Docking System and the analysis of data produced by the STS-63 mission. The second area is the NASA and NASA contractor presence in Russia, including the interaction of Phase 1 and Phase 2 personnel, NASA and contractor functions, and the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2. He is the policy chair for this project, the deputy director for the policy of businesses for HUFPI, the co-president of the Harvard Undergraduate Clean Energy Group, and is part of the club swim team. He has experience in national security strategy, private equity, clean energy, electro-mechanical design, and ventures. Qijia Zhou ([email protected]) is an undergraduate at Harvard College with an intended concentration in Physics and Astrophysics with a secondary in Government. She intends to pursue a career at the intersection of science and policy. She is the Vice President of the Harvard Undergraduate Ethics Bowl and a staff writer at the Harvard International Review. She is also a member of the Harvard Swimming Club and the Harvard Band. She has experience in mechanics, public speaking, science communication, and continues to pursue her interest in astrophysics research. Her focus in this paper was on US x India. Ryan Santos ([email protected]) is an undergraduate at Harvard College concentrating in History with a secondary in Economics. He has done research at Stanford University’s Empirical Studies of Conflict Program and has worked for the Fragile and Conflict-Affected Situations unit at the Asian Development Bank. -

Antisatellite Systems the Nation's First Operational Antisatellite Weapon System Was Known As Program 505
This group photo, taken in 1968, shows 14 of the 17 MOL astronauts. The first group of eight astronauts was selected in November 1965, the second group of five in June 1966, and the third group of four in June 1967. Following cancellation of the MOL program, seven of the former MOL astronauts became astronauts for NASA, and three later attained general officer or admiral rank. James Abrahamson (top right) became a lieutenant general and Director of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization. Robert Herres (top left) became a four-star general and Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Space Command. Richard Truly (bottom right) became a vice admiral and head of the U.S. Naval Space Command. After retiring from the Navy, Admiral Truly joined NASA, serving first as Associate Administrator for Space Flight and later as Administrator. Antisatellite Systems The nation's first operational antisatellite weapon system was known as Program 505. It was developed by the U.S. Army, using Nike Zeus missiles originally designed for an anti-ballistic-missile role. The Army based the missiles on Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific, conducted tests, and declared the system operational on 1 August 1963. Secretary of Defense McNamara at first kept the system on alert but abandoned it in favor of the Air Force’s antisatellite system in 1964. The Air Force’s antisatellite system was brought into being by Space Systems Division during late 1963 and early 1964. A ground-based system known as Program 437, it employed Thor missiles with nuclear warheads which could be shot into space accurately enough to destroy or disable a hostile space-based weapon or satellite. -

In the course of an assessment of Civilian Space Stations, the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) has undertaken a study of the presence of Soviets in space and their Salyut space stations, in order to provide Congress with an informed view of Soviet capabilities and intentions. The major element in this technical memorandum was a workshop held at OTA in December 1982: it was the first occasion when a significant number of experts in this area of Soviet space activities had met for extended unclassified discussion. As a result of the workshop, OTA prepared this technical memorandum, “Salyut: Soviet Steps Toward Permanent Human Presence in Space. ” It has been reviewed extensively by workshop participants and others familiar with Soviet space activities. Also in December 1982, OTA wrote to the U. S. S. R.’s Ambassador to the United States Anatoliy Dobrynin, requesting any information concerning present and future Soviet space activities that the Soviet Union judged could be of value to the OTA assess- ment of civilian space stations. -
