Israel Regardie and the Psychologization of Esoteric Discourse
Correspondences 3 (2015) 5–54 ISSN: 2053-7158 (Online) correspondencesjournal.com Israel Regardie and the Psychologization of Esoteric Discourse Christopher A. Plaisance E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This is an article in the history of Western esoteric currents that re-examines and clarifies the relationship between esoteric and psychological discourses within the works of Israel Regardie. One of the most common ways in which these two discourses have been found to be related to one another by scholars of the esoteric is through the process of “psychologization”— with Regardie often being put forth as a paragon of the process. This paper argues that a unitary conception of psychologization fails to adequately describe the specific discursive strategies utilized by Regardie. In order to accurately analyze his ideas, a manifold typology of complementary, terminological, reductive, and idealist modes of psychologization is proposed instead. Through this system of classification, Regardie’s ideas regarding the relationship between psychological and esoteric discourses are understood as a network of independent but non-exclusive processes, rather than as a single trend. It is found that all four modes of psychologization are present, both in relative isolation and in combination with one another, throughout his works. These results demonstrate that while it is accurate to speak of Regardie as having psychologized esoteric discourse, this can only be the case given an understanding of “psychologization” that is differentially nuanced in a way that, at least, accounts for the distinct discursive strategies this paper identifies. RECENT BIOGRAPHIES of ALEISTER CROWLEY On
THE NEVERENDINGLY TOLD STORY: RECENT BIOGRAPHIES OF ALEISTER CROWLEY MARCO PASI Martin Booth, A Magick Life: The Biography of Aleister Crowley . London: Hodder & Stoughton, 2000. xv + 507 pp., 38 illustrations (ISBN 0-340-71805-6). Lawrence Sutin, Do What Thou Wilt: A Life of Aleister Crowley . New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2000. viii + 483 pp., 8 illustrations (ISBN 0-312-25243-9). Richard Kaczynski, Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley . Tempe: New Falcon Publications, 2002. 555 pp. (ISBN 1-561-84170-6). On April 27, 1900, the poet and occultist W.B. Yeats wrote a letter to his friend Lady Gregory. He was worried about the feud which was then opposing the London members of the Second Order of the Golden Dawn (of whom he was one), and the head of the Order, S. L. MacGregor Mathers. The conflict, which was reaching its climax, would soon lead the Order to a schism, the first and most disruptive of a long series. In his letter, Yeats refers to Aleister Crowley, who was then siding with Mathers against the London members, as ‘a person of unspeakable life’1. When Yeats wrote his letter, Crowley was a young man of 25, and had as yet no public reputation of his own, either good or bad. The exact reason why Yeats (and probably other Second Order members) deemed his life to be so “unspeakable” has never been ascertained, although it had obviously something to do with a perceived immoral behaviour on Crowley’s part. The story might have ended there, with this obscure young man disap- pearing from history again, after having gained, as his only claim to fame, the dubious honour of a dismissive, contemptuous remark from a future Nobel Prize-winning poet. -

The Slaves Shall Serve: Meditations on Liberty, James Wasserman, Sekmet Books, 2004, 0971887012, 9780971887015, 224 pages. A battle is raging for the soul of America, and it is of critical interest to the survival of freedom worldwide. Our nation is surrendering its fundamental values of individual responsibility and self determination.Domestically we exchange our privacy and autonomy for the chimera of security; internationally we abdicate our ability to act in our national interest. Why are we squandering the precious jewels of the greatest political experiment in human history? What actions can thoughtful citizens take to protect and regain their personal freedoms? This important collection of essays is supplemented by lengthy appendices containing the primary reference materials that underlie the author's bold assertions.Readers will fearlessly explore the modern plague of collectivism, especially as embodied by the United Nations; learn the true political, historical, and spiritual roots of the September 11th attacks; revisit the Waco massacre without averting their glance; witness the cynical manipulations of the civilian disarmament movement; and be invited to contemplate the role of transcendent values in the battle to preserve and maintain freedom.. YI JING of Fu Xi, King Wen and the Duke of Zhou
THE YI JING Of Fu Xi, King Wen and the Duke of Zhou Commented by Aleister Crowley Paraphrased From the James Legge translation As found in the “Chinese Equinox” with additional notes by Marcelo Motta Edited and appended with Crowley‟s Tarot attributions and added notes from the Book of Thoth, 777 and other sources including the writings of C.F. Russell by Paul Joseph Rovelli Also including two lessons on the Yi Jing drawn from lecture notes prepared by The Master Therion A.‟.A.‟. Publication in Class B Imprimatur N. Frater A.‟.A.‟. All comments in Class C EDITORIAL NOTE By Marcelo Motta Our acquaintance with the Yi Jing dates from first finding it mentioned in Book Four Part III, the section on Divination, where A.C. expresses a clear preference for it over other systems as being more flexible, therefore more complete. We bought the Richard Wilhelm translation, with its shallow Jung introduction, but never liked it much. Eventually, on a visit to Mr. Germer, he showed us his James Legge edition, to which he had lovingly attached typewritten reproductions of A.C.‟s commentaries to the Hexagrams. We requested his permission to copy the commentaries. Presently we obtained the Legge edition and found that, although not as flamboyant as Wilhelm‟s, it somehow spoke more clearly to us. We carefully glued A.C.‟s notes to it, in faithful copy of our Instructor‟s device. To this day we have the book, whence we have transcribed the notes for the benefit of our readers. Mr. Germer always cast the Yi before making what he considered an important decision. -
March of the Pigs Augustus Sol Invictus, P:.I:.º, Excommvnicatvs Thornton Park, Florida I Ianvarivs Mmxv Ivppiter
MARCH OF THE PIGS AUGUSTUS SOL INVICTUS, P:.I:.º, EXCOMMVNICATVS THORNTON PARK, FLORIDA I IANVARIVS MMXV IVPPITER The supreme Rite would be to bring about a climax in the death of the victim. By this Rite one would attain the summit of Magical Art. Even better would be to slay a girl, preferably a willing victim. After violating her, she should be cut into 9 pieces. These should not be eaten, but divided as follows: head, arms, legs, and quadrisected trunk. The names of the gods appropriate are to be written on the skin, the arms are then to be flayed, and burnt in honour of Pan or Vesta, the legs (treated in the same manner) should be offered to Priapus, Hermes, or Juno. The right shoulder is sacred to Jupiter, the left buttock to Venus. The head should not be flayed, but burnt simply, and that in honour either of Juno or Minerva. The Rite should not be employed on ordinary occasions, but rarely, and then for great purposes; it should not be disclosed to any man.1 I cannot admit to having performed this ritual; but I will admit to having spoken of it favourably to a Brother several years ago. He, replying that I could not possibly be serious in desiring to perform it, laughed, a stifled horror straining beneath his breath. Crowley repudiated this ritual, he reminded me. An “evil influence” had entered the temple before this vision was had – or so the Record said – and the supreme Rite was thus discounted as the trick of a malevolent demon. -

The Necronomicon
Dedication On the One Hundredth anniversary of the Nativity of the Poet ALEISTER CROWLEY 1875-1975 Ad Meiomrum Cthulhi Gloriam ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS THE EDITOR would like to thank all of the people whose cooperation and dedication to unspeakable horrors has made this book possible. First, our thanks go to that nameless monk who presented us with the originals., who has since disappeared. Second, to that ever-changing staff of translators who performed a most distasteful and oft'times unsatisfying task: to Ms. I. Celms, Ms. N. Papaspyrou, Mr. Peter Levenda, Mr. X. and Mr. Y. Third, to Ms. J. McNally, whose thorough knowledge and understanding of Craft folklore aided the Editor in assuming a proper perspective towards this Work. Fourth, to Mr. J. Birnbaum who aided in some of the preliminary practical research concerning the powers of the Book, and its dangers. Fifth, to Mr. L. K. Barnes, who dared to tempt the awesome wrath of the Ancient Ones, rising unspeakable eldritch horrors, in supporting the publication of this arcane treatise. Sixth, to all those patient Pagans and Friends of the Craft who waited, and waited for the eventual publication of this tome with baited breath . and something on the stove. Seventh, and perhaps most importantly, to Herman Slater of the Magickal Childe (nee Warlock Shop), whose constant encouragement and eternal kvetching was material to the completion of this Work. And, finally, to the Demon PERDURABO, without whose help the presentation of this Book would have been impossible. Blessed Be! TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION -
