View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Stirling Online Research Repository MAKING MUSIC RADIO THE RECORD INDUSTRY AND POPULAR MUSIC PRODUCTION IN THE UK James Mark Percival A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Film and Media Studies University of Stirling July 2007 J Mark Percival - Making music radio: the record industry and popular music production in the UK For my mother, Elizabeth Ann Percival (née Murphy) (1937-2004) and my father, Stanley Thomas Percival. J Mark Percival - Making music radio: the record industry and popular music production in the UK i ABSTRACT Music radio is the most listened to form of radio, and one of the least researched by academic ethnographers. This research project addresses industry structure and agency in an investigation into the relationship between music radio and the record industry in the UK, how that relationship works to produce music radio and to shape the production of popular music. The underlying context for this research is Peterson's production of culture perspective. The research is in three parts: a model of music radio production and consumption, an ethnographic investigation focusing on music radio programmers and record industry pluggers, and an ethnographic investigation into the use of specialist music radio programming by alternative pop and rock artists in Glasgow, Scotland. The research has four main conclusions: music radio continues to be central to the record industry's promotional strategy for new commercial recordings; music radio is increasing able to mediate the production practices of the popular music industry; that mediation is focused through the social relationship between music radio programmers and record industry pluggers; cultural practices of musicians are developed and mediated by consumption of specialist music radio, as they become part of specialist music radio.

Cloudspotting 2016 Music & Arts Festival Festival Programme 29 - 31 July 2016 Cloudspotting 1 29 - 31 July 2016 WE could never have imagined the adventures that were to come when Cloudspotting was first conceived over a few pints down the road in a Little Mitton beer garden back in 2011. To steal a quote from one of our headline acts, ‘the years slip by like sips of water’ – and we now find the metamorphosis from adult music weekender to ‘arts festival with kids’ is complete. While the feel of the festival might have moved on as a new generation shares the fun, we curate the music and arts activities with an open mind and try not to compromise on the original idea to bring original, challenging and imaginative performance to remotest Lancashire. We could not ask for a more unspoiled and intimate location to live the dream. The organisation behind the festival is a non-profit making Community Interest Company and we owe a debt of gratitude to the help of others to run the show. This includes the hard working people of the Forestry Commission and a number of strategic partners and individuals – many of them voluntary - who provide essential grant aid and invaluable support in-kind. Creative Lancashire has been one such partner down the years, supporting emerging musicians to perform at the festival, producing festival CDs and presenting ‘Conversations in Creativity’ with inspirational artists. This year, they have helped us produce the publication of this programme. We hope you like it. Have the best weekend and please tell everyone about it afterwards Helen Ficorilli & Matt Evans Team Cloudspotting “A classic combination of music, lovely food and drink, family and arts activities in a stunning location.

  • Chemikal Underground: “Post-Independent” Rock and Pop in Scotland? J. Mark Percival
Chemikal Underground: “Post-Independent” Rock and Pop in Scotland? J. Mark Percival Introduction In the second week of April 2005, Glasgow-based independent band The Delgados announced their decision to split up after eleven years and five critically acclaimed albums, including one Mercury Music Prize nominee. The four members of the band continue to run the Chemikal Underground record label and the company’s recording studio, Chem 19. Co-lead vocalist and guitarist Emma Pollock signed a solo deal with Beggars Banquet with whom she released one album, Watch The Fireworks. She released a second solo album, The Law of Large Numbers, on Chemikal Underground in 2010, and contributed to two musicians collective albums the same year by The Burns Unit and Fruit Tree Foundation. Co-lead vo- calist and guitarist Alun Woodward released a solo album in 2009 under the name Lord Cut-Glass. Other members of the band toured in 2005 as Arab Strap guitarist Malcolm Middleton’s backing band, supporting the Chemikal Underground album release Into The Woods. In 2010, the label reached its fifteenth year and has a rich back catalogue, including material from Mogwai, Arab Strap and Los Angeles-based Radar Brothers. The business practices and ideological approach of Chemikal Underground continue to con- found conventional popular music studies notions of relationships between the “independent” and the “mainstream.” Of course, there are other UK labels that occupy similar spaces, but Chemikal Underground is probably one of the best examples of what I wish to argue here is “post-independence.”1 1 The essence of “post-independence” is the combination of a focused ideo- logical and creative independence, combined with a clear understanding and use of contemporary mainstream music industry business practices.

El festival ha comptat al llarg de la seva història amb propostes dels més diversos colors i estils. Així ho demostren els artistes que durant aquests deu anys han desfilat pels seus escenaris: de Pixies a Aphex Twin, passant per Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Portishead, Pet Shop Boys, Pavement, Echo & The Bunnymen, Lou Reed, My Bloody Valentine, El-P, Pulp, Patti Smith, James Blake, Arcade Fire, Cat Power, Public Enemy, Grin- derman, Franz Ferdinand, Television, Devo, Enrique Morente, The White Stripes, LCD Soundsystem, Tinders- ticks, PJ Harvey, Shellac, Dinosaur Jr., New Order, Surfin’ Bichos, Fuck Buttons, Swans, Melvins, The National, Psychic TV, Spiritualized, The Cure, Bon Iver, La Buena Vida, Death Cab For Cutie, Iggy & The Stooges, De La Soul, Marianne Faithfull o Mazzy Star, entre molts d’altres.
