New programs were developed, such as the EMERGE summer program, which prepares new students in the areas of Math and English Language, as well as the MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers) Program, which is designed to prepare underrepresented minority students for careers in science. Progress was also made in developing NEIU‘s General Education Program into a University Core Curriculum, which includes more opportunities for engaged learning experiences. As you will find in this year‘s report, CAS programs have hosted career fairs, alumni events, student awards ceremonies, café societies, brown bag seminars and speaker series; and they have established scholarships for students. CAS students have conducted community-based research and service-learning projects in area neighborhoods; they have participated in internships at Chicago-area museums, government agencies and non-profit organizations; and they have attended professional meetings. Many of our students presented their research and creative projects at local, regional, national and international conferences, including NEIU‘s Annual Student Research and Creative Activities Symposium and SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Students in the Sciences). These and other applied learning activities provide important opportunities for professional development, and they prepare our students for careers and graduate school. For the last two years, the College of Arts and Sciences has pursued its Re-imagining Food Initiative, a joint effort between the CAS and NEIU‘s Division of Student Affairs. The initiative has brought together members of the NEIU and surrounding community to promote high-impact pedagogical practices and University-community engagement, in an effort to enhance the learning environment and to encourage student engagement around issues of social justice, food security, and sustainability. The CAS also celebrated the presentation of the Sarah Hoagland and Lawrence Frank Lectures, as well as the Art in Response to Violence Conference and Genocide Conference. 3 The College of Arts and Sciences was pleased to welcome six tenure-track faculty members to campus: Elyse Bolterstein in Biology, Andrew Brake in Social Work, Nadja Insel in Earth Science, Jimin Kahng in Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language, Ting Liu in Geography and Environmental Studies, and Marcos Feldman in Sociology. Our faculty also continued to excel in various areas of teaching, research and service. In the past year, six faculty members were awarded tenure, six were promoted to the rank of associate professor, and four were promoted to full professor. CAS faculty were also recognized for their exceptional teaching and research. The Audrey Reynolds Distinguished Teaching Award had two finalists, both from the CAS: Ana Fraiman of Chemistry and Cynthia Moran of Communication, Media and Theatre – who was named the recipient of the award. Likewise, the Bernard J. Brommel Distinguished Research Professor Award resulted in Christopher L. Schroeder of English being named a finalist. The award winner was Erica R. Meiners of the College of Education, who also teaches in the Women and Gender Studies program. Each year as a College, we continue to serve the academic and professional needs of our students; we celebrate the wonderful diversity of our programs and community; and we strive to uphold NEIU‘s values of integrity, excellence, access to opportunity, and empowerment through learning. Wamucii Njogu Dean 4 AFRICAN AND AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES Annual Report 2013-2014 Submitted by Marshall Thompson Executive Summary The African and African American Studies Program (AFAM) is the study, research, interpretation and dissemination of knowledge about Africans, both on the continent of Africa and in the Diaspora. Administratively, AFAM is housed in the Sociology Department as a part of a larger combined department that includes Sociology, Women Studies, and Latino and Latin American Studies programs. AFAM is designed to provide a curriculum that prepares its minors for advanced graduate studies in African/African American and African Diaspora Studies, international affairs, education, social work, social policy studies, and legal and professional training as well as in such fields as communications, writing, teaching, theatre, and dance. The mission of AFAM is to provide a high quality undergraduate interdisciplinary academic curriculum and services to enrich the educational experiences of Northeastern Illinois University‘s diverse faculty, staff, and student body. AFAM is an 18-credit hour program. The AFAM curriculum consists of three required core courses (9 credit hours). These three courses include: Introduction to African and American Studies (AFAM 200); Foundations of African Civilization (AFAM 301); and Foundations of Africans in the Diaspora (AFAM 302). The curriculum also includes three elective courses (9 credit hours) spread over 17 departments or programs. Students in the AFAM minor must select their three electives from at least two different departments including Anthropology, Art, Educational Leadership, Teacher Education, English, Foreign Languages, Geography and Environmental Studies, History, Inner City Studies, Justice Studies, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work. As an academic program, the objectives of AFAM are aligned with the NEIU strategic goal of fostering diversity and intercultural understanding. AFAM supports this strategic goal by (1) introducing students to the language, concepts and theoretical paradigms of African and African Diaspora Studies; (2) providing students with a framework and necessary skills to take a comprehensive approach to challenging and critiquing racist paradigms, assumptions, and theories; (3) grounding students in an 5 African-Centered epistemological framework that focuses on the cultural and human realities of African and African Diasporic thoughts and practices; (4) providing students with opportunities to explore the continuities and discontinuities among peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora; (5) providing students with international educational opportunities through participation in the University‘s study abroad programs; and (6) providing K-12 teachers with a knowledge base they can utilize to develop lesson plans and classroom curricula about Africa and its peoples throughout the world. During academic year 2013-2014, AFAM continued to make major programmatic developments and organizational strides. Some achievements include: 1) the planning, development, and successful implementation of the African Summer Institute for Teachers at NEIU, 2) planning and implementing the Third Annual African and African American Symposium: Silencing Genocide in Africa and the African Diaspora, 3) sponsoring, co-sponsoring, or participating in numerous programs, events, and projects, 4) strengthening our collaboration with the Program of African Studies at Northwestern University, and 5) the revision of the AFAM Program Goals and Outcomes. From July 8 through July 26, 2013, AFAM implemented its tenth annual African Summer Institute for K-12 teachers at Northeastern Illinois University. The Summer Institute is a three-week intensive program designed to provide K-12 teachers in the Chicago area with a knowledge base and pedagogical skills they can utilize to develop lesson plans and classroom curricula about Africa and its peoples. Enrollees have included: public school teachers, NEIU students, and instructors from the City Colleges of Chicago. Several NEIU professors and staff participated as instructors, including: Josef Ben-Levi (EICS), Courtney Francis (TESOL), Alfred Frankowski (Philosophy), Tracy Luedke (Anthropology), Nicholas Kilzer (Anthropology), William Stone ( TESL), T.Y. Okosun (Justice Studies), Durene Wheeler (EICS), Jeanine Ntihirageza (TESOL), Edward Kasule (Political Science), Wamucii Njogu (Dean, CAS), Beverly Rowls (CTC), Barbara Scott (Sociology), Job Ngwe (Social Work), Jade Stanley (Social Work), Marshall Thompson (Political Science), and Gilo Kwesi Logan (Justice Studies). The overall goal of this year‘s Institute was to advance knowledge and understanding of the African continent and its peoples and to explore new and more effective approaches

How is it different from recent "attempts" at feminist juris- prudence,' if at all? How is it different from jurisprudential at- tempts to ground homosexuality, 2 if at all? And if lesbian jurisprudence exists, what are its characteristics, its concerns, its methodologies? And if lesbian jurisprudence is being created, what should be its characteristics, its concerns, its methodologies? This article poses the question of lesbian jurisprudence. In order to understand the complexity of the question, this article first offers some preliminary definitions for lesbianism as well as a brief explication of jurisprudence. Combining lesbian and juris- prudence into a question, this article limits the question by re- jecting two possible answers: that lesbian jurisprudence is feminist jurisprudence and that lesbian jurisprudence is a paradigm capable of universal application. The article then seeks to give present im- aginative content to the question by drawing upon mythical meta- phors from our collective past and by surveying science fiction conceptions of the future. The mythical metaphors serve a pur- pose similar to that served by the common embodiment of justice as a woman blindfolded and holding a scale.

Several morphological traits are plesiomorphic, such as the short prothorax, characters of the wing venation and possibly also the lack of discoidal spines on the fore femora. On the other hand, Metallyticus has autapomor- phies which are unique among extant Mantodea, such as the iridescent bluish-green body coloration and the enlargement of the first posteroventral spine of the fore femora. The present publication reviews our knowledge of Metallyticus thus providing a basis for further research. Data on 115 Metallyticus specimens are gathered and interpreted. The Latin original descriptions of the five Metallyticus species known to date, as well as additional descriptions and a key to species level that were originally published by Giglio-Tos (1927) in French, are translated into English.

Dollar Harvard BioRobotics Laboratory Technical Report Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences Harvard University April 5, 2001 www.biorobotics.harvard.edu Introduction The purpose of this review is to report on the existing literature on the subject of arthropod grasping and manipulation. In order to gain a proper understanding of the state of the knowledge in this rather broad topic, it is necessary and appropriate to take a step backwards and become familiar with the basics of entomology and arthropod physiology. Once these principles have been understood it will then be possible to proceed towards the more specific literature that has been published in the field. The structure of the review follows this strategy. General background information will be presented first, followed by successively more specific topics, and ending with a review of the refereed journal articles related to arthropod grasping and manipulation. Background The phylum Arthropoda is the largest of the phyla, and includes all animals that have an exoskeleton, a segmented body in series, and six or more jointed legs. There are nine classes within the phylum, five of which the average human is relatively familiar with – insects, arachnids, crustaceans, centipedes, and millipedes. Of all known species of animals on the planet, 82% are arthropods (c. 980,000 species)! And this number just reflects the known species. Estimates put the number of arthropod species remaining to be discovered and named at around 9-30 million, or 10-30 times more than are currently known. And this is just the number of species; the population of each is another matter altogether.

Nomura URBAN NATURALIST Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs Ayako Nagase1,*, Yoriyuki Yamada2, Tadataka Aoki2, and Masashi Nomura3 Abstract - Urban biodiversity is an important ecological goal that drives green-roof in- stallation. We studied 2 kinds of green roofs designed to optimize biodiversity benefits: the Harappa (extensive) roof and the Biotope (intensive) roof. The Harappa roof mimics vacant-lot vegetation. It is relatively inexpensive, is made from recycled materials, and features community participation in the processes of design, construction, and mainte- nance. The Biotope roof includes mainly native and host plant species for arthropods, as well as water features and stones to create a wide range of habitats. This study is the first to showcase the Harappa roof and to compare biodiversity on Harappa and Biotope roofs. Arthropod species richness was significantly greater on the Biotope roof. The Harappa roof had dynamic seasonal changes in vegetation and mainly provided habitats for grassland fauna. In contrast, the Biotope roof provided stable habitats for various arthropods. Herein, we outline a set of testable hypotheses for future comparison of these different types of green roofs aimed at supporting urban biodiversity. Introduction Rapid urban growth and associated anthropogenic environmental change have been identified as major threats to biodiversity at a global scale (Grimm et al. 2008, Güneralp and Seto 2013). Green roofs can partially compensate for the loss of green areas by replacing impervious rooftop surfaces and thus, contribute to urban biodiversity (Brenneisen 2006).

BY OWEN KEEHNEN It’s tough to out-butch Christy Webber. The small-town girl from Montrose, Mich. (near Flint), grew up loving to hunt, fish, skate and snowmobile. The outdoors was her playground. As a teen she was the National Powder Puff Motorcross Champion. She attended college at the University of Denver, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in physical education and played sports for the university, most notably Wilson as a star on the women’s basketball team. After college Webber worked briefly as a P.E. teacher, Cruz at but always felt she had some bigger contribu- tion to make. Soon after, she discovered that Roosevelt page 7 something and over the next two decades Web- ber has made an impressive name for herself in Chicago with her landscaping business. Jennie Rule met Christy Webber eight years ago at Girlbar on North Halsted. That night, Rule recalls coming down the stairs and being first captivated by Webber’s white shoes. At first glance she thought, “Thank God; finally a lesbian with some fashion sense!” At that point in her life, Rule had been with a couple of women, but was looking to go back to men. In the months to come, Webber would change all that.

Burger continued collecting. Burger sent four shipments of natural history material to Leiden (Yamaguchi, 1993: 79) and many insect collections were included in these (Holthuis & Sakai, 1970). As soon as our research began we found that the material collected by von Siebold and Burger had not always been kept separate, and that Burger's material often bore labels with "Japan" only. For example, de Haan (1842-1844) apparently dedicated the specific name of Decticvs biirgeri de Haan, 1843 (p. 214) to Burger, but the four "Cotypus" specimens of D. biirgeri only bear a small, square hand-written label "Japan" (PI. 5: Fig. B). De Haan indicated Burger's name as collector for Phasma (Acanthoderus) japonicum de Haan, 1842 (p. 135) too. With Blattella nipponica Asahina, 1963 we found a circular label with "Japan", the letter being underlined (Fig. 11). This characteristic style is fre quently found on labels among specimens of Orthoptera and related orders. Conocephalus crassiceps de Haan, 1843bears a circular label inscribed "BurgerJapan" (PI. 5: G), so we tentatively assign the specimens bearing those labels to either the Burger or Siebold collection.
