Exploring human experience in the North research arƟ cle “Indigenizing” the Bush Pilot in CBC’s ArcƟ c Air Renée Hulan Saint Mary’s University, Halifax Abstract When the Canadian BroadcasƟ ng CorporaƟ on (CBC) cut original programming in 2014, it cancelled the drama that had earned the network’s highest raƟ ngs in over a decade. Arc c Air, based on Omni Films’ reality TV show Buff alo Air, created a diverse cast of characters around a Dene bush pilot and airline co-owner played by Adam Beach. Despite its cancellaƟ on, episodes can sƟ ll be viewed on the CBC website, and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has conƟ nued broadcasƟ ng the popular show. Through a content analysis of Arc c Air and its associated paratext, read in relaƟ on to the stock Canadian literary fi gure of the heroic bush pilot, this arƟ cle argues that when viewed on the CBC, the program visually “Indigenizes” the bush pilot character, but suggests only one way forward for Indigenous people. On the “naƟ onal broadcaster,” the imagined urban, mulƟ cultural North of Arc c Air—in which Indigenous people are one cultural group among others parƟ cipaƟ ng in commercial ventures—serves to normalize resource development and extracƟ on. Broadcast on APTN, however, where the show appears in the context of programming that represents Indigenous people in a wide range of roles, genres, and scenarios, Arc c Air takes on new meaning. The luncheon on Friday, Oct. 2, fed 63 seniors in celebration of National Seniors Day which helps pay tribute to those who’ve helped build our country and communities. The Grade 12 class at Lundar School helped pre- pare and serve food, and even helped the seniors to their seats. “I told our Grade 12’s about this on the very fi rst day of school,” said Lun- dar School principal, Jane Dupre. “Me and my staff are really into building a sense of community in our school and this is one of those ways we can connect to our community. This was something that was done out of the goodness of our hearts.” There’s a valuable lesson for stu- dents in giving back to others self- lessly. Helping support your com- munity by volunteering your time and effort on things that make others feel good. And perhaps there’s even a much more long-term lesson about seeing the fruits of your labours com- ing back to you. Airbus and the Government of Québec become sole owners of the A220 Programme as Bombardier completes its strategic exit from Commercial Aviation @Airbus @Bombardier #A220 Bombardier transfers its remaining interest in Airbus Canada Limited Partnership (Airbus Canada) to Airbus SE and the Government of Québec Airbus now holds 75 percent of Airbus Canada with the Government of Québec increasing its holding to 25 percent for no cash consideration Bombardier work packages for the A220 and A330 will be transferred to Airbus, through its subsidiary Stelia Aerospace, securing 360 jobs in Québec Bombardier will receive US$591M, net of adjustments, of which US$531M was received at closing, and is released of its future funding capital requirement to Airbus Canada Over 3,300 Airbus jobs secured in Québec Amsterdam / Montreal, 12 February 2020 – Airbus SE (EPA: AIR), the Government of Québec and Bombardier Inc. (TSX: BBD.B) have agreed upon a new ownership structure for the A220 programme, whereby Bombardier transferred its remaining shares in Airbus Canada Limited Partnership (Airbus Canada) to Airbus and the Government of Québec. The transaction is effective immediately. This agreement brings the shareholdings in Airbus Canada, responsible for the A220, to 75 percent for Airbus and 25 percent for the Government of Québec respectively. The Government’s stake is redeemable by Airbus in 2026 - three years later than before. As part of this transaction, Airbus, via its wholly owned subsidiary Stelia Aerospace, has also acquired the A220 and A330 work package production capabilities from Bombardier in Saint- Laurent, Québec. This new agreement underlines the commitment of Airbus and the Government of Québec to the A220 programme during this phase of continuous ramp-up and increasing customer demand. -

Northwest Territories Economic Fact Sheet - Updated Fall 2011 Introduction The Northwest Territories’ strong resource base provides it with one of the most favourable long term outlooks in Canada. • With development of the Mackenzie Gas Project, the Conference Board of Canada predicts the GDP will climb to $9.6 billion by 2020. • The proposed Mackenzie Gas project will be one of Canada’s largest investments (over $16 billion). • At least seven new mining projects are expected over the next decade – these would add over 2,000 new direct jobs. Other opportunities exist for shale gas development near the NWT and British Columbia border and in the Sahtu region of the NWT. • Diamonds remain the major pillar of the Territory’s economy. The NWT has three operating diamond mines, and another in development. The NWT produces 17% of the world’s gem diamonds by value. Key Economic Indicators for the Northwest Territories • GDP was $4.1 billion in 2009, up 80% since division of the NWT and Nunavut in 1999. • $94,429 per capita GDP in 2009 - the highest in Canada - and $61,159 in exports per capita in 2009. • $98,300 median income in 2009 - the highest in Canada; 44% above the national average. • 72% rate of employment - is 9% higher than the Canadian average in July 2011 Key Industries Mining The NWT is a major diamond producer, accounting for 85% of Canada’s diamond production by value, and 16% of world production. A number of mining projects are nearing development, including Avalon’s rare earth element project, NICO’s Gold-Cobalt- Bismuth-Copper project, the Gahcho Kue diamond project and the Prairie Creek Mine, a zinc/lead/silver property.
