Air Force sustainment must be mobile, robust, flexible, responsive, technologically superior and fully interop- erable. It must balance capabilities and requirements for both material and per- sonnel. In essence, it must be constant and consistent to be relevant and combat effective. -CFAWC, Projecting Power: Canada’s Air Force 2035 INTRODUCTION Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Alert is a Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) facility operated in the High Arctic on behalf of the Government of Canada by the Canadian Armed Forces. “The role of CFS Alert is to operate and maintain signals intelligence and geolocation facilities.”1 While its primary mission is SIGINT, it also conducts sovereignty missions and supports scien- tific research. Due to its remote location and hostile environment it needs to be re-supplied by air. That sustainment operation is called BOXTOP. Operation (Op) BOXTOP is the primary source of fuel and logistics sustainment to both CFS Alert and Fort Eureka each year. It is done over two separate periods, one in the spring after daylight returns, and one in the fall before full darkness. Each Operation is planned for a period of approximately three weeks during which time Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) aircraft will be staged out of Thule Air Base (AB), Greenland with one aircraft based at CFS Alert. The sin- gle aircraft staged from Alert will be dedicated to the transport Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) from Resolute, Nunavut, while the preponderance is used for air-bridge sorties between CFS Alert and Thule AB. 1 Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian Forces Organization Order (CFOO) 261200z - 0208 CFS Alert (Ottawa, ON: Canadian Armed Forces, 2008). 2 The spring, or wet, Operation BOXTOP is focused on fuel re-supply; Jet Propellant 8 (JP-8) for aircraft, DF-82 for heating, and ULSD for vehicles. The fall, or dry, Operation BOX- TOP is focused on ferrying the supplies shipped by barge from the Port of Montreal to Thule AB early in the summer, and usually consists of construction materials, dry goods, spare parts for equipment and machinery, and a fuel farm top-up. On average the modern Operation BOXTOP is a round-the-clock operation which consists of approximately 50 augmentees at CFS Alert and 100 Thule AB. The personnel come from a number of trades which include pilots, air combat systems operators (formerly navigators), flight engineers, load masters, maintenance technicians, logistics, and traffic techs in mobile air movement sections (MAMS), along with a number of other trades in support roles. The RCAF normally tasks 3-4x CC-130 Hercules, 1x CC-177 Globemaster III (RCAF designation for the Boeing C-17), and 1x CC-150 Polaris (RCAF desig- nation for the Airbus A310-300) for passenger transport and light cargo between 8 Wing Trenton and Thule AB during the deployment and re-deployment phases of the operation. The enforced selection of Etah, North Green- land, seriously handicapped the work of the expedition from start to finish, while the. expenses of the party were more than doubled. The. first accident, the grounding of the Diana upon the coast of Labrador, was a regrettable adventure. The consequent delay, due to unloading, chartering, and reloading, resulted in such a late arrival at Etah that our plans were disarranged. It curtailed in many ways the eageimess of the men to reach their objective point at the head of Flagler Bay, te proposed site of the winter quarters. The leader and his party being but passengers upon a chartered ship was another handicap, since the captain emphatically declared that he would not steam across Smith Sound. There was but one decision to be made, namely: to land upon the North Greenland shore within striking distance of Cape Sabine.

    Exploring human experience in the North research arƟ cle “Indigenizing” the Bush Pilot in CBC’s ArcƟ c Air Renée Hulan Saint Mary’s University, Halifax Abstract When the Canadian BroadcasƟ ng CorporaƟ on (CBC) cut original programming in 2014, it cancelled the drama that had earned the network’s highest raƟ ngs in over a decade. Arc c Air, based on Omni Films’ reality TV show Buff alo Air, created a diverse cast of characters around a Dene bush pilot and airline co-owner played by Adam Beach. Despite its cancellaƟ on, episodes can sƟ ll be viewed on the CBC website, and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has conƟ nued broadcasƟ ng the popular show. Through a content analysis of Arc c Air and its associated paratext, read in relaƟ on to the stock Canadian literary fi gure of the heroic bush pilot, this arƟ cle argues that when viewed on the CBC, the program visually “Indigenizes” the bush pilot character, but suggests only one way forward for Indigenous people. On the “naƟ onal broadcaster,” the imagined urban, mulƟ cultural North of Arc c Air—in which Indigenous people are one cultural group among others parƟ cipaƟ ng in commercial ventures—serves to normalize resource development and extracƟ on. Broadcast on APTN, however, where the show appears in the context of programming that represents Indigenous people in a wide range of roles, genres, and scenarios, Arc c Air takes on new meaning. The Grade 12 class at Lundar School helped pre- pare and serve food, and even helped the seniors to their seats. “I told our Grade 12’s about this on the very fi rst day of school,” said Lun- dar School principal, Jane Dupre. “Me and my staff are really into building a sense of community in our school and this is one of those ways we can connect to our community. This was something that was done out of the goodness of our hearts.” There’s a valuable lesson for stu- dents in giving back to others self- lessly. Helping support your com- munity by volunteering your time and effort on things that make others feel good. And perhaps there’s even a much more long-term lesson about seeing the fruits of your labours com- ing back to you.
