National Basketball Association Scheduling Simulation
National Basketball Association Scheduling Simulation 21-393 Final Project, Fall 2016 Shengqi Chai, Yutong Li, Liyunshu Qian, Ming Yang Department of Mathematics Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Table of Contents I. Abstract II. Background and Problem Description III. Solution IV. Results V. Conclusion VI. Reference Page 1 of 12 I. Abstract Sport scheduling is a complex task in the presence of a myriad of conflicting requirements and preferences. In this work, our primary goal is to find a feasible and approximately optimal schedule in terms of travel distance for the 30 teams in National Basketball Association. We focus on the schedule for the regular season, which usually spans over a 5-month duration. Existing approaches to build a schedule from scratch tends to suffer from substantial runtime overhead. In particular, it is computationally infeasible to solve the problem directly using linear programming and constraint programming due to the complicate formats and rules for NBA scheduling. Thus for the sake of simplification, we adopted assumptions so that integer programming is applicable. Additionally, we approached the problem using divide and conquer to reduce computational complexity. Apart from Operations Research techniques, methods from Machine Learning and Data Collection are also exploited in finding the solution. Our approach yields reliable schedules in a reasonable runtime, and the algorithm should be applicable, with slight modifications, to any scheduling problems in single-round robin or double-round robin fashion. II. Problem Background National Basketball Association is the preeminent men’s professional basketball league in North America, and is widely considered as one of the best basketball leagues in the world. -

PDF | World Cup: Does Your Team Really Always Want To
Economic and Financial Analysis 11 July 2018 World Cup: Does your team really always want to Article win? The knockout stages of the World Cup not only provided plenty of drama but also some great football. With only a few teams left, every one of them is now desperate for a win. But across the competition, that hasn't always been the case; distorted incentives can sometimes make a loss look like a more appealing option Source: Shutterstock Content - An incentivised loss? - Information asymmetry and a historical disgrace - 'Fair play' gone wrong - Careful with rule changes An incentivised loss? The round-robin format of the group stages, with two teams advancing out of groups of four, certainly helps to limit the influence of luck on the selection of the knockout-phase participants. But it can also distort incentives - and sometimes, going for the win might not really seem worth it. One example was the match between England and Belgium, which the latter ended up winning 1-0. Both teams had already qualified for the round of 16 and were only playing for the first two spots in the group. After Belgium scored, the English team didn’t look too keen to equalise – and it had been speculated in advance that both teams might want to avoid winning the group. This was because even though a first-place finish would pit a squad against a second-place team from another group and make for an apparently easier round-of-16 matchup, the runner- up was perceived to be placed in that half of the tournament bracket that is the easier way to the final. -

Season Seat Holder Retention in Minor League Baseball Abstract In lieu of an abstract, here is the paper's first paragraph: In minor league (AAA) baseball the amount of season tickets sold for the season can account for at least fifteen percent of total paid attendance for the. With this in mind a sport manager may wonder what brings season ticket buyers back season after season, and what can be done to measure this occurrence. An added question for front office staff members is, do these reasons coincide with a team’s marketing strategy to maximize the amount of fans who buy season tickets? To analyze this occurrence I looked into exactly what behavior fans exhibit and their motivation to purchase. -
FIFA, Scandal, and Corporate Sponsors in 2015
FIFA, Scandal, and Corporate Sponsors in The American investigation began with a case 1 involving tax avoidance by a U.S. resident who was 2015 affiliated with FIFA. The case then spread to other officials of the association and its members. Several officials secretly admitted guilt and cooperated with the investigation during the two years prior to the public charges. In announcing the charges, recently-appointed U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said that the individuals under indictment “were expected to uphold the rules that keep soccer honest, and protect the integrity of the game. Instead, they corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and enrich themselves.” The current charges are likely to have a major impact on FIFA and its leadership. The association’s president, Sepp Blatter, who was not charged, initially announced On May 27, 2015 Swiss police raided a leadership that he would lead the cleanup of the association, meeting of FIFA, international football’s governing which he had headed since 1998. On May 29, Blatter body, at a luxury hotel in Zurich, Switzerland. The raid was easily reelected to a fifth term. Within days, stemmed from Swiss inquiries concerning FIFA’s though, new allegations surfaced that FIFA’s general award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and secretary, who reports to the president, was responsible Qatar, as well U.S. investigations of soccer federations for paying a $10 million bribe in South Africa’s bid to in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean host the 2010 World Cup. Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction?
Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction? Glen ME Duerr Department of History and Government Cedarville University 104 HRS, 251 N. Main Street Cedarville, Ohio, USA 45314 [email protected] RASAALA, Vol. 5, No. 1 (2014) 1 Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction? Abstract This paper examines the interrelated issues of time and money in club and international football. Specifically, the focus is on small Caribbean countries and territories that are rich in talent, but poor in opportunities. In the past decade, several professional teams in the Caribbean have played in the minor league system in North America, but have been stifled by several factors. This paper argues that the creation of a ‘Caribbean division’ that plays in either the North American Soccer League (NASL) or United Soccer League (USL)-Pro league would enrich and develop teams and players from all parties involved, and they would be more competitive in FIFA World Cup qualifying. The key ingredient is correctly timing such a venture. Keywords: Caribbean, soccer, North America, USL-Pro, NASL RASAALA, Vol. 5, No. 1 (2014) 2 Introduction Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the regional governing body of soccer in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, sends three and a half teams to the quadrennial FIFA World Cup. The fourth-placed CONCACAF team plays a home and away playoff series against a team in another region, either in Asia, South America or Oceania, depending on the rotation. On every occasion since the number of berths was expanded to three in 1998, the United States and Mexico have taken two of the berths. -

Ranking of National Soccer Teams
RANKING OF NATIONAL SOCCER TEAMS P.C. van der Kruit 0. Introduction. Since 1993 the F´ed´eration International de Football Associations FIFA (and the Coca-Cola Com- pany) have published lists (dubbed the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking) with a ranking of national soccer teams (officially monthly but in practice ten times a year). These are based on the results of matches played between teams at world or regional championships and of friendly games. I will use \soccer" rather than the \football" that stands for the second F in the acronymn FIFA. There are basically two possible approaches to rankings. The first is an attempt to put players or teams in a time-independent perspective. A good example of that is the extensive analysis made of baseball results in the USA by e.g. the Society of American Baseball Researchers (\Sabermetrics"). In that approach one tries to correct for temporal changes in how the game is played, changes of rules or strategy, and for technical and other developments that affect the game. Another approach is to try and quantify the current relative strengths of teams. In individual sports, such as track and field, this is comparable to world records (or regional, national, personal or seasonal ones), while the first approach would try and correct for the development that has occured with time. The FIFA has chosen for the second approach. In the explanation on the \World Ranking" provided on the Web-page of the FIFA, there is however no indication that this actually was a concious decision. As a matter of fact, it doesn't state at all what the background and rationale of the ranking are. -

Media Release
Media Release World Leagues Forum Schützengasse 4 8001 Zürich Switzerland The World Leagues Forum: “Domestic leagues unanimously reject the super league concept but also request better representation in the football governance” Zurich, Switzerland – 23 April 2021 – Following the recent events on the European breakaway league, the board of the World Leagues Forum (WLF), the association which represents professional football leagues on a world level met today. This board includes the following leagues: Premier League (England), Ligue de Football Professionnel (France), DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga (Germany), Lega Serie A (Italy), Russian Premier League (Russia), LaLiga (Spain), Premier League Soccer (South Africa), LigaPro (Ecuador), Major League Soccer (USA), Liga MX (Mexico), J.League (Japan) and Professional Saudi League (Saudi Arabia). The WLF issues the following statement: “The World Leagues Forum not only rejects the concept of the super league, but also requests better representation of the leagues in football governance. This is the consequence of the lessons which can be drawn from this week’s events: One: The European super league project reflected the money-driven vision a small group of already super rich clubs. This vision has been rejected by everyone in football and outside football. But most importantly, it has been rejected by the fans. It has shown that sport values such as sporting merit and solidarity must always prevail. Two: Any international competition where some clubs would have a permanent right to play without qualifying from domestic leagues is a terrible idea. Not only it disregards the values of sport, but it neglects the importance of domestic competitions from an historical, from an economic, and from a fan perspective. -
Match Injury Incidence During the Super Rugby Tournament Is High : a Prospective Cohort Study Over Five Seasons Involving 93 641 Player-Hours
Schwellnus, M.P. et al. (2018). Match injury incidence during the Super Rugby tournament is high : a prospective cohort study over five seasons involving 93 641 player-hours. British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2018: 1-8. http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2018-09915 Match injury incidence during the Super Rugby tournament is high: a prospective cohort study over five seasons involving 93 641 player- hours Martin P Schwellnus, Esme Jordaan, Charl Janse van Rensburg, Helen Bayne, Wayne Derman, Clint Readhead, Rob Collins, Alan Kourie, Jason Suter and Org Strauss Abstract: Objectives To determine the incidence and nature of injuries in the Super Rugby tournament over a 5- year period. Methods 482 male professional rugby union players from six South African teams participating in the Super Rugby tournament were studied (1020 player-seasons). Medical staff of participating teams (2012–2016 tournaments) recorded all time loss injuries (total injuries and match injuries) and exposure hours (93 641 total playing hours; 8032 match hours). Injury incidence, injured player proportion, severity (time lost), anatomical location, tissue type and activity/phase during which injury occurred are reported. Results The overall incidence of match injuries (per 1000 player-hours; 95% CI) for each year was as follows: 2012 (83.3; 69.4–99.2); 2013 (115.1; 98.7–133.5); 2014 (95.9; 80.8–113.1), 2015 (112.3; 96.6–129.9) and 2016 (93.2; 79.9–107.9). The injured player proportion for each year was as follows: 2012 (54.6%); 2013 (49.4%); 2014 (52.0%); 2015 (50.0%); and 2016 (39.8%).
