The International Energy Agency undermines global climate protection and energy security in its latest World Energy Outlook Berlin, November 2016 The International Energy Agency’s call for new investments in fossil fuels, in particular oil and gas, in its latest World Energy Outlook (WEO) undermines the agency’s seemingly positive messages related to climate protection and the development of renewable energy, an analysis by the Energy Watch Group shows. The World Energy Outlook 2016, which was presented today in Berlin, calls for increased investment in oil and gas due to oil discoveries at lowest level in more than 60 years and low oil prices. The International Energy Agency (IEA) thereby disregards that the current low investment is in fact caused by the lack of new discoveries and the depletion of existing reserves. Moreover, higher oil prices will not be able to compensate for the lack of funding as cost reductions in the renewable energy sector increasingly challenge the competitiveness of oil and gas. „Even if oil prices were to rise again, future oil production will not stay at today’s level, simply because of the limited availability. By calling for increased investments in oil, the IEA undermines climate protection efforts and threatens the global energy security. Only a rapid development of renewable energies can close the emerging energy supply gap. Oil investments are not able to do so”, says President of the Energy Watch Group and former member of the German Parliament Hans-Josef Fell. “Even in its most optimistic scenario, the IEA projects the future level of development of renewable energies to be far below today´s rates. -

October 19, 2020 To the CEOs of major global asset managers, banks, and insurers: We, the undersigned group of Indigenous women and organizations, call on your institutions to stop financing, investing in, and insuring the expansion of tar sands oil extraction, transport, and refining, and commit to phasing out support for tar sands oil. These measures should encompass both projects and the companies that build and operate such projects. The tar sands sector poses grave threats to Indigenous rights, cultural survival, local waterways and environments, the global climate, and public health. Furthermore, this year saw a significant set of losses in the oil and petroleum sector, and no subsector has had a worse financial prognosis than tar sands oil. The destructiveness of tar sands has been well-documented, and the sector’s growth has been inhibited by legal challenges, financial uncertainty, and grassroots resistance. Though governments and corporations are still calling for the expansion of the tar sands, current tar sands production is restricted by a pipeline bottleneck, which means that the future of increased tar sands extraction depends on three pipelines. With fossil fuel corporations plowing ahead with pipeline construction in the midst of a global pandemic and massive financial meltdown, we urge your institutions to immediately decline any support for TC Energy’s Keystone XL pipeline, Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline, and the Canadian government’s Trans Mountain pipeline – and to cut ties with these tar sands projects and companies. At this moment, tar sands extraction and construction poses major risks to the health of communities and workers due to COVID-19 transmission. -

The Energy Watch Group (EWG) and Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), have documented and analyzed the long history of IEA’s misleading and false projections on the renewable energy development. On November 14, the IEA presented its flagship report, the “World Energy Outlook 2017” (WEO). In a new analysis of the World Energy Outlook 2017 by the EWG, LUT together with Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas Germany have looked closely into the misleading projections of the IEA on solar energy and oil production. Solar Energy: Although the IEA revised its extremely pessimistic forecast on renewable energy, following a wave of international critique, is it consistently ignoring their exponential growth over the last years. Especially growth rates of solar PV are underestimated. The IEA estimated annual installations of PV from 2018 till 2030 constantly below 80 GW, even tough the past years have displayed consistent growth, showing that by 2017 annual installations of 100 GW are expected. Crude Oil: Regarding oil production, the IEA still propagates the projection that by 2040 oil consumption can surpass the peak value of 2015, which accounted 92,7 Mboe/d, by more than 100 Mboe/d. Taking a closer look at the results and facts in the WEO 2017 “new policy scenario”, one might be surprised that the euphoria, which the IEA has spread regarding the availability of crude oil, cannot not be found and verified in their own detailed analysis. -

Peak oil will have a costly inflationary effect on all aspects of our industrial society, including portable liquid fuels, agriculture (including planting, fertilizing, and harvesting), oil-dependent delivery of other energy sources, asphalt pavement, plastics, hydraulics and lubrication, and building materials. In 2006, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) defined “peak oil” as “the theory that the world’s oil production rate will reach a maximum and then decline.” In an accompanying report, the DOE quoted petroleum geologist Colin J. Campbell and petroleum engineer Jean H. Laherrere, who concluded that “[t]he world is not running out of oil--at least not yet. The creation of your position, and your long history of leadership on climate change, is an important sign of the commitment the Biden administration has to achieving a 100% clean energy economy. We look forward to working with you to ensure we protect the workers and the communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Today we write to request your support and leadership in urgently addressing one of the most important and overlooked drivers of climate change: ending the flow of private finance from Wall Street to the industries driving climate change around the world — fossil fuels and forest-risk commodities. As Bill McKibben has written, “money is the oxygen on which the fire of global warming burns.”1 Since the Paris Agreement was signed, that fire has been raging: $3.8 trillion from global banks has flowed to fossil fuels from 2016-2020;2 over that same period, global banks invested over $191 billion in forest-risk commodities worldwide.3 The largest fossil fuel lenders, insurance providers, and institutional investors are all U.S.-headquartered firms. JPMorgan Chase has been the largest fossil fuel banker in the world by a wide margin in recent years.4 Companies like Liberty Mutual, AIG, and Chubb exacerbate climate risks by supporting increasingly risky fossil fuel development. -

January 10, 2019 Re: Legislation to Address the Urgent Threat of Climate Change Dear Representative: On behalf of our millions of members and supporters, we are writing today to urge you to consider the following principles as the 116th Congress debates climate change legislation and momentum around the country builds for a Green New Deal. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently warned, if we are to keep global warming below 1.5°C, we must act aggressively and quickly. At a minimum, reaching that target requires visionary and affirmative legislative action in the following areas: Halt all fossil fuel leasing, phase out all fossil fuel extraction, and end fossil fuel and other dirty energy subsidies. The science is clear that fossil fuels must be kept in the ground. Pursuing new fossil fuel projects at this moment in history is folly. Most immediately, the federal government must stop selling off or leasing publicly owned lands, water, and mineral rights for development to fossil fuel producers. The government must also stop approving fossil fuel power plants and infrastructure projects. We must reverse recent legislation that ended the 40-year ban on the export of crude oil, end the export of all other fossil fuels, and overhaul relevant statutes that govern fossil fuel extraction in order to pursue a managed decline of fossil fuel production. Further, the federal government must immediately end the massive, irrational subsidies and other financial support that fossil fuel, and other dirty energy companies (such as nuclear, waste incineration and biomass energy) continue to receive both domestically and overseas.
