Will they deliver a bounteous future previously unimaginable, or a barren soulless prison of man’s making? Perennial questions. Here we examine how they were addressed in the 1920s through the writings of industrialists, engineers, economists, clergymen, novelists, a dramatist, a humorist, and other voices who cheered, mourned, or questioned the longterm consequences for man of his precocious offspring, the machine. People call this the mechanistic age, enlarge upon its many Edward S. Martin objectionable features and grumble about the acceleration of “Model T and the Millennium” life and all that. But what would they have? Is the mechanistic Harper’s, February 1928 age a good thing or a bad thing? Is the speeding up of life a basis for satisfaction or for regret? Twenty miles on the highway in old times used to be a pretty fair day’s work for a team. It took three or four hours to do it. When it was done the horses needed to rest and be fed. Now it is something to be done, where the roads are good, in half an hour or a little more by a creature that is not tired when it has done it. The speeding up of life is trying of course, but who can doubt that it is an immense achievement! Our great property in this life is time, and when we get about more quickly we save it. -

BECOMING MODERN: AMERICA IN THE 1920S PRIMARY SOURCE COLLECTION * Chicago Daily Tribune IN POLITICAL CARTOONS HE WENTIES T T Founded in 1847, the Chicago Tribune is one of the oldest American newspapers in circulation. In the 1920s its Republican editorial stand mirrored main- stream American political opinion. Twenty-four political cartoons from the Tribune are presented here—two per year from 1918 to 1929 — created by the longtime Tribune cartoonists John McCutcheon and Carey Orr, whose instantly recognizable work was widely reprinted through- out the country. To analyze a political cartoon, consider its: CONTENT. First, basically describe what is drawn in the cartoon (without referring to the labels). What is depicted? What is happening? CONTEXT. Consider the timing. What is happening in national events at the time of the cartoon? Check the date: what occurred in the days and weeks before the cartoon appeared? “A Little Premature, But—They’re Just Tuning Up” LABELS. 1 When Is the Now in the Here and There? Trans-Diegetic Music in Hal Ashby’s Coming Home Aaron Hunter, Queen’s University Belfast Abstract: While it would be a stretch to classify Hal Ashby as a postmodernist filmmaker (with that term’s many attendant ambiguities), his films of the 1970s regularly evince post-Classical stylistic and narrative strategies, including non-linear time structures, inter-textual self-references, open endings, and nuanced subversions of the fourth wall. Ashby’s most consistently playful approach to form comes by way of his integration and development of trans-diegetic musical sequences within his body of work. Music in Ashby films creates a lively sense of unpredictability, and each of his seven films of the 1970s employs this strategy at least once. Moreover, trans-diegetic music in Ashby’s films becomes a device that allows the director to elide moments in time. It functions as an editing tool, creating a bridge between often disparate events. However, it is also a narrative device that both compresses and stretches time, allowing for an on-screen confluence of events that at first appear to take place simultaneously or sequentially, but which actually occur over different moments or lengths of time. Yet while Ashby is not alone as a Hollywood director interested in exploring the formal possibilities that trans-diegesis might bring to his movies, film studies has begun only relatively recently to explore and analyse this technique. After briefly discussing the current critical discussion of trans-diegetic music and explicating patterns of its use in Ashby’s career, this paper explores an extended display of the strategy in the film Coming Home (1978).
