Students were invited to come up with prequels or sequels to fairy tales, to develop characters inspired by random objects, to take part in a World Book Day quiz or to portray well-known tales in the form of mime or song. After 4 hours of delivering lessons, Year 9 student, Emily said “Our workshop involved Year 7s re- enacting classic fairy tales in the personalities of the characters they had come dressed up as. I found teaching quite exhausting but equally as fun, rewarding and inspiring.” Robin added ‘I’ve enjoyed World Book Day but I’ve learned that teaching is not as easy as it looks!’ Lead teacher, Hannah Taylor, who was dressed as the Cheshire Cat The fantastic team of Year 9 teachers and media students with lead teacher, said ‘Thank you to Year 9 for the Miss H Taylor. They all worked so hard all day! RICHARD LANDERRICHARD SCHOOL LANDER WEEKLY SCHOOL BULLETIN BULLETIN : 17th :May 10th 2013 March 3 2017 3 excellent workshops and to all the students for the effort they have made with their fantastic costumes, I am actually smiling from ear to ear, it’s not just my make up! I hope everyone had an amazing day.’ The day finished with a fantastic performance by The Story Republic. Year 7 student, Aisling Cook, recently won the Gold Award in the Cornwall Young Author competition and her winning story; ‘Rescuing Dennis’, was brought to life along with other winning entries by actors Connie Crosby and Keith Sparrow. Aisling was presented with an anthology which includes her own story along with a signed copy of head judge and author, Liz Kessler’s, book. Other Richard Lander School students who made the long list and have also had their work published in the anthology are Tilly Green, Willow Jeffery, Zita Hinshelwood and Jess Brotherton. Well done to you all! A team of Year 9 media leaders took photos all day and made a short film about World Book day which was shown on the day and will be uploaded to the school website soon Photos: 1. RICHARD LANDERRICHARD SCHOOL LANDER WEEKLY SCHOOL BULLETIN BULLETIN : 17th :May 10th 2013 March 4 2017 4 Year 9 students enjoy creative writing with author Lisa Glass for World Book Day (continued from page 3) T he following day, Thursday 2nd March, the Year 9 students who had worked so hard on World Book Day were lucky enough to attend a thought provoking English writing workshop, run by the well -known author Lisa Glass. Lisa Glass is the author of the Blue trilogy of teen novels, published by Quercus Children's Books. Lisa is also co- administrator and book reviewer at literary website Vulpes Libris. Madeleine and Emily said ‘Everyone entered the classroom and on every desk there were lots of different objects which we were told to use to: create a plot and describe and create a backstory. By the end of the workshop we were all inspired to continue with our stories and with the explanation of how to get our stories published; we are motivated to keep writing in order to see our work in print one day.’ RICHARD LANDERRICHARD SCHOOL LANDER WEEKLY SCHOOL BULLETIN BULLETIN : 17th :May 10th 2013 March 5 2017 5 Year 8 Employability Workshop with Richard Lander Alumni teaches students ‘don’t be afraid to fail.’ by Molly and Leah T oday, a large selection of Year 8 students were chosen to take part in a workplace inspired activity. The workshop focused on different skills and mind sets that are essential when in a working environment. We met seven former students from Richard Lander and discussed their journey from education to educating. During the event, we parted to 5-7 smaller groups; there we analysed different scenarios, and how to respond to them. Jess, a ex- student, musician and sound engineer told us that he had finally found his passion for being a company director, and shared an unforgettable memory of his; finding a positive outcome in this scenario, seemed impossible... He was drilling holes in a wall (In order to build in speakers), in the process of doing this he burst a water pipe… which trailed to a wine cellar! As if it were a cartoon, he had stuck his finger in the hole to prevent anymore leaking. Thankfully, it worked, however he had to stay there until his client considering that his costumer is standing tower from straws and found him, after 10 minutes. His fond of him now and is a regular tape in only 2 minutes. This final customer was mortified and was customer. One of his best quotes task tested our team work skills, fuming with rage, Jess stayed calm (in our opinion) is “don’t be afraid patience and quick thinking.. and collected, instructing him to do to fail” as it applies to everything the following: “you can kill me and applauds taking risks. • Richard Lander School Admissions Policy
Richard Lander School Admissions Policy Richard Lander School follows the Local Authority Admissions Policy and, along with all other LA schools in Cornwall, places on transfer from primary school are allocated by the County team who follow the agreed Common Admissions Policy. The policy complies with the School Admissions Code 2014, the School Admission Regulations 2008, the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, the Education Act 1996 and CornwaII Council’s Fair Access Protocol and offers admission to students irrespective of social, racial or religious considerations. The Governing Body, however, reserves the right to consider each applicant individually. This applies particularly to any student who has been permanently excluded from another school, both within this Local Authority and within any other. Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs that names Richard Lander School will be admitted to the School, regardless of the number on roll in the year group. The school will participate fully in the Cornwall Local Authority’s Fair Access Protocol (See Appendix 1). Children in Care who are directed to the school by the Local Authority will be admitted to the school, regardless of the number on roll in the year group. Our ‘published admission number’ is 270 students in years 7-11. These figures relate to the 2015–16 academic year. It is essential that parents realise that there is always a high demand for places at Richard Lander, consequently once the school year has commenced, the preference for specific subjects in Years 10 and 11 cannot always be met. All applications for school places at Richard Lander School must be made to Cornwall Local Authority.

3rd March 2017 STANDING OUT THE MAGAZINE FOR MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY Cover: Dry Ice 18th January 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Be empathetic and the world will be a better place because of you! Last year we launched our ‘MBA Way’ which everyone has embraced and which is now starting to show some amazing results. In conjunction with our High Performance Learning and commitment to Global Goals, they are now all embedded in our school life and providing the focus for our learning. “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” Alfred Adler This week in our Crew Meetings we have been looking at the way in which we celebrate our students excelling in their work or behaviour. They also gave their views on how they could be rewarded with a system to replace the Vivo system we have used in the past. After half term we will be introducing the MBA passport, a new way to record our excellent work and celebrate the success that this can bring. Students will be able to receive credits from staff and tutors that can be converted to points and exchanged in the school shop for prizes. My colleagues have also been working hard planning for our forthcoming Project Week and I am pleased to GLOBAL CHAMPION say that up to 30 students will be working with Miss Wheeler to reinstate our poly tunnel into the new community GrowSpace. In keeping with our policy to re-use and recycle as much as we can, we have appealed to the local community for any surplus compost, pots and tools which we will be using to grow food for a number of local groups including the Street Food Project Penzance.

ACADEMY NEWS 4th March 2016 E X P L O R E Blue House Win World Book Day Quiz! QR to view on the web BE YOUR BEST Principal’s Report I am delighted to let parents know that the Academy continues to go from strength to strength with excellent student numbers for the new Year 7 in September. As all schools are funded on pupil numbers, it is vital to ensure that we continue to be one of the most popular choice schools in Cornwall and 2016 is no exception. It allows us to continue offering a truly outstanding curriculum provision and extra-curricular programme with excellence in all areas including the arts and sport. This week we have been visited by some experienced executive headteachers from across the country and they were really impressed with the calm, orderly, rigorous and very happy learning environment. A particular area that impressed our guests was the personalised range of support offered by our Student Services team, including Compass Careers and Lifeskills sessions, counselling and study support. This confirms that Mounts Bay Academy continues to be an outstanding school not just in terms of exam results but learning culture and relationships as well. Finally, Penzance will be hosting this year’s Cornwall School Games. Mounts Bay Academy, Humphry Davy School, Penzance Tennis Club, Penzance Leisure Centre, Carn Brea Athletics Club and the Mennaye will be welcoming schools from all over Cornwall competing in a variety of sports from golf to netball, table tennis to dance. It will be an honour to allow the youth from across Cornwall to see how beautiful west Cornwall is and how many wonderful sporting venues Penzance has for a relatively small town.
