Students find teaching ‘not as easy as it looks’ on World Book Day Year 7 Best WBD Costume winners: Prizes were awarded for Best animal costume, Best horror costume, Most Creative etc. O n Wednesday 1st March, Richard Lander School celebrated World Book Day with role reversal and creative costumes when all of Year 7 came into school dressed as storybook characters to participate in workshops which were delivered by their Year 9 peers. Students were invited to come up with prequels or sequels to fairy tales, to develop characters inspired by random objects, to take part in a World Book Day quiz or to portray well-known tales in the form of mime or song. After 4 hours of delivering lessons, Year 9 student, Emily said “Our workshop involved Year 7s re- enacting classic fairy tales in the personalities of the characters they had come dressed up as. I found teaching quite exhausting but equally as fun, rewarding and inspiring.” Robin added ‘I’ve enjoyed World Book Day but I’ve learned that teaching is not as easy as it looks!’

Lead teacher, Hannah Taylor, who was dressed as the Cheshire Cat The fantastic team of Year 9 teachers and media students with lead teacher, said ‘Thank you to Year 9 for the Miss H Taylor. They all worked so hard all day!

I hope everyone had an amazing day.’

The day finished with a fantastic performance by The Story Republic. Year 7 student, Aisling Cook, recently won the Gold Award in the Cornwall Young Author competition and her winning story; ‘Rescuing Dennis’, was brought to life along with other winning entries by actors Connie Crosby and Keith Sparrow. Aisling was presented with an anthology which includes her own story along with a signed copy of head judge and author, Liz Kessler’s, book. Other Richard Lander School students who made the long list and have also had their work published in the anthology are Tilly Green, Willow Jeffery, Zita Hinshelwood and Jess Brotherton. Well done to you all! A team of Year 9 media leaders took photos all day and made a short film about World Book day which was shown on the day and will be uploaded to the school website soon

Year 9 students enjoy creative writing with author Lisa Glass for World Book Day

(continued from page 3)

T he following day, Thursday 2nd March, the Year 9 students who had worked so hard on World Book Day were lucky enough to attend a thought provoking English writing workshop, run by the well -known author Lisa Glass. Lisa Glass is the author of the Blue trilogy of teen novels, published by Quercus Children's Books. Lisa is also co- administrator and book reviewer at literary website Vulpes Libris. Madeleine and Emily said ‘Everyone entered the classroom and on every desk there were lots of different objects which we were told to use to: create a plot and describe and create a backstory. By the end of the workshop we were all inspired to continue with our stories and with the explanation of how to get our stories published; we are motivated to keep writing in order to see our work in print one day.’

Year 8 Employability Workshop with Richard Lander Alumni teaches students ‘don’t be afraid to fail.’ by Molly and Leah

T oday, a large selection of Year 8 students were chosen to take part in a workplace inspired activity. The workshop focused on different skills and mind sets that are essential when in a working environment. We met seven former students from Richard Lander and discussed their journey from education to educating. During the event, we parted to 5-7 smaller groups; there we analysed different scenarios, and how to respond to them. Jess, a ex- student, musician and sound engineer told us that he had finally found his passion for being a company director, and shared an unforgettable memory of his; finding a positive outcome in this scenario, seemed impossible... He was drilling holes in a wall (In order to build in speakers), in the process of doing this he burst a water pipe… which trailed to a wine cellar! As if it were a cartoon, he had stuck his finger in the hole to prevent anymore leaking. Thankfully, it worked, however he had to stay there until his client considering that his costumer is standing tower from straws and found him, after 10 minutes. His fond of him now and is a regular tape in only 2 minutes. This final customer was mortified and was customer. One of his best quotes task tested our team work skills, fuming with rage, Jess stayed calm (in our opinion) is “don’t be afraid patience and quick thinking.. and collected, instructing him to do to fail” as it applies to everything the following: “you can kill me and applauds taking risks. Digital Installation and Printmaking Workshop at The Roseland - Combined

Truro Schools Project

O n 9th February, 4 lucky Year 8 students who had been specially selected went on a mini bus with the DT and Art technicians for a creative day hosted by . It was interesting to see the facilities in another school and meet with students from other Truro schools, and we were made very welcome by the teachers and technicians. They split us into two groups, so the 2 Richard Lander girls stayed with Mrs McGregor in the Art Room and spent the morning learning Printmaking, while the 2 boys went with Mr McGregor to learn Digital Design in preparation for a laser-cutting project. In the afternoon, the groups swapped over so each student got to experience both projects.

In the print making workshop we were taught to make interesting, colourful, multi layered backgrounds that we could then over-print with ‘wood cut’ printing plates. These wooden plates had been pre-prepared by the Roseland staff, by laser etching photos of Cornish natural landmarks onto flat pieces of wood, which could then be inked up liked a lino-print. All the students in the group produced a lovely array of prints, which we were then invited to work into with collage, and at the end of the session everyone had to select their best piece which will be exhibited.

The digital design workshop was a lesson on the computers using 2D software. We were taught step by step how to turn a photo of Cornwall into a line drawing that the laser cutter could understand, which was then scaled to the size a sheet of coloured Perspex, and had areas which would be cut out and interchanged with different colour Perspex. It was a lot to learn and keep up with, but everyone worked well and ended up with an individual design ready to send to the laser cutter, and we will see our work assembled into an installation at the Lander Gallery, opening at 6pm on Thursday March 9th.

Young people work in diverse teams of twelve to fifteen, building skills for work and life, taking on exciting challenges, making new friends, and contributing to their community. The programme runs outside term time, with young people taking part in the summer holidays. Government funding means you pay no more than £50 to take part. This covers food, transport, activities and accommodation during the programme, bursaries are available for young people unable to meet the cost.

County Champion Year 8 Hockey Boys!

C ongratulations to the Year 8 boys hockey team who became County Champions on Thursday in a tournament which was hosted by and featured 11 teams in total. In the group stages victories were achieved against Bodmin, Cape Cornwall, Truro School and a Penair B team alongside a draw against Liskeard School. This gave the team a first place position; lining up a semi final against the other group runners up, local rivals Penair School. Two early goals made this another comfortable victory with a late consolation for Penair being the only goal the team conceded all day. The opponents in the final were Liskeard but there was only going to be one winner with the RLS team finishing 2 - nil winners. A great day of hockey from our team and credit must go to the 9 boys in this team in addition to our B team who also took part. The winning team consisted of; Ethan Allen, Ben Bradley, Mack Roberts, Jamie Ware, Ben West, Jack Dunstan, Arron Sayers, Alex Benson and Ollie Paterson. Mr N Stoddard Head of PE
