Members of Kehillat Kernow recently visited to see Max Frisch’s play ‘Andorra’ performed by members of the Sixth Form under the direction of Louise Garcia. The play shows how underlying prejudice can exist in an ostensibly tolerant society; how the growth of the individual can be harmed as he is forced into a role imposed by the stereotyped attitudes of those around him; how seemingly harmless events can, in time, lead to injustice and tragedy. As it is not found in the original Jewish sources – the Bible or the Talmud – it does not qualify for the usual blessing for Shabbat, festival or Hannukah candles which goes “asher kiddishanoo b’mitzvotav” (“Who has sanctified us by His commandments”). However, although there is no obligation to say anything on lighting the yartzeit candle, it may be appropriate to spend a moment in silence thinking about the person in whose memory it is lit. Moreover, if it is lit with other people present, then it would be fitting to mention some appropriate anecdotes about the person. You may also wish to visit shul the week prior to yartzeit, so that you can be present to ensure that their name is mentioned before the kaddish/memorial prayer.
