In any gathering of Vintagents and Novices, pride of place must inevitably go to that Grand Old Man of H illclim bing, Basil Davenport, not that Basil w ill thank us for the “old” as he subscribes to the theory that a man is as young as he feels. None the less, the sight of this sprightly competitor tooling his 1922 G.N. Spider up the hill in a time which puts many modern motor cars to shame can not disguise the fact that it is some 47 years since Basil first leapt into prominence as a H ill Climb protagonists and that he has been roaring rapidly up acclivities ever since.

Unlike the modern cigar shaped contrivances where the only way to tell one driver from another is by the colour of his crash hat, Basil’s G.N. is sat upon rather than in, a position which facilitates observation of the piston like movements of his arms as he aims the wildly oversteering contraption furiously, and approximately in the direction of the top of the hill. Basil Davenport — Nearly seventy years young and still going strong. Sharing the large Vintage racing car class w ith Spider Photo hy John Newton is another famous old Shelsley car, Tony Brook’s Vauxhall V illiers Supercharge which in the hands of better known in the immediate pre-war period when Raymond Mays used regularly to take the Shelsley Cummins wrapped it round one of the trees on the record in the late twenties. Some of our regular competitors do not take kindly to not being eligible for the Novices’ event and get into the act by borrov/ing vintage machinery from their friends. One such type is Gordon Chippindale who w ill be found in Class ‘A ’ driving David Winstanley’s splendid little Brooklands Riley. Surely one of the classic versions of “ The Englishman's Sports Car” . Gordon is. of course, more usually seen thrashing up in his hardly used Cortina G.T. This afternoon we expect he will be cocking an ear more closely for expensive noises from the engine than he does normally. W hat does one say to a friend having-over-revved his m m m pride and joy ? Frank Sou'den in the majestic 8 litre Bentley on Quarry Corner, Picture hy Viki Lincoln.

distaff side is well slanted towards Huddersfield and district as two more of our Lady conductors hail from that direction, Jackie Eastwood from Honley and Eileen Howarth from just over the hill in Greenfield. Our other Lady driver, and the only bachelor bird, is Josie Lee who although domiciled in the Leeds area orginally springs from Skelmanthorpe to complete a Huddersfield hand full of Aces and Queens.

Josephine is more often seen in the Paddock where she marshals in a most efficient manner and today’s outing in her M.G. B represents a definite speed event debut, unlike most of her rivals for the Ladies award which, to be fair, is awarded on a “figure of merit” basis to equate different types of car.

Moving back to the Novice section, one name that sits a little queerly here on first glance is Jack Brett TH E B A R € ? who w ill be at the wheel of John A lle rto n ’s Viva G.T. in Class Two. Jack w ill be best remembered from the fifties when he was a member of the all triumphant works Norton motor cycle racing team and uncrowned king of Olivers Mount. Despite his fame and prowess. Jack is a relative newcomer to four wheeled motor sport and by our rules still counts as a novice today. FULL DETAILS
