    Forty years on, one-litre F3 screamers return to Monaco Four decades - less one week, but who’s counting? – after its last appearance as a contemporary class, one-litre Formula 3 made a triumphant return to the streets of Monaco, where it proved one of the highlights the ACM’s 7th Grand Prix Historique extravaganza on May 1/2. Tony Trimmer, who won the fi nal F1 support race of the era in 1970, in a Race Cars International-entered Brabham BT28, was there to witness the action, as was three-time World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who won the fi rst (six years earlier to the day) in 1964, driving one of Ken Tyrrell’s Cooper-BMC T72s. While Stewart dominated, leaving Silvio Moser (Brabham-BMC BT6) and Mauro Bianchi (Alpine-Renault) way behind, Trimmer pipped fellow BT28 driver Jean-Pierre Cassegrain by 1.1 seconds, with fellow Britons Bev Bond (Lotus 59), the late Gerry Birrell (BT28) and Richard Scott (Chevron B17) leading the chase as the Ford MAE engine’s heyday drew to a close. This time round, with amateur historic racers rather than up-and-coming pros fi lling the grid, the lead battle was incredibly closely-fought for much of the distance. Switzerland’s Christian Traber (ex-Ian Walker Racing Brabham BT21) may have led all the way, but he had to drive defensively throughout to stave off fi rst Moscow-based Ulsterman Paul A plan for 1970 Monaco F3 winner McMorran (in the unique Crossle 17F originally intended for Birrell) and French class stalwart Francois Tony Trimmer to contest the 2010 Derossi (Chevron B17).

Actually, there were many visitors to the show with the same opinion. The hit of the display appeared to be the 1963 Elite of Frans Nelson. It is absolutely immaculate, but most people were amazed that such a beautiful design could have been created so many years ago. But we had may examples of classic Lotuses: 1959 Lotus 11 of Richard Ruff 1959 Lotus 7a of James McClure 1960 Lotus 18 of Jack and Judy Fitzpatrick 1963 Lotus 7 of Tony Bates 196- 7 chassis of Franklin Rudolph 1963 Lotus 23 of Stan Rinne 1966 Lotus Cortina of Bruce Miller 1966 Lotus 41 of Kiyoshi Hamai 196- Lotus Elan of Kiyoshi Hamai 1972 Lotus Elan of David Anderson 1970 Lotus Europa of Tom Carney 1980 Lotus Esprit of John Zender 1991 Lotus Elan M100 of Mel Boss Many others donated their time, and we want to thank them, along with the above. This was quite a concession for many to take the time and energy to show their car. The length of time and the logistics of Moscone Center made this more of and effort than driving to Holiday Dinner/December Meeting the local concours for the day.     BILL BRACK the “FORMULA YEARS” 1967-1979 By Michael Boyer In 1965 Bill owned SPORTS CARS UNLIMITED in Clarkston where he became the Canadian Distributor for Lotus, while racing the Mini he also was getting involved with Lotus cars. In 1967 his first race with a Lotus came at Mosport in a Lotus 47, a type of Europa with a twin cam engine, car number #85 . Bill won the 3 hr or 100 lap Centennial Sundown G.P. of Mosport in his Lotus 47GT. Bill took the lead from the start but fell back to 3rd when he pitted for fuel, he then roared back to take the win. Note: This type of racing should be seen to be appreciated. To see the cars blasting through the night, with their multi-lighting systems ablaze is quite exciting. (Canada Track & Traffic 1967) During time Bill also raced Lotus 41 and became The Formula B champion. Photo: Bill with his Lotus 47GT Mosport 1967 In early May of 1968 Bill with his Chief Mechanic Doug Crosty returned from England with a brand new Lotus 41C 1600cc to race in the Formula B series, on May 26 Bill came in 2nd place at Le Circuit in Quebec and on June 8th he took first at a race at Harewood Acres. He then went on a U.S. tour with both the Lotus and the Mini. On June 16th Bill started The War Bonnet G.P. at Tulsa Oklahoma in 20th position, he finished 2nd in class and 7th overall, by July he lead the formula series in points, there were already people in the pits talking about Bill being next years Canadian Champion.
