NWAC and DAL filed for Chapter 11 protection yesterday, becoming the 20 and 21st airlines to do so since 2000. Now with 47% of industry capacity in bankruptcy, the playing field looks set to become even more lopsided pressuring non-bankrupt legacies to lower costs further and low cost carriers to reassess their shrinking CASM advantage. *** CAPACITY PULLBACK. Over the past 20 years, bankrupt carriers decreased capacity by 5-10% on avg in the year following their filing. If we assume DAL and NWAC shrink by 7.5% (the midpoint) in '06, our domestic industry ASM forecast goes from +2% y/y to flat, which could potentially be favorable for airline pricing (yields). *** NWAC AND DAL INTIMATE CAPACITY RESTRAINT. After their filing yesterday, NWAC's CEO indicated 4Q:05 capacity could decline 5-6% y/y, while Delta announced plans to accelerate its fleet simplification plan, removing four aircraft types by the end of 2006. *** BIGGEST BENEFICIARIES LIKELY TO BE LOW COST CARRIERS. NWAC and DAL account for roughly 26% of domestic capacity, which, if trimmed by 7.5% equates to a 2% pt reduction in industry capacity. We believe LCC-heavy routes are likely to see a disproportionate benefit from potential reductions at DAL and NWAC, with AAI, AWA, and JBLU in particular having an easier path for growth.

    Kentucky Statewide Rail Plan 2015 CHAPTER 2: FREIGHT AND INTERMODAL This chapter defines the Kentucky rail system by describing the major characteristics of each operating freight railroad and details key system‐wide trends and conditions. It also depicts major types and quantities of goods shipped from, to, and through Kentucky, including descriptions of some of the multimodal linkages. Rail transportation is a safe and efficient mode for transporting freight. Figure 2‐1 provides a graphic comparison of cargo carrying capacity by various modes. All modes have advantages and disadvantages in the movement of freight. The choice between modes is often tied to the location, type of commodity, price of shipment, and connections to other modes. The Kentucky rail system, shown in Figure 2‐3, is comprised of 23 railroads (owning, operating, or having trackage rights), including one port railroad and five museum/tourist railroads, three of which operate on private track.

    2 KENTUCKY FREIGHT SYSTEM 2.1 MULTIMODAL FREIGHT SYSTEM An efficient, multimodal freight transportation network is essential to the economic well-being of Kentucky. All modes play a role when moving goods, and the choice between modes is frequently related to the location, type of commodity, price of shipment, and connections to other modes. A comparison of modes, as shown in Figure 2-1 illustrates the cargo carrying capacity by various modes. While modes may vary in terms of capacity, energy, safety, and environmental impacts, each mode serves an important role in the freight delivery system. They must work together to create a connected and resilient freight network. Figure 2-1: Comparison of Cargo Carrying Capacity by Mode Source: Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Freight Modes Book, September 2015, http://transportation.ky.gov/Planning/Documents/2015%20Modes%20Book.pdf In 2015, KYTC was responsible for owning and maintaining nearly 28,000 miles of the Kentucky roadway system, which connects to railroads, ports, airports, and pipelines in the commonwealth. This connectivity plays an integral part in the supply chain; therefore, it is essential that KYTC invest in ongoing maintenance, operational improvements, and capacity adding projects to move freight efficiently and safely. Although KYTC does not have jurisdiction over other modes, the Cabinet acts as a partner and participant with public and private stakeholders to coordinate investment decisions. KYTC views Kentucky’s multimodal freight system discussed in the following chapters and sections is critical and vital KENTUCKY FREIGHT PLAN Page 2-1 Kentucky Freight System to improving the efficient movement of freight of importance to the economy of the State.
