On the one hand, we have seven witnessesto be perfectly exact, we have six and a half pairs of eyes, and one undeniable fact; and on the other we havewhat is it?prejudice, common sense, the inertia of opinion. Never were there seven more honest-seeming witnesses; never was there a more undeniable fact than the inversion of Gottfried Plattners anatomical structure, andnever was there a more preposterous story than the one they have to tell! The most preposterous part of the story is the worthy Gottfrieds contribution (for I count him as one of the seven). -

The Wellsian, 28 (2005) Book Review: John R. Hammond, H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine: A Reference Guide (Westport, CT, and London: Praeger, 2004). xii, 151 pp. ISBN 0-313-33007-7. £54.37 / US $79.95 / €65 (approx.). [By John S. Partington] In H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine: A Reference Guide, John R. Hammond has produced ‘a basic guide that offers an overview of the novel, places it in its literary and biographical context, examines its uses of language and imagery, and summarizes its critical reception’ (x). Hammond is to be applauded for his ability at identifying gaps in the market for new works on Wells. One particularly thinks of his H. G. Wells and the Short Story (1992) and his corrective H. G. Wells and Rebecca West (1991) among several that could be cited. The challenge that this latest volume poses its author, however, is perhaps much greater than in any of his previous works, for in writing a book-length reference guide to just one Wells novel, Hammond is expected to be both extremely accurate in his data and comprehensive in his coverage of the critical field. Given The Time Machine’s 110-year history (or 117 years, if we take ‘The Chronic Argonauts’ [1888] as our datum), the challenge is a great one. In this review, I am going to begin by assessing Hammond’s accuracy in the book, before considering his comprehensiveness and, finally, commenting upon the degree of the guide’s usefulness for readers of The Time Machine. In chapter three of the guide, Hammond claims that ‘It is highly probable that [Wells] had sought unsuccessfully to place The Chronic Argonauts in a commercial publication before submitting it to his old student magazine’ (35). -

eSharp Issue 12: Technology and Humanity Rereading Posthumanism in The War of the Worlds and Independence Day Alistair Brown (Durham University) Science Fiction as the Discovery of the Future In a 1902 presentation to the Royal Institution on ‘The Discovery of the Future,’ H.G. Wells contrasted two types of mind: the legal or submissive type, and the creative or legislative. 1 The former, which predominates in society, is retrospective, fatalistically understanding the present in terms of precedent. The more modern, creative type ‘sees the world as one great workshop, and the present no more than material for the future’ (Wells 1989, p.19) and is implicitly associated with the writer of science fiction (or the scientific romance, as then known). Given our acquaintance with Wells’ descendents like Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke, this seems fairly uncontentious. However, in a climate of postmodern relativism we may be less comfortable with the way in which Wells went on to formalise the relationship between present and future. He compared the creative predictions of the future to those analyses of distant prehistory made by the relatively recent sciences of geology and archaeology, and contended that it ought to be possible to produce a long term portrait of the future as has been done with the ancient ‘inductive past’ (1989, p.27). He was a school teacher, but after an accident that damaged his kidneys, he decided that he would be a writer. His first works were textbooks of biology and geography, but then he moved to fiction and wrote about fifty novels that can be divided into three groups: scientific or fantastic romances in the manner of Jules Verne, comic novels and novels of ideas with a didactic purpose. Among the scientific and fantastic novels we remember: ‘The Time Machine’ (1895), ‘The Island of Dr Moreau’ (1896), ‘The Invisible Man’ (1897) and ‘The War of the Worlds’ (1898). These novels are about the impact of alien races or advanced science on society and have become successful films. H.G. Wells ABOUT THE NOVEL THE CRYSTAL EGG The science fiction short story was written in 1897 and appeared on American television in a series called ‘Tales of Tomorrow’ in 1951. The owner of an old curiosity shop, Charles Cave, has an extremely attractive and mysterious crystal egg that he refuses to sell by asking an absurd price. The man becomes obsessed with the egg and observes it night and day. The crystal reflects light in the middle of the night and Mr Cave notices a foreign land inside the egg. He shares his findings only with his friend Mr Wace, who is a doctor. The two men think that the strange creatures inside are Martians and try to attract their attention. -

There won't be any more blessed concerts for a million years or so; there won't be any Royal Academy of Arts, and no nice little feeds at restaurants. They ain't no further use. Those who mean to escape their catching must get ready. I'm getting ready. I'm going on, under their feet. I've been thinking about the drains. Of course those who don't know drains think horrible things; but under this London are miles and miles--hundreds of miles--and a few days rain and London empty will leave them sweet and clean.
