The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,338 Athletes As at 27 April 2014)
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,338 athletes as at 27 April 2014) No country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-four-minute mile than the USA. Duing the 2014 indoor season in that country 48 athletes broke four minutes and the US total of sub- four-minute milers is now approaching the 450 mark. Elsewhere, even the distant past eventually yields its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later ! There are now 17 sets of brothers, including five sets of twins, and five sets of fathers and sons who have broken four minutes. The most recent contributor to this family tradition is John Coghlan, son of Eamonn Coghlan. No grandfathers and grandsons as yet ! Performances listed in this Register represent the first occasion on which the athlete ran sub-four- minutes for the mile, followed by the all-time personal best if there was a subsequent improvement. Almost 60 per cent of the 1,338 athletes listed have not bettered their first Sub-4 performance, though some of those from the more recent years will obviously do so eventually. Performances listed in tenths-of-a-second were recorded manually; it may be that some of these were also automatically recorded and the figures not made public, but as they mostly date back 30 years or more it is very unlikely that such data will ever come to light. The standard middle- distance event in international competition has for more than a century been the 1500 metres, and but for this there would certainly be twice as many sub-four-minute milers as there actually are. -

Peaks and Valleys: the History of Competitive Distance Running in the U.S
Peaks And Valleys: The History Of Competitive Distance Running In The U.S. Since 1954 Ben Raphelson Grinnell College 1 Introduction I began to run seriously in the summer of 2000 before I entered high school. At the time, I had very little knowledge of the sport beyond my team and the teams we competed against in our conference and state. That fall, attending my first cross-country state meet, I watched Dathan Ritzenhein, a senior and defending high school national champion obliterate the field and win the 5-kilometer race by nearly a minute. 1 The summer of 2001 was my first track season and happened to coincide with Alan Webb breaking Jim Ryun’s high school mile record. These performances came early in my involvement with the sport, and perhaps as a result, I did not truly appreciate their significance. I may have been dimly aware of a disconnect between these stunning high school performances and the woeful state of professional distance running in the United States, but took little notice. As my interest in the sport grew with my involvement in it, I heard romanticized stories about amazing U.S. runners from the past, giants like Jim Ryun and Frank Shorter. Growing up, I was without any such role model on the world- stage. As my academic interests turned towards history at Grinnell College, and my running career continued, I inevitably sought to combine the two. In the fall of 2006, I began discussions of a summer project with my research and academic advisors at Grinnell. My goal, put simply, was to figure out what happened to elite distance running in the United States. -
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,568 Athletes As at 23 April 2019)
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,568 athletes as at 23 April 2019) Within a year of the death of the first sub-four-minute miler, Sir Roger Bannister, at the ago of 88, the total number of athletes who have broken through the once historic barrier is past 1,550. No country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-four-minute mile than the USA. During the 2019 indoor season in that country there were 73 sub-four-minute performances, and the total of US sub-four-minute milers is now over 550. Elsewhere, even the distant past eventually yields its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later! Bulgaria remains something of a mystery because another sub-four minute mile by a Bulgarian in 1992 (no venue or exact date) has only recently been caught up with! There are now 19 sets of brothers, including five sets of twins, and 11 sets of fathers and sons who have broken four minutes. The most recent contributors to this family tradition are Jakob Ingebrigtsen, brother of Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen; John Coghlan, son of Eamonn Coghlan; Johnny Gregorek, son of John Gregorek; Liam Dee, son of Billy Dee: and Jamie Williamson, son of Graham Williamson. The Gregoreks have now replaced Kip and Martin Keino as the most successful father/son miling partnership, based on the average of their best times. The Ingbrigtsens have become the first set of three brothers to break four minutes. -
Sub-4 Register 2021
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1663 athletes as of April 13, 2021) WITHIN A YEAR of the death of the first sub-4:00 miler, Sir Roger Bannister, at the age of 88, the total number of athletes who have broken through the once historic barrier was already past 1550, and no country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-4 mile than the USA. Even during the COVID-ravaged year of ’21 there were 51 men who broke 4:00 indoors, of which 32 were Americans. Outdoors in ’20 there were 33 who enterprisingly did so in Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Switzerland and, of course, the USA. The total of US sub-4 milers is now 594, far ahead of Great Britain’s 215 and Kenya’s 152, with no other country yet nearing 100. The year ’21 has very soon passed another landmark, as Nick Willis, of New Zealand, has broken 4:00 for a record 19th successive year. The previous best of 18 was held by his countryman John Walker, but Steve Scott of the USA, is still the most prolific sub-4 miler in history, with 137 such times to his credit. Elsewhere, even the distant past has eventually yielded its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later! Bulgaria remains something of a mystery because another sub-four minute mile by a Bulgarian in ’92 (no venue or exact date) has only recently been caught up with! The Science of Olympians by David R
The Science of Olympians By David R. Bassett and Scott A. Conger Once every four years, people come together from all nations to marvel at the incredible feats of some of the greatest athletes in the world. What is it that allows them to run, jump, and throw two to three times faster and farther than the average person? Is it good genes, or sheer hard training? Some athletes, like USA cyclist Taylor Phinney, seem to have followed the suggestion of the Swedish physiologist Per Olaf Astrand, who once joked, “If you want to be a champion, then choose your parents wisely.” Phinney’s parents are cycling royalty. His mom, Connie Carpenter-Phinney, won a gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics in the women’s road race. His dad, Davis Phinney, was a bronze medalist in the 1984 Olympics and stage winner in the Tour de France. However, it is not just genes that make an athlete; getting an early start in athletics also seems to benefit future Olympians. A study conducted at the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal found that most of the Olympians surveyed had at least one older sibling. The scientists speculated that trying to keep up with an older brother or sister helped them develop essential motor skills for sport. Many physical traits of Olympians are evident even as they step onto the athletic stage. Athletes in the power events are taller and have bigger muscles and stronger skeletons, while those in the gravity sports are smaller in size with little body fat. But some of the traits that allow these athletes to achieve incredible things are invisible to the naked eye.
