Harris in Chicago Illinois on Feb. 23, 1905. The first meeting was held in Room 711 of the Unity Building. Four prospective members attended that first meeting. From there Rotary spread immediately to San Francisco California, and on November 12, 1908 Club # 2 was chartered. From San Francisco, Homer Woods, the founding President, went on to start clubs in Oakland and in 1909 traveled to southern California and founded the Rotary Club of Los Angeles (LA 5) In 1914, at a fellowship meeting of 6 western Rotary Clubs H. J. Brunnier, Presi- dent of the Rotary Club of San Francisco, awoke in the middle of the night with the concept of Rotary Districts. He summoned a porter to bring him a railroad sched- ule of the United States, which also included a map of the USA, and proceeded to map the location of the 100 Rotary clubs that existed at that time and organized them into 13 districts.

  • Metaphors of Love in 1946–2016 Billboard Year-End Number-One Songs
Text&Talk 2021; 41(4): 469–491 Salvador Climent* and Marta Coll-Florit All you need is love: metaphors of love in 1946–2016 Billboard year-end number-one songs https://doi.org/10.1515/text-2019-0209 Received June 25, 2019; accepted September 19, 2020; published online October 26, 2020 Abstract: This study examines the use of metaphors, metonymies and meta- phorical similes for love in a corpus of 52 year-end number one hit songs in the USA from 1946 to 2016 according to Billboard charts. The analysis is performed within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and from quantitative and quali- tative perspectives. Our findings indicate that the theme of romantic love is prevalent in US mainstream pop music over the course of seven decades but shows evolutionary features. Metaphors of love evolve from conventional to novel with a notable increase in both heartbreak and erotic metaphors. Remarkably, the study finds that the two predominant conceptualizations of love in pop songs – which in a significant number of cases overlap – are the following: experiential, originating in the physical proximity of the lovers, and cultural, reflecting possession by one lover and showing a non-egalitarian type of love. Keywords: Conceptual Metaphor Theory; corpus linguistics; metaphor; pop music; romantic love 1 Introduction The central theme of a large number of pop songs is some facet of romantic love. Starr and Waterman (2003: 105–110, 199–200) noted this to be already the case in the Tin Pan Alley era in the USA of the 1920s and 1930s and the trend continued through the 1940s and 1950s, when the entertainment industry grew exponen- tially: “total annual record sales in the United States rose from $191 million in 1951 to $514 million in 1959” (Starr and Waterman 2003: 252).

  • 1 Pensford Village.Indd
Pensford Village - A leisurely stroll of approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) Walk 1 One of a series of walks in and around Pensford Pensford Local History Group INTRODUCTION This walk meanders and loops through the historic village and is broken down into three sections. The maps and directions are colour-coded. For most visitors, Pensford is simply known for being the first village you get to heading south from Bristol on the A37. In fact, the A37 dissects the village leaving intact much of its medieval street layout. The origins of the name Pensford are debatable but the earliest version is Pendlesford which may be Anglo-Saxon or Celtic. Unlike the nearby hamlet of Belluton, there is no reference to Pensford in the Domesday Book and its early development is probably due to the fact it provided a crossing over the River Chew on the main route between Bristol, Wells and the South Coast. Its importance grew with the medieval wool and textile trades, by harnessing the power of the River Chew. In the late-C14, Somerset was the largest producer of woollen cloth (the country’s most important export) and the largest cloth market in Somerset was in Pensford. The evidence of later industries, particularly coal, mills and the railways, is perhaps more visible in today’s landscape. For John Locke, the philosopher, Pensford and Belluton were his home. He spent his early life here until the age of about 15. He was a protégé of Alexander Popham who owned the Hunstrete Estate (known locally as the Popham Estate) which included Publow.

  • The Lost World of 1962 Transcript
The Lost World of 1962 Transcript Date: Thursday, 5 July 2012 - 6:00PM Location: Barnard's Inn Hall 5 July 2012 The Lost World of 1962 Dominic Sandbrook Imagine that, whether through science or magic, you woke up this morning and found yourself mysteriously catapulted back in time by fifty years. It is not 5 July 2012, but 5 July 1962, then as now a Thursday, but an unusually cold and rainy day. Perhaps, to get your bearings, you pick up a daily paper – the Times, let’s say. You look at the headlines on the front page and you blink with surprise, because of course there aren’t any. The first column reads ‘Births’, and your eye scans the list of solid and sensible names: Roger Alford, Bridget Evans, Peter Green, Rachel Morgan, Robin Reeves. Under Marriages, it turns out that Arthur Montague and Mary Allen of Fort Road, Guildford are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary, 25 years after they were married in 1937 in the university chapel at Glasgow. Under the headings Deaths follows a long line of septuagenarians and octogenarians, people who were born in the reign of Queen Victoria, lived through the reigns of her son, grandson and great-grand daughter, and saw two world wars, the high point and decline of the British Empire, and the advent of the cinema, television, air travel and even the space race – something that makes you realise that today’s Britons are not the only generation to have experienced extraordinary change. On the second page you find the Appointments and – a telling word – Situations.
