Harris in Chicago Illinois on Feb. 23, 1905. The first meeting was held in Room 711 of the Unity Building. Four prospective members attended that first meeting. From there Rotary spread immediately to San Francisco California, and on November 12, 1908 Club # 2 was chartered. From San Francisco, Homer Woods, the founding President, went on to start clubs in Oakland and in 1909 traveled to southern California and founded the Rotary Club of Los Angeles (LA 5) In 1914, at a fellowship meeting of 6 western Rotary Clubs H. J. Brunnier, Presi- dent of the Rotary Club of San Francisco, awoke in the middle of the night with the concept of Rotary Districts. He summoned a porter to bring him a railroad sched- ule of the United States, which also included a map of the USA, and proceeded to map the location of the 100 Rotary clubs that existed at that time and organized them into 13 districts.

    Vladimir Vysotskij e le sue canzoni: note sulla ricezione italiana Carlo Bianchi Independent Scholar [email protected] Abstract (English) From the beginning of the sixties to the end of the seventies, the singer-songwriter, poet and actor Vladimir Vysotsky (1938-1980) embodied an archetypical Soviet Russian dissident: while ostracized by the Brezhnev regime, he was very popular and beloved by Russian people, to whom he was known for his prolific concert activity and career as a stage and film actor. After the fall of the USSR, his life and work were the subject of a growing body of studies, with publications of texts and new multimedia offerings from both the Russian community (as an emblematic example, the V.S. Vysotsky State Cultural Centre and Museum, founded in Moscow during the early ‘90s) and at the international level. This article will investigate Vysotsky’s poetics in relation to Soviet society of his time, within an Italian context. In doing so, it will review the reception of Vysotsky’s work in Italian academic, journalistic and musical sources, and explore the bibliography, discography and audio and video offerings, such as a television documentary by Demetrio Volcic (1979-1982), utilizing historical-critical evidence to understand Vysotsky’s work in relation to an Italian frame of reception.     MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me​ is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

    Text&Talk 2021; 41(4): 469–491 Salvador Climent* and Marta Coll-Florit All you need is love: metaphors of love in 1946–2016 Billboard year-end number-one songs https://doi.org/10.1515/text-2019-0209 Received June 25, 2019; accepted September 19, 2020; published online October 26, 2020 Abstract: This study examines the use of metaphors, metonymies and meta- phorical similes for love in a corpus of 52 year-end number one hit songs in the USA from 1946 to 2016 according to Billboard charts. The analysis is performed within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and from quantitative and quali- tative perspectives. Our findings indicate that the theme of romantic love is prevalent in US mainstream pop music over the course of seven decades but shows evolutionary features. Metaphors of love evolve from conventional to novel with a notable increase in both heartbreak and erotic metaphors. Remarkably, the study finds that the two predominant conceptualizations of love in pop songs – which in a significant number of cases overlap – are the following: experiential, originating in the physical proximity of the lovers, and cultural, reflecting possession by one lover and showing a non-egalitarian type of love. Starr and Waterman (2003: 105–110, 199–200) noted this to be already the case in the Tin Pan Alley era in the USA of the 1920s and 1930s and the trend continued through the 1940s and 1950s, when the entertainment industry grew exponen- tially: “total annual record sales in the United States rose from $191 million in 1951 to $514 million in 1959” (Starr and Waterman 2003: 252).
