Research on Esperanto is hampered because knowledge of the subject is often regarded, ipso facto, as evidence of a lack of objectivity, and also because Esperanto, as largely an L2, is elusive, and its speakers hard to quantify. The problem is compounded by the rapid shift in its community from membership-based organizations to decentralized, informal web-based communication. Also shifting are the community’s ideological underpinnings: it began as a response to lack of communication across languages but is now often perceived by its users as an alternative, more equitable means of communication than the increasingly ubiquitous English. Underlying these changes is a flourishing cultural base, including an extensive literature and periodical press. There is a need for more research – linguistic, sociolinguistic, and in the history of ideas. In intellectual history, Esperanto and related ideas have played a larger role than is generally recognized, intersecting with, and influencing, such movements as modernization in Japan, the development of international organizations, socialism in many parts of the world, and, in our own day, machine translation. The Esperanto movement emerged in the global arena in the late nineteenth century as a response to inequalities in the nation-state field. In the course of several decades, the movement established a new global field based on the logic of equal communication through Esperanto and on the accumulation of cultural capital. While the field gained autonomy from the nation-state field, it has not been recognized as its equal. Persons endowed with cultural capital but lacking political and economic capital have been particularly drawn to Esperanto. Ironically, while attempting to overcome established unfair distinctions based on differential accumulation of political and economic capital, the Esperanto movement creates and maintains new distinctions and inequalities based on cultural capital accumulation. Ana Velitchkova At the regional level, the Esperanto movement became prominent in state- socialist Eastern Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. The movement found unexpected allies among independent states in the Eastern European periphery. -

The Esperantist Background of René De Saussure's Work
Chapter 1 The Esperantist background of René de Saussure’s work Marc van Oostendorp Radboud University and The Meertens Institute ené de Saussure was arguably more an esperantist than a linguist – R somebody who was primarily inspired by his enthusiasm for the language of L. L. Zamenhof, and the hope he thought it presented for the world. His in- terest in general linguistics seems to have stemmed from his wish to show that the structure of Esperanto was better than that of its competitors, and thatit reflected the ways languages work in general. Saussure became involved in the Esperanto movement around 1906, appar- ently because his brother Ferdinand had asked him to participate in an inter- national Esperanto conference in Geneva; Ferdinand himself did not want to go because he did not want to become “compromised” (Künzli 2001). René be- came heavily involved in the movement, as an editor of the Internacia Scienca Re- vuo (International Science Review) and the national journal Svisa Espero (Swiss Hope), as well as a member of the Akademio de Esperanto, the Academy of Es- peranto that was and is responsible for the protection of the norms of the lan- guage. Among historians of the Esperanto movement, he is also still known as the inventor of the spesmilo, which was supposed to become an international currency among Esperantists (Garvía 2015). At the time, the interest in issues of artificial language solutions to perceived problems in international communication was more widespread in scholarly cir- cles than it is today. Interlinguistics and Esperanto studies Paths to the scholarly literature Detlev Blanke Humboldt University Berlin A significant number of publications on interlinguistics and Esperanto studies would be improved if their authors had a more thorough knowledge of the significant scholarly literature. However, it is often difficult even for the specialist to find his or her way among current and older scholarly studies dealing with various aspects of planned languages ([“artificial”] world [auxiliary] languages). The current study is intended to facilitate access to the scholarly literature by drawing the reader’s attention to the myriad sources of material worthy of use by the researcher. Particularly included, in addition to monographs, are such sources as anthologies, Festschriften, conference proceedings, university dissertations, and planned-language periodicals both current and older. Especially valuable for up-to-date information are general and specialized interlinguistics bibliographies, bibliographically oriented bulletins, and periodically published international bibliographies with sections on interlinguistics. Yielding most information is the bibliography on modern languages and literatures published by the Modern Language Association (MLA) in New York, which registers the newest materials annually. Specialized libraries, more and more easily consulted on-line, provide large quantities of materials worthy of research. The Internet is playing a growing role in making literature in the field available. Scholarly literature in interlinguistics and Esperanto studies is steadily growing. Finding one’s way around it is increasingly difficult even for experienced researchers, especially if the goal is a literature search on specific problems. For those new to the field, the situation is particularly complicated if the goal is to produce something original. -

ABSTRACT To our knowledge, there is to date no significant number of sociological studies dealing with the Esperanto movement, and there are even fewer sociolinguistic explorations of the whole Esperanto phenomenon. Concentrating on the Croatian Esperanto movement, we conducted an extensive study of Croatian Esperantistsʼ attitudes towards the structure of Esperanto, and their perception of the Esperanto movement and the overall Esperanto phenomenon – aspects still conspicuously missing in recent Esperantological research. INTRODUCTION More than 125 years have passed since Dr Ludwig Zamenhof ʻcrossed the Rubiconʼ and published the first grammar of Esperanto. ʻDoktoro Esperanto,ʼ as he signed himself anonymously when his long developed project was finally published in Warsaw on July 26, 1887, proposed to offer a cure for the treatment of international misunderstanding that had been a tangible problem since the Tower of Babelʼs confusion of tongues. However, as is widely known, Dr Zamenhofʼs invention ultimately did not succeed in bridging the international communication chasm and solving the perennial problem of confusio linguarum. -

Esperanto and the ideology of constructed languages 6/11/08 4:00 PM Enkomputiligis Don HARLOW Esperanto and the ideology of constructed languages By Donald Broadribb from International Language Reporter, 2nd Quarter 1970, pp. 1-9 Donald Broadribb, Ph.D., teaches comparative religion at the Univ. of Melbourne; his field of reseorch is early mythology. Currently he is on sabbatical in Switzerland. Surprisingly little has been done in the way of study of the motivations of the makers of constructed languages, or of the Weltanschauung implied by the structure of the languages constructed. There are some exceptions, of course. For example, the Ido-reform embodies an explicit anti-abstractionist principle in its word- construction, tracing back to the philosophical system of one of its founders. This took an essentially Aristotelian view that abstractions exist only as manifested in individual, concrete objects, as opposed to what was taken to be Zamenhof's basically Platonic system. Thus, where Esperanto forms from the adjectival root bel the abstract noun belo (beauty), in Ido the noun formation belo must signify a beautiful thing. The closest to an abstraction that can be made in Ido is beleso, which literally means beautiful existence (the root es corresponding to the Esperanto verbal root est but also replacing the Esperanto abstraction- forming morpheme ec). Esperanto As a Family Language

Esperanto was created to serve as a common second language in the world, but its present role as a vehicular language is confined to a rather small number of speakers who use it in their personal contacts and cultural activities, but seldom in their trades and professions. They form a kind of diasporic speech community with certain shared cultural values and symbols, original literature unknown outside the community, and frequent personal contacts at various meetings and on the Internet. Esperanto has also been used as a family language for about one hundred years, and there are perhaps one thousand first-language speakers. The paper presents an overview of the little-studied field of Esperanto as a native and family language and points out some methodological and factual problems in the few published studies. The major pitfalls of the study of native Esperanto are identified as follows: (i) concentrating on mixed marriages only; (ii) confusing the Esperanto speech community with the Esperanto movement; (iii) not knowing the language sufficiently; (iv) ignoring the subjects’ linguistic background, and (v) expecting a priori nativisation to bring about changes in the language. 1. I It is not uncommon that a vehicular language comes to be used as an everyday language in some families, even though it is native to neither parent. Besides such better-known examples as English, French or Russian, Esperanto presents a linguistically interesting case of such a language. -
Sense of Belonging and Connectedness in the Online Esperanto Communities
SENSE OF BELONGING AND CONNECTEDNESS IN THE ONLINE ESPERANTO COMMUNITIES Iliyana Parashkevova Media and Communications Studies (One-year Master) 15 Credits Spring 2018 Supervisor: Ilkin Mehrabov Page 1 of 66 Abstract The thesis is focused on researching the recent phenomena of the emerging virtual Esperanto communities. The aim is to understand how feeling of belonging and connectedness are generated online. The theoretical framework that the study follows is Sense of Community theory by McMillan and Chavis (1986). It presents 4 components that combined together create a strong bond within a community – membership, influence, shared emotional value, and reinforcement of needs, later revised to spirit, trust, art and trade respectively. This particular theory helped significantly structure the way the analysis was carried out. The main results from the qualitative and quantitative data are that the sense of connectedness the respondents demonstrated to the Esperanto communities was strong. The interview participants have been members for more than 10 years, and have indicated they believed they shared similar values and needs with their co-members, but most strong ones with the groups they shared other interests except Esperanto. The Internet, as all interview participants confirmed, has played a huge role for the development of the Esperanto language and culture and currently connects thousands of Esperantists worldwide and provides them with a space to be producers of their media, Esperanto. Furthermore, some statements demonstrated that not speaking the language results in excluding people from the group, excluding also new members who used auxiliary languages (e.g. English or German) along with Esperanto, to help their communication at Esperanto gatherings.
