Current biogeographic understanding, however, is limited by the lack of modern genetic samples for comparative analyses from most of these islands, and conservation efforts are hampered by the paucity of recent information from small islands peripheral to major, more commonly visited islands. In November and December 2016, we visited Maratua, an oceanic coral atoll 50 km east of Borneo, and Bawean, a volcanic island on the Sunda continental shelf 150 km north of Java, to survey birds and collect specimens for morphological and genetic analysis. We detected many of the birds on Maratua’s historical lists and added several new resident and migratory species. Notably, we did not detect the Maratua White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus barbouri). On Bawean, we found the forests to be nearly silent and detected remarkably few resident land-bird species overall. The severe population reduction of C. m. barbouri on Maratua and the drastic reduction of forest birds on Bawean probably result from overexploitation by the cage-bird trade in the first case and a combination of the cage-bird trade and pellet-gun hunting in the second. -

Phylogenetic signal was highly congruent and complementary between mtDNA and nuclear genes. In addition to single-nucleotide variation, shared deletions in nuclear introns supported one basal and two peripheral clades within the Aquilini. Monophyly of the Aquilini relative to other birds of prey was confirmed. However, all polytypic genera within the tribe, Spizaetus, Aquila, Hieraaetus, turned out to be non-monophyletic. Old World Spizaetus and Stephanoaetus together appear to be the sister group of the rest of the Aquilini. Spiza- stur melanoleucus and Oroaetus isidori axe nested among the New World Spizaetus species and should be merged with that genus. The Old World 'Spizaetus' species should be assigned to the genus Nisaetus (Hodgson, 1836). The sister species of the two spotted eagles (Aquila clanga and Aquila pomarina) is the African Long-crested Eagle (Lophaetus occipitalis). -

CAMBODIA and VIETNAM Birds
Best of Vietnam & Cambodia 6th to 24th March 2017 (19 days) Central Vietnam Extension 24th to 31st March 2017 (8 days) Bar-bellied Pitta by Suppalak Klabdee After being isolated from the birding and travelling world for so long, these two countries have become key destinations on the world birding travel map. Cambodia has emerged as one of South-east Asia’s finest birding and cultural destinations and here we look for the globally threatened Bengal Florican and Giant and White-shouldered Ibises. At the famous Prek Toal water-bird colony, on Tonle Sap Lake (the largest lake in the region), we hope to find Greater and Lesser Adjutants, Black-headed Ibis and both Milky and Painted Storks. Finally, we also devote some time in the country’s capital to search for RBT Cambodia and Vietnam & Extension Itinerary 2 the newly described Cambodian Tailorbird, amazingly only discovered in 2009 right in the capital itself! In Vietnam, we concentrate on the endemic bird areas in the south, and will visit Nam Cat Tien National Park and Da Lat area, with its host of South Vietnamese endemics! A long list of avian highlights includes the likes of Germain’s Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl, Vietnamese Greenfinch, Black-headed Parrotbill, Grey-crowned Crocias, Black-hooded, White-cheeked and Orange-breasted Laughingthrushes and Bar-bellied Pitta. Now that peace reigns over these once troubled lands, we invite those with a taste for the exotic to explore these two fantastic countries with us. Bali Myna Bali Myna (Starling) by Dennis Braddy Tour Summary… This short but extremely productive and varied tour, covering a fine selection of hand-picked “top birding sites and destinations” throughout Western Indonesia was an immense success, once again and was an absolute joy to lead due to our enthusiastic, fun and very good-natured group. Our quick-fire, two-week tour of western Indonesia, kicked off in Denpasar, on the island of Bali where we all met up at the Harris Hotel for an introductory dinner and flight the following morning to the island of Flores, situated in Nusa Tenggara (The Lesser Sundas), a chain of islands running mostly east/west to the east of Wallace’s line, therefore having a distinctly Australasian flair about their avifauna. After arriving in the large, coastal town of Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the popular and famous Komodo Island, we boarded our minibus and began the windy drive east, up into the hills, towards our first biding locality of the tour, the forest reserve of Puarlolo. This small reserve was initially set aside to protect the endemic and highly threatened Flores Monarch that was only discovered from this area as recently as 1971 and is still only known from a few scattered localities in the sub-montane forest on Flores. -

We report the scale of pelican predation and its impact on the breeding success of 5 seabird species monitored at Dassen Island in 2006. Pelican predation was observed on chicks of kelp gulls Larus dominicanus, crowned cormorants Phalacrocorax coronatus and Cape cormorants Phalacrocorax capensis. No predation on eggs was seen. Breeding success for 4 of the 5 species studied was low, with the white-breasted cor- morants Phalacrocorax lucidus having the highest breeding success (0.56 fledglings per nest). Cape and bank cormorants Phalacrocorax neglectus did not fledge any chicks, while crowned cormorants had a breeding success of 0.08 fledglings per nest. Kelp gulls had a hatching success of 46%, but only a few chicks fledged, giving a breeding success of 0.06 fledglings per nest. Pelican predation poses a threat to at least 3 of the 5 seabirds studied, all of which are endemic to southern Africa. Three spe- cies are globally Endangered or Near Threatened, and pelican predation places additional pressure on these species. -
