2 Example “Toolkit” Opportunities in Glenridding

1. Water Storage 2. Tree Planting for 3. River & Beck 4. Leaky Dams & Woody 5. Gravel Traps Areas stabilisation Modification between Debris Below Bell Cottage, By Keppel Cove Above Greenside, Catstycam, Gillside & Greenside – From Greenside to Grassings Other Upstream Options Brown Cove stabilise banks, slow the flow on tributary becks

6. Watercourse, Gulley, 7. Gravel Management Above & Below Glenridding Drain & Culvert 10. Household Flood Defences Bridge, as Beck Mouth 9. Community Emergency Maintenance Planning & Emergency Planning Flood Gates, Pumps, Emergency Drains & Culverts in the village Emergency Wardens 8. Community Flood Defences Stores Flood Stores Village Hall Road Beck Wall Sandbags 1. Water Storage Areas

The What & Why

Enhanced water storage areas to capture & hold water for as long as possible to slow the flow downstream.

Can utilise existing meadows or be more industrial upstream dams eg , Keppel Cove.

Potential Opportunities Partners Required

Glenridding • Landowners • Ullswater • Natural • Keppel Cove • EA • Grassings • UU Grisedale • LDNP • Grisedale Valley • NT Patterdale • Above Rookings on Keys to Success/Issues Hartsop • TBC • Landowner buy-in • Landowner compensation (CSC) • Finance

Barriers to Success

• Lack of the above • Cost 2. Tree Planting

The What & Why

Main benefits around 1) soil stabilisation, 2) increased evaporation (from leaf cover), 3) sponge effect and 4) hydraulic roughness. Main benefit from conifers for 2 & 3. Ideal place for 1 around rock bars – which is as good a place as any to start in our Parish around Grisedale valley, Catstycam and Birkhouse Moor and on Place Fell. Main benefit of 4 in poor quality areas around beck edges.

Potential Opportunities Partners Required

Glenridding • Landowners • Catstycam • Natural England • Birkhouse Moor • Forestry Commission • Greenside • Woodland Trust Grisedale Keys to Success • LDNP • Grisedale Valley • NT Patterdale • Side Farm • Landowner buy-in Hartsop • Landowner compensation (CSC) • Hayeswater • Finance • Hartsop Hall • Robs Howe Barriers to Success

• Lack of the above • Time to maturity • “Limited” value in heavy rain other than stabilisation? 3. River & Beck Modification

The What & Why

Modification to existing beck channels to slow the flow by either widening the becks in key places, meander them, “soften” beck edges to encourage spillage at peak flows

Potential Opportunities Partners Required

Glenridding Beck • Landowners • Between Gillside and Greenside • Natural England Grisedale Beck • EA/CCC (Main/Ordinary) • Grisedale Valley • LDNP Patterdale - Goldrill • NT • Side Farm Keys to Success Hartsop • Caudale Beck (done) • Landowner buy-in • Caiston Beck (done) • Landowner compensation (CSC) • Goldrill from Cow Bridge • Finance

Barriers to Success

• Lack of the above • Limited scope in the Dale outside Grisedale? 4. Leaky Dams and Woody Debris

The What & Why

Leaky Dams - slow the flow benefits especially in tributaries flowing into main becks. Woody debris tied in with Tree Planting above – specifically to generate “hydraulic roughness” – basically barriers to slow the flow.

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Glenridding Beck • Above Greenside on tributaries to • Landowners Rattlebeck • Natural England Grisedale Beck • EA/CCC (Main/Ordinary) • Tributaries to Grisedale Beck Keys to Success • LDNP (dams) • NT • Alongside Grisedale Beck (Debris) • Landowner buy-in • Waterfall Wood • Landowner compensation (CSC) Patterdale - Goldrill • Becks on Place Fell? Barriers to Success Hartsop • Kirkstone/Caiston Becks? • Lack of the above • Debris has potential to become dislodged in flood and cause obstructions downstream • Large numbers needed to have significant impact • Limited opportunities? 5. Gravel Traps

The What & Why

Catch gravel before it reaches bottleneck areas and causes problems – so upstream. Right now we’re effectively using Glenridding Village as a gravel trap which is not the ideal solution. This can be done on small scale (eg by Place Fell Cottage) and large scale (below Greenside)

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Glenridding Beck • Below Bell Cottage at Greenside • Landowners • By Grassings above Gillside • EA/CCC (Main/Ordinary) Grisedale Beck • LDNP • Above Kennel Bridge Keys to Success • NT • Below Grisedale Bridge Patterdale - Goldrill • Between Goldrill Bridge and Side • Landowner buy-in Farm Bridge • Initial Investment Hartsop • Ongoing funding for maintenance • Below Horsemans Bridge • Approval of relevant authority (EA/CCC) • Between Cow Bridges Barriers to Success

• Lack of the above • Cost of set up for large scale traps • Cost of regular maintenance • Disposal of removed gravel 6. Watercourse, Drain, Culvert & Gulley Maintenance

The What & Why

For watercourses banks need to be maintained, trees not allowed to grow too big and unless part of a wider plan, collapses in beck bank repaired. Drains, gulleys and culverts should be maintained on a regular basis with increased capacity created if required.

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Glenridding • Trees on beck edge from Campsite • Landowners to village • CCC (Highways) • Gullies behind Barraclough and • LDNP Browfield Keys to Success • NT • All road drains Grisedale • Trees in waterfall wood • Landowner buy-in and participation • All road drains • Ongoing funding for maintenance Patterdale • Trees alongside Goldrill Beck Barriers to Success • Field Drains by Church • All road drains • Lack of the above Hartsop • Cost of significant improvements (eg new • Culvert under Cow Bridge Cow Bridge culvert) • All road drains 7. Gravel Management The What & Why

The polite name for dredging. Removal of gravel which builds up in certain key areas capacity of the relevant beck and in place where the beck breaching causes problems – especially near houses and roads. Should be done in the June to September window except in emergencies….

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Glenridding Beck • From Village Hall to below • Landowners Glenridding Hotel • EA/CCC (Main/Ordinary) • Glenridding Beck Mouth • LDNP Grisedale Beck Keys to Success • NT • Below Grisedale Bridge Patterdale - Goldrill • Between Goldrill Bridge and Side • Ongoing funding for maintenance Farm Bridge • Approval of relevant authority (EA/CCC) Hartsop • Below Horsemans Bridge Barriers to Success • Between Cow Bridges • Lack of the above • Cost of regular maintenance • Disposal of removed gravel 8. Community Flood Defences The What & Why

Community wide defences – flood walls, re-landscaping and the like, benefiting multiple properties. Main example we have underway is the beck wall in Glenridding Village

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Glenridding Beck • Village Hall side beck wall • EA (underway) • CCC • TIC side reprofiling • Jenkins field run-off channel Keys to Success Grisedale Beck • Grisedale Bridge Beck Wall repairs (complete) • Funding & Scheduling by the relevant Patterdale - Goldrill authority • Old Water View Beck Wall repairs Barriers to Success (complete) Hartsop • Lack of the above • Cow Bridge A592 Beck Wall • Cost repairs 9. Community Emergency Planning The What & Why

Community wide resilience and emergency planning from emergency wardens to emergency flood, to emergency stores, comms and emergency response team.

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Project well under way! • EDC Flood Stores need equipping • CCC • Emergency Services Comms needs sorting • PMRT Keys to Success Training sessions needed • Full community engagement • Acknowledgement and inclusion by the emergency services

Barriers to Success

• Lack of the above 10. Household Flood Defences and Emergency Planning

The What & Why

Individual household preparation and resilience measures – from flood gates to maintaining riparian gullies and culverts and emergency planning and preparation

Potential Opportunities Partners Required Communication from Resilience team on individual emergency planning • EDC • CCC Participation in training sessions • CCF Keys to Success

• Individual engagement • Funding for required resilience measures

Barriers to Success

• Lack take up of funding on offer from EDC and CCF
