Specialist Cars Volkswagen, Hal- Darrin Wright

After several weeks of negotiations a deal was struck with East Fife F.C. to bring Darrin to Keirs Park . He made his debut on 28th October 2000 in a 8v1 win away to YM. Darrin scored with a header, the first of many goals.

THE TEAM for the record was as follows M.Graham, B.Kenny, S,O’Neill, J.Mitchell, J.Wright, L.Dair, B.Smith, D.Sinclair, Darrin, C.Smart, M.Thomson

At the end of his debut season he won his first junior trophy a 2 v 0 win against Oakley Utd in the Interbrew Cup. 2002/03 saw the reorganisation of the East Region Junior League with The Haws taking there place in the new Super League. During that first season ‘Haws’ strike force of Daz, Smarty and Sash went on to terrorize opposing defences, they scoring a total of 77 goals between them. Daz notching on 21 occasions. During his first 5 seasons he won a total of 11 Trophies. In all he won 17 trophies including The Haws first ever East Of Scotland Cup in 2015 .

To quote Daz . . . “no bad for a bang average player” ( tongue in cheek) ...... In 2008 he suffered a serious leg break, and for a long time it was touch and go whether he would ever play again. But being the man he is, he battled back to fitness although it took time to get his confidence back. He returned to his best form and became a major player once more.

It was in 2011 that Jock moved him back into the defence that for many at the club is where Daz excelled, arguably playing the best and most consistent football of his career. As a defender he had everything - strength , bravery , tackling ability, excellent in the air, cool under pressure, but above all he could play and pass well - all in all a clever footballer as well as a skilful one.

During his 15 seasons he could play anywhere, making him a managers dream. He became one of the most consistent and reliable performers at the Haws and very much respected by all who played alongside him. During his time at the club he had the great honour of being club Captain. Sadly at the end of 2014/15 season he decided to retire after 15 fantastic years. He accepted a coaching post at the club last season and when Kevin asked him to help out by playing it was just “Aye nae probs” - he played on 24 occasions ,and who can say that is the end of his playing days .

To quote a line , Who Is The Daddy? It’s got to be Darrin Wright Thanks for the memories.

HAWS MAN The Wright Way

Name: Darrin James Wright

Place of Birth: 22nd September 1978

Married: Yes to Louise for nearly 14 years, With son Kieran (20) and twins Sasha & Masson (9)

Hometown: Rosyth

Occupation: Director of Wrightline Roadmarkings

Signed for the Haws: October 2000

Previous Clubs: Alloa U18’s, Rosyth 21’s, East Fife the I signed for the Haws.

Favourite Team: Has to be Rangers, still have a season ticket today.

Favourite Ground: Tough call between Ibrox and Keirs Park!!

Best Thing About Junior Football: I enjoy the roughness of the games and the flying tackles that go on unpunished by the refs. The bus journeys with the team and the banter with the boys.

What Makes a Good Junior Player: You need to be strong, hard working and be committed. Many junior players could be playing at a higher level there are a lot of decent players. Take advice from senior players and most of all enjoy yourself.

Best you have played with I have played with So many great players over the years its hard to choose but a few stand out, Martyn Thomson for his goals throughout the years making him haws all time top goal scorer which is a great achievement. Lee Dair, John Mitchell, Brian Kenny and wee Smarty to name but a few.

Most Difficult Opponent:The most difficult opponents for me would have to be the lads at training, when I first joined the haws I was just a young laddie, I found it tough playing against all the very experienced boys, John Mitchell, Brian Kenny etc who were very good, hard experi- enced players.

Most Memorable Match You played in: The most memorable matches have to be the ones where we won league titles and trophies. But the ones that stick in my mind are the Cup final which we went on to win 2-1 in extra time with me scoring the winner. (And being in the paper with my Rosyth Rocket vest on!!) Also the semi final against Carnoustie, still hurts to this day, we were winning 3-0 at half time with 3 cracking goals to then go on and loose the game 4-3.

Most Memorable Goal Scored: Back to the when I scored the winning goal in extra time. Also the penalty in the East of Scotland cup final shoot out as we went on to win the tro- phy for the first time. I’ve scored that many goals (140)? I can’t remember them all!

When You First Played Junior Did You Expect to Last as Long? I never expected to still be playing at nearly 40 but there’s still life in the old legs yet! When I broke my leg in 3 places there was a time I thought I would never play again. I just love playing football, I was lost when I retired for a while. I also enjoy watching the wee man, Masson playing on a Saturday who loves to come and watch me play at the Haws too.

Biggest Influence on Your Career: This would have to be Jock Finlayson who I played under for 15 great years and was always there for me, I could call him night or day. Louise and the kids have always supported me and still do, alt- hough Louise is never happy missing out on a few holidays or having to come home on a Friday for a game on Satur- day!

What Will You Cherish Most About Your Haws Career: I will cherish nearly all my memories as a Hill of Beath player as most of them are happy times. I have made some great friends throughout my career and still keep in touch with many ex-players. Playing 10 years along side one of my best mates, Stewart Haddow was a great time, some of the car/bus journeys we had together were tremendous times, we enjoyed every minute. I have been lucky to be in- volved with such a great club and to be named captain for 6/7 years was an honour, to win leagues and cup finals is something I am proud of, not bad for a bang average junior player that kicked his way through some matches . One thing I’m not proud of is all the RED cards I received over the years discipline was never my strong point! I am privileged to still be part of the club after new manager Kevin Fotheringham (Bibby) asked me back to be part of his coaching team although I don’t know if I’m a player or coach these days!

I would just like to thank Jock Finlayson, Dave Bailie, Bill Smith, all the hard working com- mittee members and the fans over the years that have helped this great club get to where it is now. I can’t not mention Mary doll from the club for looking after me with her fab chicken curry on many occasions.

A Haws Legend Tributes to a Haws Legend

When I first joined the Haws at the age of 20 I was welcomed with open arms by everyone at the club. Daz and I struck up a good partnership both on and off the field throughout the years we played together. Daz has made a great achievement at the Haws and is a brilliant character to have around the club. He’s a player a lot of young ones can look up too and learn from given his commitment too one club. Well done Daz truly deserved Rikki Dair

Darrin "The Rosyth Rocket" Wright, Great player. To play at this level where do I start on this man ha ha!! for as long as he has proves that. Apart from the usual he's never Brilliant guy as well who over the bought a round yet with that magic years I've came to consider as a fiver!! friend. Tighter than two coats of paint mind you. Joking aside Daz was a pleasure to Lee Dair play beside, when the going got tough so did Daz. He was a player you could always rely on to get a goal in a hard, tight game (will never forget that infamous vest picture in the paper) - either that or provide the assist for one with a drop of the shoulder and a cross into the box. We all know he is getting auld though and loves a red card now he is slow and a defender.

Daz is easily one of the best players I have had the pleasure to play beside and thoroughly deserves his day and it is an honour to be here to enjoy it with him and his family.

All the best Rocket!! Martyn Thomson

Today’s Match Ball Sponsor Tributes to a Haws Legend

When Darrin arrived at Keirs Park in 2000 nobody could have foreseen what lay ahead for this young , thin , quiet boy with a glint in his eye. His early years saw him playing as a striker , eventually dropped into midfield , but it was when I moved him into the defence that he truly excelled and in most peoples’ opinion had his best days on the pitch. During his 15 seasons he could play anywhere - a fierce competitor a battler, a winner.

My favourite goal he scored - that’s easy the winner against Musselburgh in the Scottish Cup Quarter final at Keirs Park that goal had the place rocking.

He can take great satisfaction knowing he is only the second Haws player ever to complete 15 consecutive seasons, a phenomenal achievement . For myself and everyone connected with THE HAWS it has been a pleasure and privilege to have him at the club for so many years - and I must state he’s still going strong , For his loyalty , commitment , character and will to win I must put him up there with the Very Best, a credit to the game. Enjoy your special day.

Wishing, Darrin ,Louise, Masson and Sasha all the best for the future.

Jock

Only man I have met that can go out with £5 get legless and go home seven hours later with the fiver still in his pocket .You could not paint a red face on the man. Seriously known DAZ for over 20 years, played with and against him , a real winner and true Haws man. He has won about every trophy he could in the junior game, and will be a great role model for any young player coming through the Haws system. His testimonial is greatly deserved, a great player and person and a very good friend All the very best

Roger Duffin Tributes to a Haws Legend

Well done I signed with the Haws in 2008. At Daz on that time Daz was recovering from getting your his leg break and I spent the season Testimonial. listening to people telling me how Who’d have good a player he was . . . I’ve still to when you see it! joined the He’s easily the dirtiest player I’ve club back in 2001 that you’d play ever played with and only a couple months back we just about every position on the were jostling for the ball in the corner at Boness when park apart from the most he grabbed a full handful of my prized assets. important one (LOL) & become Joking aside he’s a player and a person I’d have in my the assistant manager! team every game if I could. A great team mate. David Westwood Michael Gemmell

What can you say about the Rosyth Rocket? Darrin is a great guy and just as good a player. He scored probably one of the best goals I’ve seen down at Bonnyrigg a few years ago but also had his fair share of reds too. Enjoy your testimonial Daz! Stuart Hall

Great player who won everything in the game except the Super League, although we were runners up three times. Travelled to every game together - don’t know who was the tightest? “You drive. No you drive. Alright I’ll take the van”. Great captain and very good friend and showed he was a winner and battler when coming back from a very bad leg break. Still doing the business at 39 that say’s it all. Stuart Haddow Team Lines

Barry Smith

The HAWS are also proud to celebrate Barry Smith’s 487 appearances for the club. A presentation will be made to Barry this afternoon.

One evening in 1998 the Haws were playing in a midweek game. As normal we were struggling for a team , when one of the local boys said I know a young boy who lives just round the corner. Five minutes later in walks Barry Smith , get a seat son, Jock then turns No .8 son, midfield, Go out and play “Yir ain game.” Baz did better than that - he scored both goals in a 2 v 2 draw.

After the game Tam McDonald excitedly said sign him he could be a real nugget. Barry was an attacking midfield player but most importantly could score goals. He became a very important player in the team set up, a real driving force. He had two spells at the club, first from 1998 until 2006. He then left and played at for 3 seasons. Jock got him to return in 2009 where he again made a significant contribution for five more years. His most memorable goal scored was the equaliser against Musselburgh in quarter final Scottish tie - A ten yard header from a Nobby McNab left side cross, in the 88th minute to level the tie . Magic!

Sadly for all concerned at the Haws, Barry retired due to work commitments and also taking his two boys to their own games at weekends. Barry played a total of 487 competitive games for Haws ,scoring 107 goals. winning 16 trophies, including 3 Fife League Championships and 4 Fife and Tayside cups. He was voted Player Of The Year in 2000 Barry was always a Haws man , and we have great memories of his time at the club. A quiet man who did all his talking on the pitch, he would be the first to say he played his best football during his career at Keirs Park.

Wishing Barry, Lisa, Calum and Connor all the very best in the future. Av tec Half Page
