Communication here is understood as the consrmction and circulation of social/cultural meaning. The Iranian revofution of 1979, is used as a case study EO investigate how nationness is constructed as a strategic political ideology and what meanings are associated to an I ranianness thus articulated. The majori~of works on the Iranian revolution identifj. Islam as the only ideological force involved in the mobilization and unification of the diverse groups who participated in the revolution. This thesis acknowledges the immense role played by Islam but argues against reducing the ideological field of determinations to a single level. An examination of the specific culture, history and politics of Iran in conjuncture with oppositional discourse .,generated in the two years leading to the 1979 revolution reveal that nationp.=ss is another recurring powerful ideological configuration which commands a profound emotional and political legitimacy. The thesis draws from and builds upon a critical review of thc literature. The work of Edward Said, Antonio Gramsci and Stum Hall set the basic theoretical framework for the study. Following an interdisciplinary approach, this exploration stands at an intersection between Cultural Studies branch of Communication theory and Middle-Eastern Studies. Various concepts are used 10 explore the construction of the nation, particularly the way in =hi& its official version articuIatd by the pre-revolutionary alliance of indigenous dlasmhip and fnrez'enL. isqxria!ism clashed with the popular interpretations of national identity. This crisis in communication of identity was a major source of discontent for the vast rnajorify of the population and the revolutionaq leaders did not fail to scilizc its immense strategic vaiue fur mass rnobilizarion. They constructed a different version ot franianness which resonated within the structures of popular cufture and consciousness anif served as a central ideofogical axis around which the diterss social and political factions articulated.     Celebrating the Centenary of the Communist Party of Iran Document of the Enlarged Plenary Meeting of Central Committee (Feb. 2020) Dear Comrades, June 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Iran. Although the seeds of the labour and social democracy movement in our homeland were planted and grown during the Constitutional Revolution (1906) - and had a decisive impact on its development and victory - the Iranian labour and communist movement in the form of an organised and cohesive party formally began in June 1920 with the founding of the Communist Party of Iran led by the prominent figure of the Constitutional Revolution, Haydar Amo-Oghli (also known as Haydar Khan). The history of the left and Marxist ideas in Iran dates back to the late 19th century and early 20th century. With the rapid growth of industry and the development of the capitalist mode of production, Marx’s teachings found their way to Iran. The social and political arena of that period could be summarised, within the historic development of Iranian society, as the transition from feudalism to capitalism. The nascent capitalism of that time was growing, albeit sluggishly, while in parallel the birth and formation of the working class was taking shape. In the late 19th century, under the influence and impact of progressive left-wing views, the anti- dictatorship struggle grew significantly, and a growing number of people began to join the revolutionary struggle. Its history dates back almost 5000 years. It is situated at a strategic juncture in the Middle East region of South West Asia. Evidence of man’s presence as far back as the Lower Palaeolithic period on the Iranian plateau has been found in the Kerman Shah Valley. And time and again in the course of this long history, Iran has found itself invaded and occupied by foreign powers. Some reference to Iranian history is therefore indispensable for a proper understanding of its subsequent development. The first major civilisation in what is now Iran was that of the Elamites, who might have settled in South Western Iran as early as 3000 B.C. In 1500 B.C. Aryan tribes began migrating to Iran from the Volga River north of the Caspian Sea and from Central Asia. Eventually two major tribes of Aryans, the Persian and Medes, settled in Iran. One group settled in the North West and founded the kingdom of Media. The other group lived in South Iran in an area that the Greeks later called Persis—from which the name Persia is derived.

ISBN 978-91-554-9577-0 The present study explores the image of the Islamic Revolution, the concept of the hero, and the concept of martyrdom as depicted in ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in Iran compared with ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in exile. The method is based on a comparative analysis of these two categories of novels. Roland Barthes’s structuralism will be used as the theoretical tool for the analysis of the novels. The comparative analysis of the two groups of novels will be carried out within the framework of Foucault’s theory of discourse. Since its emergence, the Persian novel has been a scene for the dialogue between the five main discourses in the history of Iran since the Constitutional Revolution; this dialogue, in turn, has taken place within the larger framework of the dialogue between modernity and traditionalism. The main conclusion to be drawn from the present study is that the establishment of the Islamic Republic has merely altered the makeup of the scene, while the primary dialogue between modernity and traditionalism continues unabated. This dialogue can be heard in the way the Islamic Republic, the hero, and martyrdom are portrayed in the twenty post-Revolutionary novels in this study.

    Asymmetries of Internationalism: Performing and Remembering Subnational Internationalism in the Age of Developed Socialism TIMOTHY NUNAN In 1976, Dushanbe’s community of some 150 Iranian socialists traveled 28 kilometers into the mountains to attend the opening of a resort for the exclusive use of the Iranian community in the Tajik SSR. The resort reflected the initiative of several members of the Tudeh Party of Iran exiled to Dushanbe.1 As one exile noted, “on Saturdays and Sundays, more than fifty to sixty Iranian emigrants gathered there with their families. This resort took on the name “Iran Zone” (Iran Zon/Mantaqah-ye Iran).”2 The opening of “Iran Zone” was but one chapter in a long history of exchange between the Persian-speaking lands of the Tajik SSR, Iran, and Afghanistan during the twentieth century. The Soviet Union had sponsored the creation of Tajikistan as a Union Republic in 1929 partly to offer Iranians and Afghans a socialist model. And against the background of the Tajik SSR’s transformation into a “laboratory of socialist development” in the 1960s, Dushanbe also become a place of refuge and education for Iranian and Afghan socialists.3 The opening of a complex like I would like to thank the Volkswagen Foundation and the German Research Foundation for their support. Persian “Capital”: Hassan Mortazavi’s New Translation of Marx’s Classic Work Frieda Afary May 31, 2012 [First published in Iranian.com: http://www.iranian.com/main/2012/may/persian‐capital] Abstract This paper examines the new features of Hassan Mortazavi’s new translation of Marx’s Capital Volume 1 and the responses which it has received inside Iran. I argue that what led to this translation was both a dissatisfaction with the failure of the Iranian left during the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and an interest on the part of a new generation of Iranian youth in philosophically based, non-dogmatic and constructive alternatives. Approaching this translation form the vantage point of current debates among leftist Iranian economists can also illuminate key concepts in Marx’s critique of capitalism. Introduction Although the mass protests that followed the fraudulent 2009 Iranian presidential election were violently suppressed in the course of six months, the democratic sentiments that gave birth to them are alive and searching for ways to express themselves. The dire state of the Iranian economy, the deep dissatisfaction of the Iranian masses with the existing regime and the continuing revolts in the Arab World are making it increasingly difficult for the regime to keep a lid on the boiling pot that is Iran. The mass protests in 2009 did not raise questions about economic justice similar to the early stages of the Winter 2011 revolts in Tunisia and Egypt.

    The Enemy of My Enemy The Soviet Union, East Germany, and the Iranian Tudeh Party’s Support for Ayatollah Khomeini ✣ Jeremy Friedman The Iranian revolution raises two key questions for scholars, just as it did for contemporaries: Why did the Shah fall, and why was he ultimately replaced by a theocratic regime that has proven to be remarkably resilient? The second outcome was not an automatic result of the first. The coalition that brought down the Shah ran the gamut from Maoist guerillas to secular and religious liberals to Islamists of various stripes and, perhaps most importantly, rested on a mass base without any explicit political commitments beyond the removal of the Shah. In February 1979 the best-organized armed forces belonged to the Marxist Fadaiyan, which launched a guerrilla struggle against the Pahlavi regime with an attack on the Siyakhal barracks in 1971, and the Islamic Left- ist Mujahidin, which began as a militant offshoot of the Liberation Move- ment of Iran.1 Liberals of various stripes, including the Freedom Movement led by post-revolutionary Iran’s first prime minister, Mehdi Bazargan, and the National Front led by Karim Sanjabi, were best positioned in terms of tech- nocratic skill and international legitimacy, and as a result were initially given the formal levers of power. Meanwhile, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s con- ception of the Velayat-e-Faqih, or “Guardianship of the Jurist,” was opposed by many senior clerics, including some, like Ayatollah Mohammad Kazem Shariatmadari, who rivaled him in prestige and influence.2 Some scholars have 1.     The Beginnings Beginnings to AD 2000: A Comprehensive Chronology of Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Iran by Iraj Bashiri copyright 2001 The Beginnings Ancient beliefs in the region divide humanity's passage on earth into three cosmic, myhtic, and historical periods. Of the three, of course, only the third or the historical period is real. The other two have cosmological and mytheological values that enhance our understanding of the present-day peoples of the region. One day elemnets of the mythic period might prove to be real but for that we need more solid documentation than is available at the present. For the purposes of this comprehensive chronology of the region, the cosmic and mythic periods are presented in the sequential order preserved in ancient chronologies. No attempt is made at correlating those eras in any form with historical or real time. The Cosmic and Mythic Eras The initial 3000-year battle between the forces of Ahura Mazda (Good) and Angra Mainyu (Evil) leads to the defeat of the latter. The second cycle of 3000 years begins with Ahura Mazda's creation of the cosmic world, i.e., the creation of the sky, water, earth, plants, the sacred white bull, and the cosmic man (Gayomart).
