Introduction There are many beginnings to the history of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). It would be a mistake to exclude the impact that disco had upon house, techno, acid house, and dance music in general. While disco evolved mostly in the dance capital of America (New York), it proposed the idea that danceable songs could be mixed smoothly together, allowing for long term dancing to previously recorded music. Prior to the disco era, nightlife dancing was restricted to bands or jukeboxes, which limited variety and options of songs and genres. The selections of the DJs mattered more than their technical excellence at mixing.

  • MAKING the SCENE: Yorkville and Hip Toronto, 1960-1970 by Stuart
MAKING THE SCENE: Yorkville and Hip Toronto, 1960-1970 by Stuart Robert Henderson A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada October, 2007 Copyright © Stuart Robert Henderson, 2007 Abstract For a short period during the 1960s Toronto’s Yorkville district was found at the centre of Canada’s youthful bohemian scene. Students, artists, hippies, greasers, bikers, and “weekenders” congregated in and around the district, enjoying the live music and theatre in its many coffee houses, its low-rent housing in overcrowded Victorian walk- ups, and its perceived saturation with anti-establishmentarian energy. For a period of roughly ten years, Yorkville served as a crossroads for Torontonian (and even English Canadian) youth, as a venue for experimentation with alternative lifestyles and beliefs, and an apparent refuge from the dominant culture and the stifling expectations it had placed upon them. Indeed, by 1964 every young Torontonian (and many young Canadians) likely knew that social rebellion and Yorkville went together as fingers interlaced. Making the Scene unpacks the complicated history of this fraught community, examining the various meanings represented by this alternative scene in an anxious 1960s. Throughout, this dissertation emphasizes the relationship between power, authenticity and identity on the figurative stage for identity performance that was Yorkville. ii Acknowledgements Making the Scene is successful by large measure as a result of the collaborative efforts of my supervisors Karen Dubinsky and Ian McKay, whose respective guidance and collective wisdom has saved me from myself on more than one occasion.

PARTY VOTING IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE: THE UNITED STATES, TAIWAN, AND JAPAN DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Chia-Hung Tsai, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Doctor’s Examination Committee: Dr. Herbert F. Weisberg, Adviser Approved by Dr. Paul A. Beck Dr. Jakub Zielinski __________________________ Adviser Department of Political Science ABSTRACT The purpose of this dissertation is to study the effects of political institutions on party voting. My hypotheses are that multi-member districts with presidential systems like Taiwan will generate the lowest level of party voting and that single- member districts with parliamentary systems like Japan after 1994 will generate the highest level of party voting. Multi-member districts with parliamentary systems like Japan before 1994 and single-member districts with presidential systems like the U.S. will lie between the two extremes. I analyze survey data for these four cases to test these hypotheses. Chapter 3 contains the analysis of congressional voting behavior in the United States. Using 1990 and 1998 data, I generate multi-nomial logit estimates to compare the relative influence of partisanship and candidate evaluations. The result shows that the effects of candidate evaluations and partisanship are nearly even across the two elections, and that incumbency status is also critical to the voting act. Chapter 4 is devoted to the analysis of voting behavior in Taiwan. The elections in 1992 and 1995 are examined to display the candidate-based voting behavior under multi-member districts with presidential system.
