This study aimed to examine upstream (spawning) and downstream (post-spawning) migration speeds, of curimatá-pioa (Prochilodus costatus) in the São Francisco River basin, southeast Brazil. Most upstream movements were recorded in October and November, in two well-defined migration windows, and downstream movements were frequent from December to March. Fish migrated upstream at an average migration speed of 34.4 km day-1 and no significant differences were detected in their speed between sexes and migration window they selected to migrate. No relationship was detected between upstream migration speed and biometric measures of tagged individuals. Upstream migrations speeds were significantly higher for fish that swam longer prior to reach telemetry stations in the same season, indicating that swimming performance may take some time to achieve its peak in upstream migration. Fish migrated downstream at an average migration speed of 97.7 km day-1, what is close to passive swimming in São Francisco River, and no significant differences in speed were detected between sexes or capture sites. The migration speeds measured here are the highest ever recorded for the genus Prochilodus and are among the highest reported for Neotropical migratory fish. Detalhes acerca da dinâmica migratória de peixes neotropicais são pouco conhecidos. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as velocidades em migração ascendente (reprodutiva) e descendente (pós-reprodutiva) da curimatá-pioa (Prochilodus costatus) no rio São Francisco, Brasil. A migração ascendente concentrou-se nos meses de outubro e novembro, em duas janelas migratórias, e a descendente de dezembro a março. Os peixes alcançaram velocidade migratória média de 34,4 km dia-1 em migração ascendente não sendo observadas diferenças nas velocidades em relação ao sexo e janela migratória em que o peixe migrou. Não foi observada relação entre velocidade migratória e características biométricas dos peixes. Diferenças nas velocidades migratórias ascendentes foram observadas para peixes que nadaram maiores distâncias antes de passar pelas estações de telemetria, indicando que o pico de desempenho natatório é alcançado algum tempo depois de iniciado o movimento ascendente. Em migração descendente a média de velocidade migratória foi de 97,7 km dia-1, próxima à natação passiva, e não foram observadas diferenças entre as velocidades em relação a sexo e ponto de marcação dos peixes. As velocidades migratórias medidas neste estudo são as maiores já registradas para o gênero Prochilodus e estão entre as maiores registradas para peixes migradores neotropicais. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: light transverse stripe, located in occipital region between the opercular openings, thin and sinuous; pale region below dorsal and adipose fins mottled with brown spots; and a dark stripe in the axis of gill filaments in alcohol preserved specimens. Microglanis leptostriatus is further distinguished from M. parahybae and M. garavelloi, the closest species geographically, by having the following combination of characters: longer head length [28.3–32.1% of SL (mean = 30.0) versus 25.5–28.5% (mean = 27.2) and 25.2–30.2 (mean = 28.0), respectively], shorter dorsal spine length [11.7–14.9% of SL (mean = 13.6) versus 14.1–18.1% (mean = 16.0) and 11.3–19.0 (mean = 15.5)], shorter pectoral spine length [12.5–19.7% of SL (mean = 17.4) versus 19.4–22.7% (mean = 20.6) and 18.5–26.2 (mean = 22.1)]. The aim being to present a synopsis of what has been accomplished rather than a list of the species which in our estimation are valid, all the doubtful species are enumerated and the synonyms of each species are given. All the names given to South American fishes prior to 1890 are therefore to be found here. We have endeavored to adopt and incorporate the results of the latest investigations, chiefly those of Giinther, Gill, Cope, Boulenger, Steindachner, and Eigenmann and Eigenmann. Since works of a re- visionary character on South American fishes are few, and many of the species have been recorded but once, many changes in the present list will doubtless become necessary. Instituto de Ciencias Biológicas, Escuela Politécnica Nacional (Quito, Ecuador), Casilla 17-01-2759, Telefax: 2236690, E-mail: [email protected] RESUMEN La lista de peces de agua dulce del Ecuador se sustenta en las referencias bibliográficas y en la base de datos de la colección de peces del Instituto de Ciencias Biológicas de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN). Las especies han sido clasificadas en 11 zonas Ictiohidrográficas tomando en cuenta las características de cada cuenca hidrográfica, que son el producto de factores biogeográficos e históricos los mismos que provocaron eventos vicariantes alopátri- cos y simpátricos, así como también la dispersión y especiación. La presencia de las monta- ñas costeras, las cordilleras andinas y la tercera cordillera, han influido en la morfología de los sistemas hidrográficos y en sus características ecológicas. La lista incluye 951 especies de peces de agua dulce intermareles. La región Costera incluye la zona Intermareal donde habi- tan 120 y 211 especies en las cinco zonas restantes. En la Zona Andina se ha registrado úni- camente la especie endémica Grundulus quitoensis y una especie introducida: la trucha arco iris (Onchorynchus mykiss). La región Oriental incluye la Alta Amazonía, con cuatro zonas y 125 especies. La Baja Amazonía se divide en dos zonas, con 680 especies. En Galápagos se registra un pez endémico (Bythitidae:Ogilpia galapagosensis), el cual habita en las cavernas de la isla Santa Cruz. Se conoce que cada veinte años se añaden entre 200 y 300 nuevos registros y de 50-60 especies nuevas para la ciencia.
