September and October 2015 Meeting Recaps

Both our September and October Meetings addressed the evaluation and treatment of debilitated dentition, but from two different perspectives of dentistry.

Many thanks to Wenyi Jia, DDS, MS, Prosthodontist, who shared her expertise in September and to James Walker, DDS, Endodontist, who did the same in October. Both gave informative, professional presentations in their respective fields of Dentistry. Also in October, our ODA Trustee, Matthew Biermann, DMD, MS gave a Trustees Report to those in attendance.

Thanks also to our generous sponsors. In September they included: Monique Kramer and Haylee Crane of Advanced Dental Technologies, Steve Leonetti of Assured Dental Lab, Zack Cross of Carestream, Mike Wilson and Jason Kroessin of O’Brien Dental Lab, Shari Zelman of Shikosha Dental Lab and Dentist Health and Wellness Stew Bartlett of WEO Media.

24-Hour Hotline In October our sponsors included: Laura Hotline phone number: 503-550-0190 Gaman and Chelsea Feist of Artisan Dental Lab, Steve Leonetti of Assured Dental Lab, ODA's Dentist Health and Wellness Program offers Zack Cross of Carestream, Jaime Phifer and confidential assistance, referrals and education to Ryan Issaks of Henry Schein, and Bryan dentists and their families in dealing with physical, Becker of O’Brien Dental Lab.

House of Delegates Report 2015 Submitted by Dr. Cindy Layport The 2015 House of Delegates opened at 1:30 on a beautiful Friday afternoon at the Riverhouse Resort in IN-NETWORK Bend Oregon. ADA president Dr. Maxine Feinberg gave an informative, sometimes amusing and sometimes PROVIDER sobering address. She is an excellent speaker. It’s very rare to have the ADA president at our House of Contracting with SAVE on dental Delegates. She wasn’t sure another has come, except supplies, technical & when Dr. Bill Ten Pas was president (1995-6). (I Advantage Dental professional services. remember meeting Dr. Geraldine Morrow (1991-2) but means you will be a maybe that wasn’t during the HOD). She emphasized Network Provider Signing up is easy and how the ADA is trying to stay current and to look forward. there are no fees. The ADA program for dental student financing moved for PacifcSource forward in 4 months instead of taking years. She talked about the issue of busyness. Their research team found Fee reimbursements are that 46-65 year olds are still going to the dentist. They very competitive. didn’t grow up with insurance and still value treatment even if it’s not covered. It’s the 25-46 year olds that are not going to the dentist, even if they have insurance. Next year is the 150th anniversary of Code of Ethics and she asked us to remember to stay true to our values. She gave a nice call out to our own Dr. Rick Asai for working so hard as our district trustee. Dr. Steve Timm gave his State of the Association address. He praised the high attendance and involvement of the trustees with the new governance system. We now have permanent funding for a state Dental Director that should have positive ramifications for insurance reimbursement and such. Mandatory dental exams for first graders passed the legislature. The ODA is now working towards having an “exam day” next August to screen kids that may not have a dental home. The ADA software program Aptify has now been adopted so there is greater coordination between our local and state association and the ADA. He quoted Jason Aldean (a country singer, for those not fortunate enough to be fans). “Make a few marks, leave a few stains” and “We may not be around in 20 years but they’ll sure know that we were here”. The Oregon Dental Foundation realigned with ODA so Conor McNulty is now the Executive Director of both and Maurisa Fisher is the new Director of Development for the ODF. The new Oregon Board of Dentistry Executive Director is Mr. Stephen Prisby. He had been the board’s Office Manager for 3 years. They will hold a strategic planning session in April. The Board is encouraging using the Prescription Drug Monitoring system. Dr. Dan Blickenstaff is a new examiner.

House of Delegates Report 2015 Continued from Page 5 They are looking to hire another investigator this year to try to get the case time to completion from one year down to 3 ½ months. There are 3,811 licensed dentists and 4,391 licensed hygienists. Dr. Marucha, the Dean of OHSU, reported that patient numbers are up and they have hired 20 new faculty, revitalized oral surgery and have a new Chair of Oral Pathology and Radiology. They are looking for a Grow Your Practice, new Pedo chair and 13 other faculty. The information is out there but getting people to pay attention is a problem. If you are still reading this then I’m preaching to the choir! Saturday morning our component discussed membership and communications. We’re concerned about loss of connectivity. We will be doing non-member outreach this year since Washington County is down to 50% membership in the ADA. Dr. Dave Howerton and Robert Gootee gave a report on Moda and the challenges of the implementation of the ACA. He touched on the Commerce subsidiary, which offers loans to dentists at better rates than banks, and the Moda Center branding. In Oregon the percentage of dental lives covered under Premier is 78%, 22% are PPO, and 5% are individual. Delta Dental of California is the opposite. is our big employer that offers the PPO. The new state Dental Director, Dr. Bruce Austin, spent 20 years working with Kaiser Permanente and one year with Capital Dental. He lives in Corvallis but has offices in Salem and Portland. He is excited to support oral health as part of public health and health policy. This year the Mega Issue discussion was on Quality Metrics. This was a panel presentation with brief discussion. I’m sure Membership Matters will have a more detailed summary. Quality monitoring needs a culture of trust and

In Texas they looked at annual dental visits and sealants, and programs could gain or lose up to 4% of their cap rate based on performance. Several Deltas are using a “dashboard” program so providers can see their data, i.e. how many sealants are done on ages 6-8 compared to other providers in the network. Walmart will begin dental targets starting next year. In the afternoon the new officers, delegates, and leadership committee members were sworn into office. Our lobbyist spoke at the DOPAC lunch and Dr. Asai gave a trustees report. Dr. Joni Young’s presidential address will be printed in Membership Matters. She urged us to get involved to make our society useful and valuable. We had good cross section if ages this year. More young people are getting involved. If you know someone who is not a member of organized dentistry, please reach out and let them know how much organized dentistry does on our behalf. Participate! Even if it’s just for the food.
