1963 [1541], Genoa, Andrea Doria (1466-1560), Admiral and Condottiere, Iron Medal, by Leone Leoni, bearded bust of the Admiral right, in armour, a trident behind his head, rev a galley with many oarsmen, a small boat before it, 39mm (Att 5; Arm I, 164, 9; Plon pl.XXIX, 1-2; Kress 431; Bargello 712; Milford Haven 122; Scher, The Proud Republic, 1). An unusual and somewhat later cast, but of good quality and very fine. £300-400 As an admiral of the Holy Roman Empire he commanded several expeditions against the Turks, and captured Corona and Patras and with Charles V, led the siege and capture of Tunis in 1535 (see previous lot). Doria was defeated by the Turks at Preveza in 1538, and he was involved with the Emperor again in 1541, on the ill-fated Algerian expedition. Leone Leoni had been condemned to the galleys for an act of violence against a German goldsmith, only to be released by Doria. He produced the Doria medals in Genoa in 1541, by way of thanks. 1964 [1571], Netherlands/HRE/Italy, Antoine Perrenot, Cardinal Granvelle (1516-1586), The Papal Standard Presented to Don Juan de Austria (1545-1578), Spanish Admiral and General, illegitimate son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Bronze Medal, by Giovanni V. Melone, bust of the Cardinal left, ANT. S.R.E. PBR. CABD. GRANVELANVS., rev a crowded reception at which Don John kneels before the Cardinal who presents him with the Standard, legend above, IN [HOC] VINCES, 44mm (Att 985; Arm I, 265; Bargello 748; Smolderen, Granvelle, XXV; Clifford 135, obverse). Pierced by D of CARD, very fine. £250-350 Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle who was appointed Bishop of Arras in 1538 and created Cardinal in 1561, was in Naples where he presented the Standard, which had been previously consecrated by Pope Pius V, to Don John, who arrived in the city in August 1571. Don John was at Messina in September and then in command at the famous Battle of Lepanto on the 7th October, where the Ottomans under the command of Ali Pacha were defeated, losing all but 40 of their fleet of 300 ships. The BM specimen (Attwood 985a) is a poor aftercast from a pierced original example. 1965 1664, The House of Hapsburg, Leopold I, the Hogmouth (1640-1658-1705), Medallic Schautaler, Vienna Mint, crowned eagle a-top globe, SIC VINITIS NON PAVEO, rev the HIS monogram radiating over an inverted crescent, QVO SVPERIORE POTENTIOR., 41mm (Mont 879; Sch 2513; Horsky 2049). Nearly extremely fine and very rare. £1500-2000 The coin commemorates the resounding defeat of the Turks at the Abbey of St Gotthard, on the Raab, by Raimondo, Count of Montecucculi (1609-1680). A twenty year truce was to follow. 1966 c.1670, Turkish Sultan Amurath Murad, London Penny token, bust of Amurath to left, rev inscription (Williamson 967). Nearly very fine and cast, as is usual for this type. £120-150 1967 1677, Vatican, Innocent XI, Odescalchi (1611-1676-1689), Piastra or Scudo, Year II [1677], by Giovanni Hamerani, Papal tiara and crossed keys above ornate shield of arms, rev façade of St Peter’s, PORTÆ. INFERI. NON. PRÆVALEBVNT, 44.5mm (Dav 4088; Munt 39). Very fine. £800-1000 The reverse legend is from Matthew, Chapter XVI, verse 18, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”, and it refers to the Pope’s incessant endeavors against the Ottoman Empire. SERVASTIS. ET ORBEM., 63mm (Julius 181; Hirsch 35; Horsky 2062). An attractive and unusual item, the medallic images a little scuffed, very fine and rare. £250-300 1971 1683, The House of Hapsburg, The Siege of Vienna and the Victories over the Turks, hollow Silver Box Medal, the lid inset with a silver cliché of the reverse of the medal by Anton Meybusch, as in the previous lot, the Austrian cavalry charge against the Turks, panorama of Vienna beyond, with Fame flying above, URBEM. SERVASTIS. ET ORBEM., 60mm, the shallow (8mm) box otherwise plain and with slightly convex base (Julius 181; Hirsch 35; Horsky 2062). Extremely fine. £250-300 1977 [1686], Lombardy, Charles V (Léopold-Nicolas-Sixte), Duke of Lorraine (1643-1675-1690), The Expulsion of the Turks from Hungary, Bronze Medal, by Ferdinand de Saint-Urbain (1658-1738), bust of the Duke right, hair long and falling over his shoulder, wearing armour and the Collar and Badge of the Golden Fleece, rev the German eagle ‘fires’ thunderbolts at mosques in the Hungarian Landscape, VIRTVS. GERMANORVM, and in ex., PANN. VINDICATA, 55mm (Beaupré 1, p.24; BDM V, 310). A handsome medal, nearly extremely fine. £200-300 Charles Léopold-Nicolas-Sixte, Duke of Lorraine, was the nephew of Charles IV. He was deprived of the rights of succession to the duchy, and having fled from France he entered the service of the Holy Roman emperor. He was twice a candidate for the Polish crown (1669 and 1674). He took the title of Duke on his uncle’s death in 1675, though France still held Lorraine. He was commander of the Imperialist forces in the third of the Dutch Wars and at Nijmegen (1678), he refused to accept Lorraine on King Louis XIV’s terms. He took part in the defence of Vienna (1683) and in expelling the Ottomans from Hungary. Charles V married (1678) Eleanora Maria, sister of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I.
