Ready for more? Subscribeto get unlimited access across your devices. OBITUARY Rupert Hine obituary British folk musician turned record producer who masterminded Tina Turner’s triumphant comeback album Private Dancer Monday August 10 2020, 12.01am, The Times Rupert Hine in the recording studio in 1973. He went on to pioneer digital production with synth-pop acts in the 1980s FIN COSTELLO/REDFERNS Share Save When Rupert Hine was producing the album that resurrected Tina Turner’s career, he made the mistake of asking her to do a second take. It was the first time he had worked with her and they were recording Turner’s 1984 comeback album Private Dancer, for which Hine had written the opening song I Might Have Been Queen. She had taken his demo and rehearsed the song at home until she felt she had mastered it. “Then she would call you up and say, ‘I’m ready’,” Hine recounted. “I would pick her up from her house and drive her to the studio. She would jump out, run to the nearest microphone and let it out.” He soon realised his mistake in asking for two takes as a matter of course. “The one take was just extraordinary — word, tone and beat perfect.” When they began working together she had been living on food stamps after her divorce from her abusive husband, Ike Turner. Private Dancer went on to sell more than 20 million copies and top charts around the world. Hine also worked on Turner’s next two bestselling albums Break Every Rule and Foreign Aair but never felt the need again to demand a retake after her “nerve- tingling” one-shot performances.

  • 1986 - Rock's Renaissance Man
1986 - Rock's Renaissance Man Written by Time From: Time magazine, October 27, 1986 Got a movie. Got a record. Got some wild, wild life. "Oh," David Byrne said, "you want to see the African fire ants?" It was deep night out on a Texas plain flat as a pan bottom and just about burned through. A recent rain had slaked the land a little but brought forth legions of ants to infest the ground and pester a nearby film set. Exterminators were summoned, ants dispatched, but one actor, arriving late, felt he had missed out on some fun. "Follow me," said Byrne sympathetically, as he grabbed a flashlight and walked into the dark. This is a man whose first great song was called Psycho Killer. A man who is the formative force behind Talking Heads, one of the decade's most formidable bands, a group responsible for the sweetest, strangest, funniest rock to roll over the '70s and nestle into the '80s. A man who should be hanging close to the set, seeing to the details of directing his first feature film, not striking out on some weird nocturnal expedition in search of hymenopterous marauders. He may not resemble the manic murderer in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but he will never be mistaken for Mark Trail either. Is this a man to follow into the night? No question. It took a while, and a little stumbling, but Byrne found what he was looking for. He stood near a mound of earth and shone his light down and waited.

  • Tina Theory: Notes on Fierceness
Journal of Popular Music Studies, Volume 24, Issue 1, Pages 71–86 Tina Theory: Notes on Fierceness Madison Moore Yale University Touching Queerness Everything I know about being queer I learned from Tina Turner. More specifically, you might say that Ike and Tina’scover of “Proud Mary”— the soundtrack of my childhood—taught me, through camp performance, how to be a “Mary.” During the holiday parties at my great-grandmother Lucille “Big Momma” Jones’ house, for as long as I can remember, we kids ended up in the “Children’s Room” so the grown folks could curse, drink whiskey, smoke, laugh, and be as loose as they felt. The “Children’s Room” was not that special. It was usually a bedroom with a computer or television and a few board games, located next to the food which was always laid out buffet style. My favorite moments were when we would lip sync for our lives by doing drag karaoke, where my cousins and I would lock ourselves away and perform great popular music hits for an invisible audience. We pulled songs from Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears’ latest album to older joints that circulated long before our time, songs like “Stop! (In the Name of Love)” by Diana Ross and The Supremes and Patti LaBelle’s“Lady Marmalade.” But one song we kept in our catalog and that we seemed to have the most fun with was the Ike and Tina Turner cover of “Proud Mary.” Whenever we did “Mary” I insisted in being Tina. But what was it that drew me—a black gay boy rooted, like Tina, in Saint Louis, which is either the South or the Midwest depending on who
