It’s hard to believe that this day week, I was in the air on my way back to Belfast, after 26 days in India: 18 in Calcutta, 5 in Darjeeling and the last three in Delhi. I am still in between two totally different worlds.

The sights, sounds and smells of the crowded streets of Calcutta (an estimated 18 million live there) are still vivid- the crazy traffic with its orchestra of honking horns; the people sitting, lying (sometimes dying?), washing, selling, hammering, begging on the broken pavements; stray emaciated dogs and the proverbial ‘holy Cow’ wandering in and out of traffic; the black dust of Calcutta’s dry season hanging like a heavy pall over the city, getting under nails and into lungs, turning white into grey; splashes of colour lifting the heart, the bright saris of its beautiful women, the multicoloured flowers, scarves, shawls on sale in the market. Calcutta bombards the senses!

The smiling faces and the sad stories of so many of the children I met in our ‘rainbow’ schools and orphanage, are still before me- many with no other home but school, some as young as four; the countless teenagers I met whose main ambition is to do well at school, so that they can get a good job and take their parents out of poverty and destitution.

I have such special memories of the kindness, charm and courtesy of the Indian people; of their welcome and interest in the stranger; of their willingness to share and invite you proudly into their one-roomed homes. The dedication and commitment of my Loreto sisters and their lay colleagues to the poorest of the poor in Calcutta and in many other parts of India, will always be a source of pride and inspiration.

Someone asked me today if I had to pick one abiding memory of my experiences in India, which would I choose. ‘Sunrise over the Himalayas’ was my immediate reply. Who could argue with that?

PE Conference On the 16 December 2005 a number of lower and upper sixth students had the opportunity to attend the University of Ulster’s outreach programme. During the day we had the chance to work along side different integrated schools and discuss topical issues such as the new national stadium. After lunch in the executive suite we were able to interview sports people, for example the past Ulster rugby captain Andy Ward and we were able to talk about different issues in sport within Northern Ireland and about problems which concern them within their sporting environment. It was an extremely rewarding day and the issues raised will benefit our studies hugely. Thanks to the PE department and Miss Vaughan for taking time out of her busy schedule to take us.
