Kent PAGE 2 EMPLOYEE NEWSLETTER Department Updates Engineering & Operations You may have noticed that softer feel under your feet as you walk around the 1st floor and basement areas, it’s because of the new carpet that was installed. The IT department has had a very busy month moving the traffic department to the 1st floor, KMYU sales to the 2nd floor, rewiring all of the desks on the 1st floor and updating the iNews clients on all of the newsroom computers. To speed up Craig Hart’s rendering ability, we were finally able to deploy this long awaited computer upgrade. You might have noticed 3 new hours of daily programming on KMYU as we launched “KidsClick” on July 1st. Where’s the Radar? Our Baron Radar system is being interfered with and we are searching diligently to find the source of the problem. The KJZZ transmitters had two new exciters (modulators) installed to improve its signal quality and reliability. Did you know that KJZZ and 5 other TV stations in the Salt Lake Market have to change their broadcast channel? This is due to Spectrum Auction that occurred earlier this year. There are 987 stations nationwide that will also have to change their broadcast channels. The Master Control department welcomes back Lee Oliver to the team! Don’t forget to sign up and attend the AVID training classes in August! Sales The Sinclair Broadcasting Group sales department in Salt Lake City is off to a great start for 3rd quarter. The Combined Market Sales effort for the month of July was exceeded for the first time this year and as of today, we have exceeded the CMS goal for August. September looks to be quite challenging but with our excellent staff- I am sure we can achieve success. One of the key wins for us in third quarter is the outstanding sales effort with High School Football. Lead by Keith Pasker, the campaign was very strategic and effective. The goal is to be the National Champion for SBG in terms of overall sales and broadcast quality for high school football. Additionally, one of the keys to success has been the outstanding New Business efforts lead by Mark Crowther- local sales manager of KUTV. Mark designed a very entertaining and effective new business contest which incorporates all marketing consultants from all three stations. I also want to recognize Shannon Eaker for her leadership in managing the national spot business for all three television stations as well as all the political advertising which unexpectedly came our way. Lastly, I am asking all employees at SBG to help us recruit key positions. We are looking for marketing consultants and sales assistants for all three stations. If you know of anyone who you feel would fit well, please have them contact me at 801-839-1117 or [email protected]. Remember, a cash incentive for your referral could come your way! Traffic Our traffic department currently handles 13 stations in 4 different markets: Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Medford and El Paso. We had two employees that recently left us Tyler Kimball (Scheduling Specialist) and Lee Oliver (El Paso Inventory Specialist). We are currently hiring! News July ratings period we were #1 or #2 in every newscast, HH and key demos. We had the second best month in station history with 6.7 million page views! In addition, all newsroom folks are undergoing Social Media training as we try and advance in this area. Speaking of which, I would like to highlight Lindsay Storrs who continually comes up with strong social media posts. A few other shout outs to Kylene and Tazya for all the extra work they have done while we have been down producers. Kudos to Richard Archuleta for all the extra work he has put in helping to coordinate Fresh Living guests and updates to the show and finally a shout out to Matt Michaela, who picked up the phone at 7am and shot all the flooding in the Sugar House Storm. A WORD ON FRESH LIVING! We would like to welcome Kari Hawker-Diaz as our new Fresh Living host, and Ashley Beyer as our new Fresh Living producer! Both ladies have transitioned into their new roles seamlessly and continue to make this a great program for our KUTV viewers! Ashley has been working hard with the sales team to create more visually compelling segments that appeal to a larger audience; and Kari has done a great job at making the clients feel comfortable, taking ownership of the product, and helping our guest and co- hosts feel comfortable! EMPLOYEE NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 A Tribute to Matthew Perry Hearn KUTV Marketing Consultant February 2014– July 2017 Matt Hearn (aka Hearn, Hearndog, Hearndoggy, Matty), a marketing consultant for KUTV, passed away on July 13th as a result of a climbing accident. Matt was the heart of our sales team at KUTV, and was everyone’s friend. It was impossible to be in a bad mood when you were around Matt. He had an infectious laugh, and he was always so positive. In his three-year career at KUTV, Matt earned the “Marketing Consultant of the Year” award twice. He loved his job and the people he worked with, and was one of the hardest working members of our team. In his spare time, he was a lacrosse coach at East High School, and was a mentor to his players. He absolutely loved the outdoors and was often rock climbing, hiking, skiing, and more.
