Pressure of Trying to Make Each Note and Phrase a Little Jewel

DICK HYMAN ...pure straight ahead heaven... doesn’t miss a beat or drop a false note... CHRIS SPECTOR, MIDWEST RECORD ANY DAY IS A GOOD DAY FOR SOME SONGS Many recording sessions are tense affairs, because the musicians feel the pressure of trying to make each note and phrase a little jewel. But at a Rossano Sportiello session, his delight in being allowed to make music, his easy assurance that there is no need to rush, makes everyone feel relaxed and joyous. No one could feel tense when his directions to the other musicians are so gentle, “You watch me. Maybe something nice will come out.” During playbacks, the control room was atypically quiet, because everyone (including visitors Harry Allen and Rebecca Kilgore) was busy listening and smiling. This trio is a friendly supportive community. Each voice is equal yet the three players come together from the first notes in a lovely synergy. Hear Ed Metz’s beautiful touch, his light-hearted rhythms that recall Jake Hanna so well: feathery brushwork or explosive accents. (Ed provides wonderfully apt incidental percus- sion, too.) Hear Nicki Parrott’s swinging pulse, the rich sonorities of her bass. Dur- ing this session, I would have sworn I heard a rhythm guitar because her sound is so ripe and full. As a singer, Nicki is one with the song. Her subtle, understated delivery is always convincing, whether she’s being perky or rueful. -

JazzFeast: Where the Square is Hip By Tony Mottola Jersey Jazz Editor PRINCETON — Places don’t get much hipper than Palmer Square in downtown Great food and top Princeton, at least not when JazzFeast holds forth there as it did for the 15th time on jazz acts make Saturday, September 16. More than 20 area restaurants set up shop around the a fresh-air picturesque green serving up delicious food. Meanwhile four top jazz acts served feast for up five hours of tasty music on the nearby outdoor stage. body and JazzFeast regularly attracts a crowd of 5,000 soul. plus music lovers from the tri-state area and this year’s picture perfect weather brought out an especially large, enthusiastic crowd. The music, programmed and emceed by the NJJS’s own Jack Stine, swung from the first downbeat to the last coda. First up were Alan Dale and The New Legacy Band, who marked their 14th consecutive appearance at the event. This is one swinging outfit and they know their way around the Ellington, Basie and Cole Porter songbooks, to mention just a few. The Dale group was fronted for much of its performance by vocalist Bryan Clark. Clark’s look is 21st Century hip and he brings a contemporary sensibility to material associated with the likes of Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and other classic vocalists. He makes the music new and alive with his easygoing and swinging style. -

Nov. 5, 1954 Introduction: Hot Lips Page was for unknown reasons rather marginally recognized in my Oslo Jazz Circle upbringing, and only later I opened my ears to his fine trumpet playing! Dan Morgenstern’s various liner notes helped a lot too! History: First music lessons from his mother, a former school-teacher. Early efforts on clarinet and saxophone, specialised on trumpet from the age of 12. Joined kids’ band led by bass drummer Lux Alexander. Left music temporarily, attended high school in Corsicana,Texas, left to do manual work in Seminole oil fields in Texas. Became regular member of band accompanying Ma Ra iney, made first visit to New York with Ma Rainey for bookings at the Lincoln Theatre. Worked with a T.O.B.A. circuit touring band, accompanied Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, etc. Joined Troy Floyd Band in San Antonio, also worked in Texas with Sugar Lou and Eddie’s Hotel Tyler Band. Was heard with this band by bassist Walter Page (no relation) and subsequently joined the Blue Devils band early in 1928. Left the band in 1930 to join Bennie Moten’s band, worked mainly with Moten until 1935, after that leader’s death (April 1935) led own quintet in and around Kansas City. Worked as a specialty act with Count Basie at the Reno Club, Kansas City (1936), was signed by manager Joe Glaser and moved to New York.
