For legal requirements we’re required to file an annual report for the financial year which runs from March-March, for the benefit of members we’ve included an update to September 2009 when this report was written. We are very pleased with the success and achievements of Compass during this past year, which has been the busiest and most proactive 12 months the organisation has ever been though in its 6 years of existence, the flurry of activity and output has been non-stop! Looking back 2008/2009 saw some clear milestone successes both politically and organisationally for Compass. Snap shots include the launch of our revolutionary process to generate new and popular ideas for these changed times with our How To Live In The 21st Century policy competition where we encouraged people to submit and debate policy ideas; to organise meetings in their homes and we ran a series of regional ideas forums across the country - over 200 policies were submitted and then voted on by our members – our biggest ever exercise in membership democracy.

In the United Kingdom, the election for the country’s 73 Members of the European Parliament will be held on Thursday 22 May 2014. The elections come at a crucial junction for UK-EU relations, and are likely to have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s relationship with the rest of Europe: a surge in support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) could lead to a Britain that is increasingly dis-engaged from the EU policy-making process. In parallel, the current UK Government is also conducting a review of the EU’s powers and Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly pushed for a ‘repatriation’ of powers from the European to the national level. These long-term political developments aside, the elections will also have more direct and tangible consequences.

  • ST Andrews Newsletter Feb 2021.Pdf
News from Saint Andrew’s Conservatives NewsUpdate Hornchurch & Upminster Conservatives New Year Edition 2021 Update from Cllr John Mylod I want to update residents in St Andrews on several things being bought to my attention recently. I have recently been working with the St Andrews Safer Neighbourhood Team to address concerns about the potential for criminality at the Abbs Cross end of Devonshire Road, due to poor street lighting. After consultation, the street lighting team have said they will look into adequately lighting up the area, and working together, we can make St Andrews safer. In Dorrington Gardens, there has been a mobile Covid-19 testing unit recently, of which the Department for Health have now agreed will be a permanent testing site, for local residents to use to get tested. If you need to book a test use the NHS Covid-19 app, or visit the NHS or Havering website to book online. This is to ensure we stop the spread of Covid-19 and keep our community safe. Fly tipping locally has been a concern of several residents, and although Havering has regular rubbish collections, I am still aware that fly tipping is ongoing in St Andrews, especially in the country lanes. Should you know of any rubbish being tipped locally, please call 01708 434343, or email me at [email protected] Julia Lopez MP Julia has been working hard for the local area over Christmas and into the New Year, and also as a minister in the Cabinet Office. In December, Julia was proud to be a ministerial sponsor of the EU (Future Relationship) Bill which passed into law over the Christmas break, cementing the new trade deal between the EU and UK.

  • Jonathan Bartley and Sian Berry’S Speech to Autumn
Jonathan Bartley and Sian Berry’s speech to Autumn Conference 2020 2 October 2020 [Sian] Welcome to this extraordinary Green Party conference! We’re really sorry we can’t all be together today – but it does give me and Jonathan a chance to do things a little bit differently! So we have come here to the Broadgate cinema, in one of the very oldest parts of London. Because we think at a moment like this, it’s good to reflect on our history – and plan for our future. We live in such alarming times, but they are also times of possibility. [Jonathan] If your social media is anything like mine, your feed will be full of people asking: “What the hell is up with 2020?” Fires in the arctic and the US. Refugees in the channel. Thousands sleeping rough on our streets. A pandemic that has killed a million people. I was sitting at home a couple of weeks ago, and I switched on “Extinction: the facts” – the David Attenborough documentary. And I found the tears just rolling down my cheeks. But I think I was crying for two reasons. There’s the obvious one. Who is not moved by the countless species being lost? How? How, have we let this mass destruction happen? But the second reason was the poignancy with which the Attenborough programme brought home the connections between the climate and the ecological crisis, coronavirus, and the way our economy and society is structured. Everything is a green issue. Everything is connected. That is finally being recognised.
