Nineteen journalists are believed to have been murdered since 2000, with four killed in just the past year. Numerous others have been attacked, assaulted and arrested during this time. -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This research paper is based on the positioning and later strategy of repositioning of DAWNNEWS channel. It was July the 21st, 2007 when this channel got a kick off. Its initial positioning strategy was of a top notch English (language) News channel in Pakistan. Later it went into a repositioning strategy of Urdu (language) news channel catering to the mass market. Reasons behind the repositioning include adaptation of brand extension strategy, non-existence of appropriate human resource, preoccupation of market by leading foreign channels like CNN and BBC and bottom line revenues in the initial phase due to poor media ratings. Major overhaul was done in logo, substance, impact of graphics and taglines. As a result brand image was shifted to a positive tone and strategy proved successful and bought he expected results. Key words: Positioning, Repositioning, DAWNNEWS channel Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present the concepts of Positioning and Re-positioning by virtue of a real-life case study from a media giant DAWN group. It starts with contemporary conceptual framework of initial positioning as exclusive English (foreign language) news channel. and then re-positioning to a blend of Urdu (local language) and English. At the end this paper provides useful insights into the repositioning strategy followed by DAWN media group. -

This work is original and does not violate copyright laws. i Abstract This study aimed at investigating association between exposure to private news and current affairs TV channels and political socialization of young urban Pakistanis (N=300). Exposure to private news TV channels along with state-controlled news TV channels, public and private news radio channels, newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines and social media (Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp) was measured. Political socialization was operationalized as political interest, internal political efficacy and political participation (electoral and non-electoral). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Descriptive analysis revealed that private TV news channels were the dominant source of political information for the participants of the study. In inferential analysis, news consumption variables of each medium, was separately regressed with political interest, internal political efficacy and political participation. The findings revealed that among all the sources of news and current affairs, exposure only to private news TV channels were positively associated with political interest, internal political efficacy, and non-electoral political participation. -

The Role of Media in Pakistan Dr. Nazir Hussain The explosion of information revolution and the proliferation of electronic media have virtually converted the world into a globalized village. Now, information, news and events have no barriers and control to reach anywhere around the world. These happenings reach to every living room instantaneously even before the governments can react and control it. The enhanced role of media has impacted the social, economic and political life. What one thinks, believes and perceives are based on the images shown on the media. It has penetrated the routine life of all individuals; commoners, elites, decision-makers and statesmen. States have often been inclined to use the media as a propaganda tool for political and military purposes. The decades of 1980s and 1990s have for instance witnessed the use of US media for politico-military ends. The projection of Soviet Union as an ‘Evil Empire’, the Saddam saga and the ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ and the Osama Bin Laden from ‘Freedom Fighter to a Terrorist’ are some of the examples. However, now the media has come out of the domain of the state controls, it is the financiers, the media houses and the media anchors that make heroes and villains, leaders and terrorists. Therefore, the role of media is growing from an observer to an active player in political decision making. The political leaders and government officials have become dependent to convey and defend their policies through the use of media. The media where ‘more anti-government will earn more business’ is considered a basic key to success. -
