CC _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Radio Days NEW Monday 14 December BBC One Northern Ireland, 10.35pm Forty years ago, as the stroke of midnight welcomed in New year’s Day 1975, the voice of John Bennett introduced a new radio station to the people of Northern Ireland. In the 40 years since, BBC Radio Ulster has been there for the good times and the bad, covering the nation’s celebrations and tragedies with a range of news, speech, music, sport and language programming. And joining in the laughter and tears all the way along have been the station’s listeners. Radio Days, on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday 14 December at 10.35pm, meets a handful of some of the station’s ardent audience. Helping mark BBC Radio Ulster’s 40th anniversary, Radio Days hears from many of the station’s presenters who bring the programmes to the airwaves and from the people who make those programmes what they are – and are the main reason they exist – the listeners. In the programme, loyal listeners and faithful friends of the station talk about their unique relationship with BBC Radio Ulster and its distinctive mix of presenters and programmes. From Hugo fans Jean and Lily, to regular callers Norman and Bertie and listeners Pat, Ann and Margaret we discover the pivotal part BBC Radio Ulster plays in the lives of its audience. Narrated by Stephen Nolan, the programme also features rare behind the scenes archive footage and interviews familiar voices from Walter Love (who along with John Bennett broadcast on the station since it started), Wendy Austin, Hugo Duncan, Cherrie McIlwaine and Linda McAuley to Stephen Nolan, Rigsy and Vinny Hurrell. Radio Days follows the live BBC Radio Ulster 40th Birthday Gala from the Ulster Hall, Belfast, which can be heard on the station from 8pm-10.30pm. Presented by Wendy Austin and John Toal, this one- off concert features a host of special performances and appearances representing the station’s programming across news, speech, arts, music, sport and comedy. PERSPECTIVES OF ELITE ATHLETES WITH DISABlLITIES: PROBLEMS AND POSSIBlLITIES. A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Ian Stuart Brittain Department of Leisure Faculty of Leisure and Tourism Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College BruneI University July, 2002 Abstract Disability sport, and especially elite disability sport, has been all but ignored in terms of academic research in this country. This thesis, therefore, is an attempt to begin redressing this situation. It focuses on the Great Britain Paralympic track and field squad, that competed in the Sydney Paralympic Games between 18th and 29th October 2000. Through a series of in-depth interviews, which took a focused life history approach, the researcher attempted to gain a greater understanding of the kinds of factors, both positive and negative, that had an affect upon the lives of these athletes from the time they first took up the sport of athletics to the present day. In line with current research in the field of disability studies it adopts a social construction approach. The results of the analysis are set within the social model of disability in order to try and highlight the impacts of the perceptions of disability, embedded in the dominant medical model discourse, on these athletes' attempts to get involved and progress within the sport of athletics. Key findings highlighted by this research are the major influence that the medical model discourse of disability has on the perceptions of large areas of the able-bodied population with regard to disability in general and disability sport in particular. Able-bodied perceptions of disability greatly influence not only to what extent people with disabilities are able to operate within the society they live in, but also how they view themselves and their own abilities.

The pinnacle was our Sports Day held on Tuesday 12th June at the Mary’s Peter Track. Fortunately the rain stayed off for Sports Day and the thunder storms began just as the final relay of the day took place. All of the year 8 – 11 pupils were selected to take part in Sports Day either in an individual event, Relay or the 800m. The track events included the 100m, 200m, 800m and the 4X100m Relay. The field events were the Long Jump, Shot putt, Javelin and Discus. The day ended with the staff relays. This year both year 11 teams managed to beat the male and female teams. A first for the students! Lets not say the staff are getting slower, but rather that the students are being trained and coached to such a high level by the PE Department! Sports day was a great accomplishment thanks to the organisation and planning of Mrs Gough, Mr McCloskey, the House team captains and the assistance of all members of staff at the track.

HOUSE OF LORDS SESSION 2007-08 REGISTER OF LORDS‘ INTERESTS AS AMENDED TO SHOW POSITION ON 23 JULY 2009 +Ordered to be printed 21 July 2009 PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS LONDON — THE STATIONERY OFFICE LIMITED HL Paper 150 (session 2008-09) FOREWORD By the Clerk of the Parliaments The Code of Conduct adopted by the House on 2nd July 2001 establishes a Register and a Registrar of Lords‘ Interests. The operation of the Register is overseen by the Sub-Committee on Lords‘ Interests, a sub-committee of the Committee for Privileges. The Registrar, who is responsible for preparing the Register and advising Members, consults the Sub-Committee when necessary. The Code itself is printed below. The Code requires that the Register be reprinted once a year and this new printed edition meets this requirement and follows an exercise in which all Members of the House were invited to confirm or amend their entries. Between printed editions, the Register is continually kept up to date in loose-leaf form and may be inspected at the Table of the House and in the Table Office and the Library. Members of the public can inspect the Register in the Parliamentary Archives, and an electronic version, updated every week, is available online at www.parliament.uk. The Code requires all Members of the House of Lords in receipt of a Writ of Summons, who are not on Leave of Absence, to register all relevant interests. The test of relevance is whether the interest might reasonably be thought by the public to affect the way in which a Member discharges his or her parliamentary duties.

It is a live TV broadcast comprising a definitive review of the sporting year and a series of sporting awards culminating in a public vote for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The interweaving of entertainment-based features ensures the programme reaches a wide and diverse TV audience, beyond traditional sports fans. The live TV programme forms part of an arena-based event taking place in front of thousands of members of the public. SPOTY is reputation-defining for BBC Sport and an important means for showcasing the breadth and depth of sport in the UK. Taking the event to different arenas enables the BBC to represent the nations & regions of the UK and the show itself is a high profile and long-standing part of the BBC’s pre-Christmas TV schedules. SPOTY 2018 was the 65th anniversary of the TV programme having grown significantly in both scale and scope since first invented by Sir Paul Fox. The two-hour programme consisted of 8 separate awards, culminating with Welsh cyclist and Tour de France winner, Geraint Thomas, picking up the main award.
