The variety and number of organisations engaged in this work is remarkable, and the number con- tinues to grow. Twenty years marks a point in the history of the Brighton Declaration, where we can and must review the implementation of this document. The ‘From Brighton to Helsinki’ IWG Progress Report provides examples of initiatives that have been undertaken by Brighton Declaration signatories and Catalyst-subscribers to empower women. In spite of these efforts, the latest data shows that in some areas progress has been limited. Ⓒ Hitotsubashi University SPORT, NATIONALISM AND GLOBALIZATION: RELEVANCE, IMPACT, CONSEQUENCES ＊ ALAN BAIRNER Relevance International Sport At the most basiclevel of analysis, it is easy to see the extent to whichsport, arguably more than any other form of social activity in the modern world, facilitates flag waving and the playing of national anthems, both formally at moments such as medal ceremonies and informally through the activities of fans. Indeed there are many political nationalists who fear that by acting as such a visible medium for overt displays of national sentiment, sport can actually blunt the edge of serious political debate. No matter how one views the grotesque caricatures of national modes of behavior and dress that so often provide the colorful backdrop to major sporting events, one certainly cannot escape the fact that nationalism, in some form or another, and sport are closely linked. It is important to appreciate, however, that the precise nature of their relationship varies dramatically from one political setting to another and that, as a consequence, it is vital that we are alert to a range of different conceptual issues. For example, like the United Nations, sportʼs global governing bodies, such as the International OlympicCommittee or the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), consist almost exclusively of representatives not of nations but rather of sovereign nation states. It is also worth noting that pioneering figures in the organization of international sport, such as Baron Pierre de Coubertin who established the modern Olympics in 1896, commonly revealed a commitment to both internationalism and the interests of their own nation states.

As part of the Congress Week, the FIS Council as well as the various FIS Technical Committees, Sub-Committees and Working Groups will meet from Sunday 13 th to Wednesday 16 th May, whilst the FIS Congress (General Assembly) itself takes place on Friday 18 th May. The Organisers of the FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2022 and the FIS Alpine, Nordic, Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships 2023 will be elected by the FIS Council on Thursday 17 th May. The six Candidates (see p. 2) will present their concepts to all Congress participants from display stands and during the respective Technical Committee meetings as well as having a final opportunity to present to the FIS Council on Tuesday 15 th May. Consider the consumption of sports events. People across the globe regularly view satellite broadcasts of English Premier League and European Champions League matches. In these games the best players drawn from Europe, South America and Africa perform. The players use equipment – boots, balls, uniforms etc - that are designed in the West, financed by multinational corporations such as Adidas and Nike and hand-stitched, in the case of soccer balls, in Asia using child labour. This equipment is then sold, at significant profit, to a mass market in the towns and cities of North America and Europe. Several transnational corporations are involved in the production and consumption phases of global soccer – some of whom both own the media companies and have, as in the case of Sky TV, shareholdings in the soccer clubs they screen as part of what sociologists term the ‘global media sport complex’.
