Morris At present there is much confusion regarding the correct genus and species name for the shallow water, West coast sea pen.Origin- ally described in 1860 as Sarcoptilus (Ptilosarcus) gurneyi Gray, this sea pen has subsequently been placed inthree different genera, one of which has had three spelling variations, and in three different species groups under three spelling variations.Not only is there ex- tensive synonymy, but also homonymy exists between the generic names of a sea pen and a moth. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the valid taxonomic name and to supply more information about the sea pen with respect to its anatomy and biology. Sea pens were collected from Puget Sound, Washington, and from Monterey Bay, California,Their internal and external morpholo.- gies were compared; no detectable differences were found between the two populations, except in coloration.Coloration was not considered to be a stable enough character upon which tobase species differences. The taxonomic history of the West coast sea pen waspresented and reasons given for the subordination of the genusLeioptilus to the genus Ptilosarcus.Ptilosarcus gurneyi was recommended as the proper and valid binomen forthe shallow water sea pen with all other names being subordinated. The higher classification utilized here follows Bieler et al. (2010). Another useful resource is the online World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS; Gofas 2013) where the traditional ranking of Pteriomorphia, Palaeoheterodonta and Heterodonta as subclasses is used. This list includes 237 bivalve species from marine and freshwater habitats of British Columbia, Canada. Marine species (206) are mostly derived from Coan et al. (2000) and Carlton (2007). Freshwater species (31) are from Clarke (1981). Common names of marine bivalves are from Coan et al. (2000), who adopted most names from Turgeon et al. (1998); common names of freshwater species are from Turgeon et al. (1998). Changes to names or additions to the fauna since these two publications are marked with footnotes. Marine groups are in black type, freshwater taxa are in blue. Introduced (non-indigenous) species are marked with an asterisk (*). Marine intertidal species (n=84) are noted with a dagger (†). Quayle (1960) published a BC Provincial Museum handbook, The Intertidal Bivalves of British Columbia. Harbo (1997; 2011) provided illustrations and descriptions of many of the bivalves found in British Columbia, including an identification guide for bivalve siphons and “shows”. Lamb & Hanby (2005) also illustrated many species. -

THE FEEDING HABITS OF PLEUROBRANCHAEA CALIFORNICA MACFARLAND, 1966 (OPISTHOBRANCHIA, NOTASPIDEA) IN MONTEREY BAY, CALIFORNIA A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Stanislaus and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science in Marine Science By Karen E. Battle August, 1994 ABSTRACT The natural diet of Pleurobranchaea californica was studied in Monterey Bay, California. Specimens were collected from January 29 to November 9, 1992, at depths of 30-100 meters, using an otter trawl and an interfacial trawl. Three hundred fty-six animals were collected and ranged in size from 0.01-411 grams with most of the animals weighing between 1.0 and 50 grams. The gut contents were examined and 16 different prey types were identified. Thirty-three percent of the guts were empty. Many animals had sediment in their guts, which was presumed to be a result of their ingesting or attempting to ingest prey items that live on or below the substratum. P. californica a euryphagic predator with pronounced cannibalism. Individual Index of Relative Importance values showed that opisthobranchs made up the largest portion of the diet of P. californica. The opisthobranchs in the diet included P. californica (as prey), Armina californica and Aglaja sp. He spoke about his participation with Captain Hancock and the Galapagos expedi tions aboard the Velero III. This ship was 195 feet long, 31 feet wide at the beam and cruised at 13.5 knots. It had adequate fuel and water for each cruise to last two to three months with a minimum of port calls. Thirty-two people could be accomodated on board. Of these, usually fourteen were in the captains party and were provided private staterooms with bath. Also onboard were a photographer, chief operations officer, and a physician. The visiting scien tists included individuals from major zoos, aquaria, and museums. In later cruises, many graduate students from U.S.C. participated. The Velero III had five 60 gallon aquaria for maintenance of live aquatic specimens. Two 26 foot launches and three 13 foot skiffs were available for shoreward excursions and landings. Though busily collecting specimens pertaining to their interests on each cruise, the scientists had considerable exposure to entertainment. -

A polyvalent and universal tool for genomic studies in gastropod molluscs (Heterobranchia: Tectipleura) Juan Moles1 and Gonzalo Giribet1 1Harvard University Faculty of Arts and Sciences April 28, 2020 Abstract Molluscs are the second most diverse animal phylum and heterobranch gastropods present ~44,000 species. These comprise fascinating creatures with a huge morphological and ecological disparity. Such great diversity comes with even larger phyloge- netic uncertainty and many taxa have been largely neglected in molecular assessments. Genomic tools have provided resolution to deep cladogenic events but generating large numbers of transcriptomes/genomes is expensive and usually requires fresh material. Here we leverage a target enrichment approach to design and synthesize a probe set based on available genomes and transcriptomes across Heterobranchia. Our probe set contains 57,606 70mer baits and targets a total of 2,259 ultra-conserved elements (UCEs). Post-sequencing capture efficiency was tested against 31 marine heterobranchs from major groups, includ- ing Acochlidia, Acteonoidea, Aplysiida, Cephalaspidea, Pleurobranchida, Pteropoda, Runcinida, Sacoglossa, and Umbraculida. The combined Trinity and Velvet assemblies recovered up to 2,211 UCEs in Tectipleura and up to 1,978 in Nudipleura, the most distantly related taxon to our core study group. Total alignment length was 525,599 bp and contained 52% informative sites and 21% missing data. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference approaches recovered the monophyly of all orders tested as well as the larger clades Nudipleura, Panpulmonata, and Euopisthobranchia. The successful enrichment of diversely preserved material and DNA concentrations demonstrate the polyvalent nature of UCEs, and the universality of the probe set designed. We believe this probe set will enable multiple, interesting lines of research, that will benefit from an inexpensive and largely informative tool that will, additionally, benefit from the access to museum collections to gather genomic data. -

With a diversity that can exceed macrofaunal richness in many groups, the micro/meiofaunal component is one of most overlooked biotas in surveys due to the time-consuming nature of collecting, sorting, and identifying this assemblage. We review trends in micromollusc research highlighting the Australian perspective that reveals a dwindling taxonomic effort through time and discuss pervasive obstacles of relevance to the taxonomy of micromolluscs globally. Since a high during the 1970s, followed by a smaller peak in 2000, in 2010 we observe a low in micromolluscan collection activity in Australia not seen since the 1930s. Although challenging, considered planning at each step of the species identification pathway can reduce barriers to micromolluscan research (e.g., role of types, dedicated sampling, integration of microscopy and genetic methods). -
