This year’s CXHKIR will welcome its largest ever number of global racing stars to Sha Tin on Sunday, 14 December. Four G1 races, worth a combined HK$62m (approx. US$8m) in stakes, have invited a record 37 international runners to join 18 of the very best from Hong Kong. Sixteen individual G1 winners are present from 11 racing jurisdictions overall. Word has it that most Japanese breeders were skeptical about this horse’s future as a sire. Some said there was a problem with his overly stormy temperament being passed on. Some said they did not care for his cow hocks (a limb deformity in the gambrels called splay foot or knock knees). And some, imagining a muscular physique because he was said to be a dirt champion from America, voiced disappointment when at first sight, he appeared to be a fragile, gangly-legged horse. Fuji Kiseki, debuted in summer 1994 as one of the first year’s crop, utterly dispelled such talk and offered our first inkling that Sunday Silence Fuji Kiseki (by Sunday Silence) was not just any horse and may well be a super sire. The 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas – run early in May at Newmarket – are designed to find the best of the 3yo milers…. The Derby and the Oaks – run at Epsom on the first weekend in June – are designed to find the best 12-furlong colts and fillies from the classic generation. Later in the season at Doncaster, the St Leger provides an additional test of stamina and sets out to find the best of the 3yo stayers…. Races like the Eclipse, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Arc De Triomphe in France provide top-level G1 races that set the younger horses against their older counterparts – and set out to establish the best horses across the generations…. These races are difficult to read. All the most talented horses in each division – at least those which are fit – tend to show up. All the major yards are represented. Every single runner is trying. A horse can run the race of its life in one of these big races and it can still get beaten. So how do we solve these betting puzzles? It’s never ‘easy’ to solve these races – but help is at hand in the form of historical evidence.
