Smooth Like Strait Gets His Grade I in Shoemaker Mile TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 2021 SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT COUNTRY GRAMMER BATTLES BACK IN GOLD CUP by Alan Carasso GETS HIS GRADE I Narrowly favored at 9-5 in Monday's GI Hollywood Gold Cup, WinStar Farm's Country Grammer (Tonalist) became his Lane's IN SHOEMAKER MILE End-based stallion's first Grade I winner, narrowly outbattling Royal Ship (Brz) (Midshipman) in a rousing finish. Away alertly, the former Paul Pompa runner was taken hold of to sit second as longshot Brown Storm (Chi) (Scat Daddy) rolled to the front and showed the way through moderate splits of :22.92 and :47.16. Switched off nicely in the two path for the run down the backstretch, Country Grammer was asked for a bit of acceleration and overtook Brown Storm at the three-furlong pole, but he soon had outside company in the form of Royal Ship, who was deftly slipped a bit of rein by Mike Smith at the 4 1/2-furlong marker and raced three wide just off the pace into the turn. Country Grammer and Royal Ship hit the quarter pole more or less on even terms, but the last-out GII Californian S. hero appeared to have all the momentum and was clearly in front entering the final eighth of a mile. But Country Grammer Smooth Like Strait | Benoit remained in for the fight, re-took the lead inside the final sixteenth of a mile and scraped home just in front as Royal Ship Cannon Thoroughbreds= Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute), came back at him at the wire. narrowly beaten in three previous attempts at the top level, "He ran super well,@ said winning jockey Flavien Prat. • The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races 2008 – the Turf World Championships
Welcome to the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races 2008 – The Turf World Championships. This year’s CXHKIR will welcome its largest ever number of global racing stars to Sha Tin on Sunday, 14 December. Four G1 races, worth a combined HK$62m (approx. US$8m) in stakes, have invited a record 37 international runners to join 18 of the very best from Hong Kong. Sixteen individual G1 winners are present from 11 racing jurisdictions overall. In the FORM GUIDE of each race, the PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS table provides you with a bird-eye's view of the race. This at-a-glance guide gives you a full form summary of the horses in a simple and concise table. Another handy tool is the INTERNATIONAL RATINGS CHART. In weight-for-age races like the Cathay Pacific HKIR, generally speaking, the higher a horse's rating, which is based on racing performance, the better its chance to win. A preliminary SPEED CHART has been included to assist in identifying likely positions in running. Please note that this is preliminary only and the full Speed Map will be available after barrier draw in the SpeedPOWER Form Guide on www.hkjc.com/english/formguide/formguide.asp. If you need further information and analysis, just flip over to the next section where you will find the COMPREHENSIVE PAST PERFORMANCE of the horses. Also included is the FORM ANALYSIS, which highlights the notable achievements and racing characteristics of each horse. Another feature is the RATINGS HISTORY CHART. This chart indicates the quality and consistency of a horse's previous 10 starts through a graphical illustration of the ratings achieved in these races.

Word has it that most Japanese breeders were skeptical about this horse’s future as a sire. Some said there was a problem with his overly stormy temperament being passed on. Some said they did not care for his cow hocks (a limb deformity in the gambrels called splay foot or knock knees). And some, imagining a muscular physique because he was said to be a dirt champion from America, voiced disappointment when at first sight, he appeared to be a fragile, gangly-legged horse. Fuji Kiseki, debuted in summer 1994 as one of the first year’s crop, utterly dispelled such talk and offered our first inkling that Sunday Silence Fuji Kiseki (by Sunday Silence) was not just any horse and may well be a super sire. • Flat Season 2017 Winning Profiles Page 1
Flat Season 2017 Winning Profiles www.againstthecrowd.co.uk Page 1 Key trends point to big-race winners The big-race narrative unfolds across the British flat season in a series of races designed to find the best of the best in specific divisions…. The 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas – run early in May at Newmarket – are designed to find the best of the 3yo milers…. The Derby and the Oaks – run at Epsom on the first weekend in June – are designed to find the best 12-furlong colts and fillies from the classic generation. Later in the season at Doncaster, the St Leger provides an additional test of stamina and sets out to find the best of the 3yo stayers…. Races like the Eclipse, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Arc De Triomphe in France provide top-level G1 races that set the younger horses against their older counterparts – and set out to establish the best horses across the generations…. These races are difficult to read. All the most talented horses in each division – at least those which are fit – tend to show up. All the major yards are represented. Every single runner is trying. A horse can run the race of its life in one of these big races and it can still get beaten. So how do we solve these betting puzzles? It’s never ‘easy’ to solve these races – but help is at hand in the form of historical evidence. Over the years, specific types of horses tend to come out on top time and time again in the biggest races.
