Smooth Like Strait Gets His Grade I in Shoemaker Mile TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 2021 SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT COUNTRY GRAMMER BATTLES BACK IN GOLD CUP by Alan Carasso GETS HIS GRADE I Narrowly favored at 9-5 in Monday's GI Hollywood Gold Cup, WinStar Farm's Country Grammer (Tonalist) became his Lane's IN SHOEMAKER MILE End-based stallion's first Grade I winner, narrowly outbattling Royal Ship (Brz) (Midshipman) in a rousing finish. Word has it that most Japanese breeders were skeptical about this horse’s future as a sire. Some said there was a problem with his overly stormy temperament being passed on. And some, imagining a muscular physique because he was said to be a dirt champion from America, voiced disappointment when at first sight, he appeared to be a fragile, gangly-legged horse. Fuji Kiseki, debuted in summer 1994 as one of the first year’s crop, utterly dispelled such talk and offered our first inkling that Sunday Silence Fuji Kiseki (by Sunday Silence) was not just any horse and may well be a super sire. The 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas – run early in May at Newmarket – are designed to find the best of the 3yo milers…. The Derby and the Oaks – run at Epsom on the first weekend in June – are designed to find the best 12-furlong colts and fillies from the classic generation. Later in the season at Doncaster, the St Leger provides an additional test of stamina and sets out to find the best of the 3yo stayers…. Races like the Eclipse, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Arc De Triomphe in France provide top-level G1 races that set the younger horses against their older counterparts – and set out to establish the best horses across the generations….
