This was written during a global pandemic, civic unrest, and personal upheavals. However, to quote a dear friend, “non bellum, sed completum est.” I could not have ventured into and finished such a monumental undertaking, and at such a time, without my very own village. I would first like to thank Julie Langford, my advisor, mentor, and confidant, without whose support and guidance this dissertation would not be what it is today. Julie saw something in me five years ago that I clearly did not know I was capable of doing. She enthusiastically encouraged me to apply for my Ph.D and has been there offering the same support and enthusiasm since the very beginning. During the writing of this dissertation, she gave every draft, no matter how rough it was, careful review and attention. I recognize that this is something that not many professors do for their students. Julie’s commitment to me and my research has meant so much, and it has made me a better writer and scholar. Working on our publication was one of the best experiences I had in graduate school. I learned so much working closely together over the last few years. Sufficient analysis of Julian’s own perspective reveals a complex individual who does not conform with the simplified caricature of Julian “the Apostate” who was focused on assailing Christianity. His aversion to the Christians was mainly motivated by the fact that they refused to participate in the state cult. This thesis will explore the relationship between properly honoring the gods and state health, its origins, and why it was essential to sacrifice to the gods.

    Eunuchs in the East, Men in the West? 147 Chapter 8 Eunuchs in the East, Men in the West? Dis/unity, Gender and Orientalism in the Fourth Century Shaun Tougher Introduction In the narrative of relations between East and West in the Roman Empire in the fourth century AD, the tensions between the eastern and western imperial courts at the end of the century loom large. The decision of Theodosius I to “split” the empire between his young sons Arcadius and Honorius (the teenage Arcadius in the east and the ten-year-old Honorius in the west) ushered in a period of intense hostility and competition between the courts, famously fo- cused on the figure of Stilicho.1 Stilicho, half-Vandal general and son-in-law of Theodosius I (Stilicho was married to Serena, Theodosius’ niece and adopted daughter), had been left as guardian of Honorius, but claimed guardianship of Arcadius too and concomitant authority over the east. In the political manoeu- vrings which followed the death of Theodosius I in 395, Stilicho was branded a public enemy by the eastern court. In the war of words between east and west a key figure was the (probably Alexandrian) poet Claudian, who acted as a ‘pro- pagandist’ (through panegyric and invective) for the western court, or rather Stilicho. Famously, Claudian wrote invectives on leading officials at the eastern court, namely Rufinus the praetorian prefect and Eutropius, the grand cham- berlain (praepositus sacri cubiculi), who was a eunuch. It is Claudian’s two at- tacks on Eutropius that are the inspiration and central focus of this paper which will examine the significance of the figure of the eunuch for the topic of the end of unity between east and west in the Roman Empire.

After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

    Rebellious Legions and Senatorial Delegations: Tacitus’ Histories 1.19 and 1.74 Reports of the revolt of the Fourth and Twenty-Second Legions in Upper Germany during the first days of 69 prompted the Roman Senate to vote to send out a delegation. Tacitus discusses the make-up of this delegation in Histories 1.19.2. Members of the senate obviously were to participate, but there was also discussion secreto (Heubner 57; Sage ANRW II.33.2 899) as to whether Piso, newly adopted by Galba, should go “in order to add the prestige of a Caesar to the senate’s authority” (illi auctoritatem senatus, hic dignationem Caesaris laturus). The senate further resolved (placebat) to send Laco, the praetorian prefect, with the legati. Laco, however, refused (is consilio intercessit). At the end of Tacitus’ account we learn that the senate left the selection of the actual members of the delegation to Galba. The emperor consequently exposed the political nature of the delegation and the power struggles among the Romans by incompetently naming and then revising his list of envoys as they either begged to go or to stay in Rome, ut quemque metus uel spes impulerat. Otho recalled this delegation (1.74.2) after Galba’s murder and his own accession to power, only to send out another specie senatus (cf. Talbert 1984, 410), after adding praetorian guards per simulationem officii. In addition to being sent to the two legions in Upper Germany, Otho sent the delegation to the Italic Legion and an urban cohort stationed in Lugdunum. According to Tacitus, the praetorians were sent back without being granted the opportunity to “mix” (Damon 164) with the legions, although the senatorial envoys got to Vitellius and stayed with him longer than was justifiable (Chilver 137).

Colleen Melone Pushing the Limit: An Analysis of the Women of the Severan Dynasty Abstract By applying Judith Butler’s theories of identity to the imperial women of the Severan dynasty in ancient Rome, this paper proves that while the Severan women had many identities, such as wife, mother, philosopher, or mourner, their imperial identity was most valued due to its ability to give them the freedom to step outside many aspects of their gender and to behave in ways which would customarily be deemed inappropriate.

Beneath each statue an inscription was appended. Many of these inscriptions, known also as elogia, have survived. They record the name, magistracies held, and a brief account of the achievements of the individual. The reasons why these inscriptions were included in the Forum is the focus of this thesis. This thesis argues, through a detailed analysis of the elogia, that Augustus employed the inscriptions to propagate an image of himself as the most distinguished, and successful, leader in the history of Rome. Newell acquired a large hoard of tetrarchie folles from Hassan Abd-el-Salam, a Cairo dealer. Beyond the fact of its purchase at Cairo, nothing is known of the hoard's provenance; but this combines with the dominance of Alexandrian issues to suggest an Egyptian find spot. At an unknown date, Newell listed the contents of the hoard, describing types and legends and including references to Voetter's catalogue of the Gerin collection. About 1932 poorly preserved and duplicate specimens were removed from his trays; until recently, 400 such specimens remained in theîr original box and wrappings. Approxîmately 350 more pieces, aIl later issues of Alexandria, were discarded, sold, or lost ; they cannot now be located. It is possible to reconstruct the hoard fully from Newell's notes, though not in every case to identify pieces which came from it (1). Where his notes cau be checked against current ANS holdings, they are accurate; and despite the loss of many pieces which might have illuminated mint activity at Alexandria, the size and prove­ nance of the hoard warrant a record of its contents.
