Audio share of streaming is 54% in 2016, growing from 44% through the first six months of 2015. • There are 3 albums that have sold over 1 Million units so far this year (Adele/25, Drake/Views and Beyonce/Lemonade), while there was only 1 at this time last year (Taylor Swift/1989). • Creative release strategies, driven mostly by digital formats, continue to be a major story. Drake’s “Views”, Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and Kanye Wests “The Life of Pablo” have all been successful this year and are led by digital formats. Also, 2016 saw the first album to chart based solely on streaming activity, when Chance the Rapper debuted at #8 in its first week with 57M audio streams. • Digital purchasing has seen the largest decline of all formats with Digital tracks down 24% and digital albums down 18%. Total digital purchasing (Albums + Track Equivalents) is down 21% vs. the first half of 2015. However, factoring in the gains in streaming and total digital consumption is up 15%. • Vinyl continues to become a bigger piece of the physical music business. The albums address the social implications of racism in the present day, throughout Lamar’s life and throughout the lives of his ancestors. In my analysis of Lamar’s albums, I address the history of American chattel slavery and its aftermath as a social system that privileges white over black. On the basis of my interpretation of the penultimate track on To Pimp a Butterfly, “i,” I propose a love ethic as a means through which the American social order can be changed. I take the term love ethic from Cornel West and bell hooks. A love ethic is a means through which individual bodies hurt by racism can be recognized and revalorized. Through the course of his three studio albums Lamar offers a narrative remediation of America’s discriminatory social order.   • 2019 U.S. Music Consumption Year End Report
    The BuzzAngle Music 2019 Year-End Report Happy New Year and welcome to the BuzzAngle Music 2019 report on U.S. music consumption! This year’s report is once again packed with data and insights covering all forms of consumption for 2019 as well as for the end of another decade. Buzz Lightyear was famous for saying “to infinity and beyond.” BuzzAngle can now say “to a Trillion and beyond” as for the first time on-demand streams broke the 1 Trillion mark in 2019 with 1,010,000,000 on-demand streams. For the third year in a row, total consumption growth was up double-digits. The 13.5% growth in 2019 in total consumption was fueled by the continued growth of on-demand streams. In 2018, we reported a 16.2% growth in total consumption and an increase of 12.8% in 2017 over 2016. As a result of consumers continuing to move more towards streaming music, on- demand stream consumption now represents 85% of all music consumption in the United States; a 7.6-point jump over 2018 (77%). On-demand audio stream consumption in 2019 set a record high with 705 billion streams, up 32% over 2018’s 534.6 billion audio streams. While album sales and song sales continued to decline, 23% and 26% respectively, vinyl album sales in 2019 experienced another double-digit growth year; up 10.5% over 2018.
