The Trash Can Banging Scandal Heard ‘Round the World Question To what extent, and in what ways, was the Houston Astros cheating scandal in the 2017 season effective in improving team performance? Introduction For the majority of the 2010’s, the Houston Astros were a very middle of the pack team. From 2010-2014, the team did not finish higher than 4th in their division. For most of their history, the Houston Astros participated in the National League Central Division, up until the 2013 season. Since the 2013 season, the Astros have competed in the American League West Division, where they have seen much more success. In 2011, the Astros, one of the worst teams in baseball with a record of 56-106, were sold to Jim Crane where he moved on from ex-GM Ed Wade, and hired Jeff Luhnow two days after the sale. While Ed Wade made some good decisions: debuting Jose Altuve in the 2011 season and drafting George Springer in the 2011 draft, his overall performance was not satisfactory for the new owner. The new GM, Jeff Luhnow, made some notable decisions as well, drafting Carlos Correa in the 2012 draft (debuting him in 2015) and drafting Alex Bregman in the 2015 draft (debuting him in the 2017 season). After another few unsuccessful seasons with records of 55-107, 51-111, and 70-92 in the 2012-2014 seasons, Jeff Luhnow decided to fire the current manager of the team, whom he had a Venkataraman and Bozzella 2 falling out with towards the end of the 2014 season.

Fans of any sport are interested in predicting the outcomes of sporting events. Whether it is prediction based off of experience, a gut feeling, instinct, simulation based off of video games, or simple statistical measures, many fans develop their own approach to predicting the results of games. In many situations, these methods are not reliable and lack a fundamental basis. Even the experts are unsuccessful in most situations. In this paper we present a sports data mining approach to uncover hidden knowledge within the game of baseball. The goal is to develop a model using data mining methods that will predict American League champions, National League champions, and World Series winners at a higher success rate compared to traditional models. Our approach will analyze historical regular season data of playoff contenders by applying kernel machine learning schemes in an effort to uncover potentially useful information that helps predict future champions. Introduction The game of baseball is becoming more reliant on analytical and statistic based approaches to assemble competitive baseball teams. The most well-known application of statistics to baseball is captured in Michael Lewis’s book "Moneyball". Applying a simple statistical approach, Moneyball demonstrated that on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG) are better indicators of offensive success than other standard statistics such as batting average, homeruns, and runs batted in (Lewis 2003).

The time has sped by to quickly as I clearly remember playing on the 1st Avery Point Championship Team in 1973, winning the Connecticut Small College Conference Championship under Coach George Greer. Defeating Stamford UCONN to clinch the championship with teammates like Pat Kelly, Jeff Kirsch, Herb Gardner, Jerry Stergio, Jay Macko and Mike Wilkinson to name a few. Playing a modest 10 game schedule that fall of 1973 started a streak of 15 consecutive CSCC Championships. When George Greer left to coach Davidson College in 1982, I left UCONN as their baseball graduate assistant to replace Coach Greer as the Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach and ultimately joining the NJCAA in 1985. This has led to 14 NJCAA New England Championships, 7 East District Championships and 7 World Series appearances. There has been 37 Professional Baseball signee’s, 3 major Leaguers -John McDonald, Rajai Davis and Pete Walker-, 180 players playing at 4 year programs including 56 to UCONN and 18 NJCAA All-Americans.

    COMMISSIONER’S WELCOME Dixie Boys Baseball Inc. has grown from a humble beginning in 1957 to twenty-five thousand plus participants This publication is intended to provide “hits and highlights” from the 2015 season, as well as offer useful information for the 2016 season. Dixie Boys Baseball was primarily developed J. SANDY JONES as a program for boys (13-14). It was recognized Commissioner/CEO that youth graduating from other baseball pro- grams needed to be able to continue to partici- pate in supervised programs and especially have the opportunity to compete with boys of their own age and skill level. To enhance the experience a medium size diamond was established for this age group and with only minor modifications this program still exist today. The program was expanded to accommodate players ages 13-19. The Boys division is now comprised of 13-14 year old players with tournament play for Junior Boys (age 13) and Dixie Boys (ages 13-14). The Majors division includes: players ages 15-19 with an intermediate division for 15-16-17 year olds named Pre-Majors. A 15U division was established in 2013 and will include a World Series in 2016. Our goal is to increase opportunities for all participants. A National Board of Directors meets biennially and provides con- stitutional governance. Dedicated volunteer service has been provided since the inception of the program. The organization’s worthy mission is accomplished by a hard-working volunteer Board that shares a mutual goal. The 2016 season will again embrace the rich history of the organization.

Mitten** INTRODUCTION This article analyzes leading baseball-related judicial decisions, arbitration awards, and federal legislation regarding the Major League Baseball (MLB) commissioner’s “best interests” power, baseball’s antitrust exemption, and labor relations with MLB players as well as the scope of league, club, and players’ intellectual property rights. As the first law review article authored or co-authored by a current or former commissioner of a North American major professional sports league, it provides a unique insider perspective regarding baseball jurisprudence and its effects on the historical development and business affairs of MLB and its member clubs as well as their relationships with baseball players and their union, fans, and others. The New York Yankees, Philadelphia/Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals have won many. The Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and San Francisco Giants endured decades-long dry spells before they finally won the orldW Series. Even expansion teams like the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, and Florida Marlins have won multiple championships. Other expansion teams like the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers have been to the Fall Classic multiple times, although they did not win. Then we have the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have not been to a World Series since 1945, and have not won one since 1908.

WHEREAS, it was with immense pride that the members of this General Assembly learned that Mr. Ben Zobrist, a resident of Tennessee, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 World Series; and WHEREAS, proving himself to be the right man at the right time, Ben Zobrist answered the prayers of millions of Chicago Cubs fans around the world as he stood in the batter's box in Game 7 of the World Series, with the score tied in the 10th inning, and drove in the go-ahead run that would bring a World Series championship to the Windy City after 108 years; and WHEREAS, a highly talented player who hit for a .357 batting average in the World Series, Mr. Zobrist hoisted the championship trophy for the second consecutive year, having won the 2015 World Series as a member of the Kansas City Royals; and WHEREAS, born and raised in Eureka, lllinois, Ben Zobrist started playing baseball at the age of eight; he played college baseball at Olivet Nazarene University and Dallas Baptist University; and WHEREAS, drafted by the Houston Astros as a shortstop in the sixth round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft, Mr. Zobrist was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 12,2006, and made his major league debut with Tampa Bay on August 1, 2006, against the Detroit Tigers; and WHEREAS, he played in his first World Series as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008, and became the team's starting second baseman the next season, earning a trip to his first All-Star Game and selection by the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Baseball Writers'Association of America as the Rays' MVP; and WHEREAS, signing a new contract with Tampa Bay in 2010, Mr.
