T. Nguyen1 and Tapan Sarker2* Abstract This paper aims to analyze and discuss the evolution towards sustainable coffee supply chain and its management in Vietnam. Coffee is a major agricultural export commodity of Vietnam with the export value accounts for 3% of national GDP in 2014 and provides a livelihood for approximately 2.6 million people. However, the sector is facing enormous challenges as the current farming methods and processing infrastructure have been unsustainable resulting in many catastrophic impacts on the environment such as deforestation and soil degradation that have the potential to lead to a decrease in the quality of coffee beans. Using a case study in Buon Me Thuot City, Daklak, Vietnam, the paper analyses the key factors influencing the sustainable coffee supply chain management in Vietnam. Our analysis confirms that although productivity is high, and farmers have positive experiences in this sector, sustainability issues are emerging. For instance, the farmers have experienced soil erosion and a lack of water and as such are now more willing to incorporate sustainability initiatives in their production and processing. A 2000 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of Thailand was constructed as a data set, and then a 20 production-sector Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model was developed for the Thai economy. The CGE model is employed to simulate the impact of capital-intensive farming on the Thai economy under two different scenarios: technological change and free trade. Four simulations were conducted. Simulation 1 increased the share parameter of capital in the agricultural sector by 5%. Simulation 2 shows a 5% increase in agricultural capital stock. A removal in import tariffs for agricultural machinery sector forms the basis for Simulation 3.

Intensive agriculture is currently unsustainable so a different path is needed. Sustainable intensification is heralded as the saviour of agriculture but what does it mean in practice? This paper sets out a model that combines the lessons of history with the benefits of modern biotechnology, to redesign sustainability in intensive agriculture. At first glance, the terms “sustainable” and “intensification” appear to be incompatible: indeed as the FAO has noted1, whilst agriculture based on the intensive use of inputs has increased global food production over the last half- century, it has in the process, depleted the natural resources of many agro-ecosystems, jeopardising future productivity. The new paradigm of sustainable intensification of agriculture1,2 attempts to balance these competing imperatives, envisaging a system in which yields are increased from the same area of land while conserving resources and reducing negative impacts on the environment.
