For more about the Festival: http://romaeuropa.net/ In this fifth edition of the DIGITAL LIFE dedicated to music and to custom-made musical instruments, Kingsley will be showing one of his pivotal works Métier à tisser musical (Musical Loom), an interactive sound installation and a production of Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains. The work transformed a 250 year-old antique French loom into a sound-image instrument. It was inspired by the loom in northern France where the ancient machine has played a significant role in the region’s boom and prosperity. Wednesday, October 22 – Sunday, November 2, 2014 Asia Society will host ACAW 2014’s signature program FIELD MEETING: CRITICAL OF THE FUTURE, October 26th & 27th; keynote presentation by Tom Finkelpearl; commissioned performances from Haig Aivazian, Polit-Sheer-Form Office, Bavand Behpoor, and more; 35 art professionals to present latest projects and initiatives; highlighting individual practices, history and institution building in Asia, and subculture cross-pollination. Organized by ACAW director Leeza Ahmady and associate curator Xin Wang CURATORIAL STATEMENT AND LINE-UP INTRODUCTION Inspired by and born of the intense field work carried out by all practitioners of art, FIELD MEETING foregrounds the immediacy of these dynamic exchanges by bringing together over 40 artists, curators, scholars, and institutional leaders whose works variously relate to and problematize the cultural, political, and geographical parameters of contemporary Asia. As a curated platform, FIELD MEETING capitalizes on this fall’s citywide museum and gallery exhibitions shedding light on various aspects of contemporary Asian art through highlighting individual and regional practices; simultaneously, the intensive two-day forum facilitates another Sun Xun, Magician Party and Dead Crow, 2013, installation (wall painting, kind of exchange beyond established ink & color on paper, paper sculpture, and other materials). Courtesy of the artists & Asia Contemporary Art Week 2018 Thinking Collections: Telling Tales: A Survey Exhibition of Kyzyl Tractor Art Collective, a signature program of Asia Contemporary Art Week 2018 at Mana Contemporary, is part of Focus Kazakhstan, a landmark initiative celebrating the art of Kazakhstan through four thematic presentations in London, Berlin, Suwon and Jersey City. This unprecedented survey reunites Kyzyl Tractor collective, known for their feverish experimentations in the mid 1990’s and early 2000’s, after almost two decades of working both separately and occasionally together. The exhibition highlights each artist’s individual practice and contextualizes their work from all periods interacting with one another. The group is acclaimed for reorienting nomadic, Sufi, and Shamanistic philosophies as a new artistic language in juxtaposition with the region’s seismic socio- economic and political shifts. The show comprises two monumental sculptural works - one newly conceived and a reproduction of an older destroyed work - alongside numerous archival photos of the collective’s earlier performances, sculptures, paintings, drawings, found objects and other paraphernalia. On October 14, the opening day of the exhibition, the collective will reenact one of their legendary performance rituals entitled Purification. -

For objects that have lost their reasons to exist in the world, instead of transforming them into new by-products, can we inject new meanings into these objects as they are? Can we help them find new home? Kentaro Hiroki was born in 1976 in Osaka, Japan. He is currently an art lecturer at the School of Architecture and Design KMUTT, Bangkok, Thailand. Hiroki graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Osaka Art University and subsequently took a Foundation Course from Central Saints Martin School of Design, London Institute. He obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from Goldsmiths 9 Justice Drive College, University of London in 2001 and MA in Fine Art from Malmö Art Academy, Sweden in 2003. Admiralty He has had 4 solo exhibitions and participated in 13 group shows in UK, Norway, Sweden, Thailand, Hong Kong Korea, and Hong Kong. Kingsley Ng is an interdisplinary artist that sets his focus on conceptual, site-specific and community-oriented projects. To him, art is the byproduct that shows human’s existence in its time and space; it should be socially relevant, employing contemporary language and media to render the issues of our time. -

SSeelleecctteedd BBiiooss//SSttaatteemmeennttss//IImmaaggeess Author’s note: With this essay, my intention is to publicize the artists of Central Asia. While I have written the contents of many of the following biographies, some text has been borrowed directly from various publications, press releases, websites, and other sources. In addition, some are texts that the artists have submitted to me within the past three years. Most bios do not list an exhibition history. Instead, they provide a general sense of the artists’ thematic direction, preferred media, level of achievement, and public exposure. Lida Abdul (Afghanistan) Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1973, Abdul lived in Germany and India as a refugee before going to the U.S. Her work fuses the formalist traditions she was learned in the U.S. with the numerous aesthetic traditions—Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, pagan, and nomadic—that collectively influenced Afghan art and culture. She has produced work in various media, including video, film, photography, installation, and performance. Her most recent work has been featured at the Venice Biennale 2005; Kunsthalle Vienna; Museum of Modern Art Arnhem, Netherlands and Miami Cantral; CAC Centre d'Art Contemporain de Brétigny; and Frac Lorraine Metz, France. She has also exhibited in festivals in Mexico, Spain, Germany, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. She was a featured artist at the Central Asian Biennial 2004. Recently, she was in Kabul, Afghanistan, working on projects exploring the relationship between architecture and identity in post-war Afghanistan. Lida Abdul, Untitled. Video, 2004. Before the Rain addresses the tensions that precipitated the recent political and civil urgency in Hong Kong and the city’s pressing need to reimagine its future. The exhibiting works are imbued with a need to safeguard the city and feature a range of artwork complemented by works from the Umbrella Revolution Visual Archive. The presence of heavy humidity signals the inevitability of a downpour that will interrupt and intercept patterns of normality. For Hong Kong, a city defined by humidity, “The Umbrella Movement” that began on September 28 2014 was the result of a long and steady buildup of uncertainty, anxiety and the long held need to articulate a cohesive identity for the city. Before the Rain’s artists frame the conversation from a multiplicity of perspectives presenting the complexity and concerns of a city facing a future planned by others. They approach the city with an intent to protect it; their works may appear as warnings but they are underpinned by a need to safeguard. -

Research Assessment Exercise 2020 Impact Case Study University: Hong Kong Baptist University Unit of Assessment: 38 visual arts, design, creative media, other creative arts and creative writing Title of Case Study: Engaging New Audiences for Art beyond the Gallery and Museum Sector in Hong Kong and East Asia Summary of the impact New forms of event-based and participatory visual art research, conducted at the Centre for Research and Development in the Visual Arts (CRDVA), have led to changes in organisational behaviour and attitudes towards commissioning public art in alternative venues in 12 government departments, museums and art festivals across East Asia. Publicly cited artistic research of three investigators (Ng, Leung, Wan) has increased public engagement and developed new audiences and understanding in contemporary art in four countries (Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan) reaching 350,000 participants. Underpinning research Since 2014, a research team led by Professor Leung and Assistant Professors Ng and Wan has conducted research on alternative spaces for public art. Working in collaboration with local and international stakeholders, such as the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMA), the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the Art Promotion Office (APO), Art Basel, the Association of Visual Arts Taiwan, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (Japan) and the Gwangju Biennale (Korea), the team has conducted historical research and developed new outputs utilising transport networks, historical sites, government facilities, shops and festivals to increase and diversify the audiences of and enable greater access to the visual arts. The research has been supported by HKD 2.4 million from government departments and Strategic Development Funds over 6 years. -
