The compiler of the collection, Stephen Satterly L’Hommedieu (1806-1875) was a proprietor of the Cincinnati Gazette newspaper, and after retiring from that industry was elected the second president of the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad in 1848. L’Hommedieu also was a delegate from the First District of Ohio to the first Whig party convention in 1848.
