  • Report on the Second York Schools Science Quiz on Thursday 12 March, Thirteen Schools from in and Around York Came Together
Report on the Second York Schools Science Quiz On Thursday 12 March, thirteen schools from in and around York came together for the second York Schools Science Quiz. Twenty two school teams competed along with four teacher teams (put together from the teachers who brought the pupils along from the various schools) for the trophies and prizes. Each team consisted of two Lower Sixth and two Fifth Form pupils or four Fifth Form pupils for those schools without Sixth Forms. The schools represented were Manor CE School, Canon Lee School, The Joseph Rowntree School, Huntington School, Archbishop Holgate’s School, Fulford School, All Saints School, Millthorpe School, St Peter’s School, Bootham School, The Mount School, Selby High School and Scarborough College. The event took place as part of the York ISSP and also the York Schools Ogden Partnership, with a large thank you to the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics for some of the prizes, the Rotary Club of York Vikings for the water bottles and the Ogden Trust for the 8 GB memory sticks and Amazon Voucher prizes. The quiz was put together and presented by Sarah McKie, who is the Head of Biology at St Peter’s School, and consisted of Biology, Chemistry and Physics rounds alongside an Observation Challenge and a Hitting the Headlines round amongst others. At the end of the quiz the teams waited with bated breath for the results to be announced. It turned out that three teams were tied for second place, so a tie breaker was needed to separate them.

1 July2018 InsideInside thisthis issueissue Sixth Form News: Page 4 Design Technology News: Page 8 “Bumper” Sports Round-up: Page 10 Music—’Battle of the Bands’: Page 18 “The Head-line” Once again this Academic Year has evaporated away but as a school we have “covered a lot of ground” to ena- ble our students to make the very best of their opportunities. This could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of our staff, as they always give above and beyond what I could reasonably expect of them, I am very grateful to them all. As a school I feel we have embraced many changes, including the new exam specifications and the grading systems as well as fully embedding Positive Discipline (PD) into our school culture. PD has enabled students to be recognised and rewarded for their efforts whilst rightly challenging any low level disruption that may arise. A special mention must go to Miss Smith and Mr Dexter for the implementation and delivery of this system. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Suret and Mrs Kirman ably assisted by Mr Hardgrave in ensur- ing that all our external examinations have passed off without incident. This is a massive undertaking. All the students who have sat either GCSE or A level exams have ensured that they have given themselves the best possible chance and we hope that the results they achieve reflects the time and energy they have devoted to their studies. I am immensely proud of the range of extra-curricular trips we have offered this year.

  • Spring Newsletter 2018
Dear Parent/Carer Nidderdale High School has been at its resilient best this term. We have awarded 1731 positive points between 341 students for resilience on classcharts since January. Many of these have been awarded as a result of the launch of 'Resilience 10'. In many classes now students are asked to complete 10 minutes silent, unaided work after tasks have been explained and demonstrated. Students have been surprising themselves with just how much they can work out for themselves when they rise to this challenge. Years 9, 10 and 11 have all shown resilience in their important exams this term. We have all had to demonstrate resilience when faced with the recent weather related challenges and two separate instances of problems with the school heating system! We are hoping that the last of the cold weather will come in the holidays and we can look forward to brighter, warmer days in the new term. It has again been a busy term with two trips abroad, two packed NICE days, sporting fixtures, competitions and the launch of our primary school workshops delivered by our own talented Key Stage 3 students. You can read about many of these events and activities in this newsletter. Earlier in the term we were considering, as part of Internet Safety Day, the impact that unkind comments online can have on the mental health, 'digital health' and resilience of young people. It has been really inspiring to end the term with a focus on 'random acts of gratitude' with staff and students sharing with their peers and colleagues a thank you or a 'brilliant because'.
